Diversity Summer Internship Program for Undergraduates Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP) at the Bloomberg School of Public Health is a 10-week summer program that provides undergraduates with a graduate-level, independent research project in the biomedical or public health field.

Students work under the direct mentoring of accomplished Johns Hopkins researchers, gaining valuable experience in a collaborative, challenging and fun environment.

The Diversity Summer Internship Program welcomes applicants from all over the United States, including underrepresented and economically disadvantaged areas. Starting November 1, 2012, visit the Diversity Summer Internship Program’s online application page to begin filling out an application.

This is a great PAID research opportunity The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will accept more than 100 undergraduates in STEM fields for an 11-week paid research fellowship in summer 2013. All UMBC students must apply through the university. If you would like to apply, notify Janet McGlynn (mcglynn@umbc.edu) NOW so that you receive important information. The first NIST-related workshop will be in November.

NIST is a very prominent national research facility located in Gaithersburg. They provide (very nice) housing for the 11-week program. The program includes mentored, hands-on research, professional development, and the opportunity to work with 100 or more students like you from all over the country. Students in any science, programming, engineering, or math field would be appropriate for this program. Requires citizenship/permanent resident status and a GPA of at least 3.0

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: This is my Senior Year

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: In addition to being a varsity lacrosse player, I serve as the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) secratary, and I am a student representative on the Athletic Policy Committee.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: I serve as a liason between student athletes, students, and faculty.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I enjoy being able to actively participate in creating policies that are fair and will benefit my fellow student athletes through the Athletic Policy Committee. My role here is unique as I am the only student on the panel. Through my roles in SAAC, I enjoy organizing events that help better the community and relationships between athletes and non-athletes. I feel there is a gap in social interaction between these two groups on campus and if changed will benefit the social life at UMBC.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: Being at UMBC/college has helped me become more well rounded. Initially, I came to UMBC more athletic minded. However, after being in such an innovative environment I saw the importance in academics and being involved in organizations. As a result I challenged myself in the classroom and have enjoyed being on the Dean's List several times. Also, becoming actively involved in organizations on campus I have learned more about working with others and the effect I can have on my community. This is a mindset I will continue into my post college years.

A: Hard Work.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: On the ground floor of the Administration Building there is The Coffee Shop. In my opinion this is the best place on campus to get breakfast or lunch. I have eaten there at least once per day the last four years. Not only is the food great, but they really have a great staff of employees, who I know on a first name basis. There is a deli back home where I have the same experience. Eating there everyday gives me a sense of community, the same way I feel in my hometown. I recommend roast beef on 12-grain toast.

On-Campus Interviews offer students a chance to conveniently interview for professional positions on campus.  Employers travel to our campus for the specific purpose of interviewing preselected students for currently open positions.  This is a great opportunity to interview with employers specifically interested in UMBC students and offers the advantage of a smaller applicant pool.  Interviews take place during the fall and spring. The logistics (viewing positions, applying, signing up for interview time slots, etc.) are all handled via UMBCworks.

Renovation Schedule

  • Phase 1: Manokin, Sideling, Breton, Deep Creek, & Elk
    • Anticipated Completion Date: End of August, 2012
  • Phase 2: Pocomoke, Casselman, Patuxent, Wicomico, & Antietam
    • Anticipated Completion Date: End of December, 2012
  • Phase 3: Sassafras, Chincoteague, Tuckahoe, Monocacy, Gunpowder, & Nanticoke
    • Construction Begins: End of December, 2012

 

So What Exactly Is Being Renovated?

Here's a list of just a few of the new features that the renovated apartments will have:

  • Building stairwells renovated to meet upgraded fire standards
  • Apartment front doors now use keycard locks (bedroom doors still use physical keys)
  • Apartments now equipped with ovens and table-top ranges
  • New furniture in apartments
  • New appliances in apartments
  • New light fixtures in bathrooms
  • New carpets

The application for UMBC's STRiVE 2013 leadership retreat (January 14-18, 2013) is now available.  If you're UMBC undergraduate student is interested in learning about building new skills, making new friends and becoming an agent of change on campus and in the UMBC community, they should consider applying.  STRiVE is . . . well, maybe you'll get a sense of it by reading a few of the Facebook status updates and tweets posted by participants in STRiVE 2012 the day they got back from the retreat last January:
  • Just got back from STRiVE, twas epic.
  • STRiVE is fun, energizing and, for many, life-changing.  I know it has been for me.
  • Going to STRiVE was literally the best decision I've made since being in college. I met so many amazing people. :)

STRiVE 2013 will take place at the Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, Maryland (participants will travel by bus from the UMBC campus). A team of 12 UMBC staff members and student leaders will serve as facilitators for the retreat.
