UMBC’s Annual Security & Fire Safety Report

Members of the UMBC Community,

Each fall, the UMBC Police Department publishes the Annual Security & Fire Safety Report. I encourage you to take a few moments to review this important material.

In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998 (“Clery Act”), this message constitutes notification for our campus community of the availability of the 2020 Annual Security & Fire Safety Report.

This report contains crime and fire statistics that were reported to the UMBC Police Department and/or Campus Security Authorities for the most recent three years. Please note that this report tracks incidents based on location—specifically those reported to have occurred on campus, in non-campus university buildings, in property owned or controlled by the University, or on public property immediately adjacent to the campus.

The report also includes information regarding UMBC policies and practices related to campus security and crime reporting. We encourage all members of our community to report security incidents; the report describes how and to whom crimes should be reported.

In addition, the report contains information on campus resources and educational programs, personal safety tips, emergency response and evacuation, and policies regarding student discipline.

The UMBC Police Department appreciates that all members of our community—students, faculty, and staff—are essential partners in making UMBC a safe place to learn, live, and work. The UMBC’s community active interest in campus safety is one of our best crime prevention assets.

Copies of the report are also available at the UMBC Police Station, or by emailing police@umbc.edu.

Intern of the Week: Sahar Mahate for Biology and HAPP!

<Tagline>Check out Sahar's internship with Johns Hopkins Medicine!</Tagline>

Name:Sahar Mahate

Internship, Co-op or Research Site:Johns Hopkins Medicine

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

As lab research shifted online, my responsibilities changed a lot. When I was working at this lab in person, I injected tumors into the tibias of live animal models, operated technology for X-rays and ultrasounds on animal models, completed stress experiments and necropsies on mice and rats, and performed western blots, cell cultures, and DNA methylation analyses. With virtual work, there was a lot more focus on literature review and data analysis. We would have meetings where research was discussed, and I would be assigned specific topics to present on. We also began using a new proteomic analysis program to identify and compare pathways of primary osteosarcoma tumors and secondary pulmonary tumors to determine how commonly upregulated pathways associated with pulmonary metastasis in osteosarcoma can be inhibited. My responsibility was to work with the other undergraduate researchers in the lab to figure out how the program worked, use it to analyze the data, and present relevant findings at lab meetings.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

This is a research lab I've been working at since high school, and have continued to work with throughout college.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

This summer, I really enjoyed being able to take charge and work on an independent project with the proteomics analysis program to contribute to the lab research. It gave me the opportunity to collaborate with other undergraduate colleagues to teach ourselves something new and to share the knowledge with the researchers in the lab, as the program was new to all of them as well.

Do you have an interest in Becoming a Nonprofit Leader or Social Entrepreneur?
Are you ready to intern with a Nonprofit or Social Venture this Spring?

If yes, apply to the Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation and Social Change.

The Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation
and Social Change prepares UMBC students for the rigors and rewards of
entrepreneurship and social innovation. This program places
highly-motivated students from diverse backgrounds in mentored
internships (remote and/or onsite) to better prepare them to launch
nonprofit or social ventures. Students get training and experience to
empower them to become the next generation of social
entrepreneurs–working largely in the not-for-profit world, developing
and delivering innovative solutions to some of our region’s most urgent
    social problems.

Internships last one semester (15 weeks) and students will work, on
average, 8 to 10 hours per week. Students receive a stipend of $1,500
toward their compensation. In addition to the internship, students
engage in projects and activities that further expose them to the social
     entrepreneurial mindset.

    Why Participate?
- Earn a competitive stipend of $1,500
- Gain valuable experience in your career field by interning 120 hours over the course of the semester (8-10 hours per week)
- Be exposed to the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to successfully launch and manage a nonprofit/social venture
- Develop a network of contacts in the nonprofit community for future references and opportunities
- Apply classroom knowledge in a realistic work environment and apply lessons learned in the workplace to academic coursework

TO APPLY:
Interested students are asked to submit a Resume and a Cover Letter answering the following questions:
Discuss your interest in both entrepreneurship and this intern program.
What has been your entrepreneurial involvement thus far such as
coursework, seminars, etc. (if applicable)? What type of nonprofit would
you like to intern for and why?

Your resume and cover letter can be submitted via UMBCworks, position 9320107
