However, eligibility is only the start of the graduation application process. Below are four simple steps you can take now to ensure that you’ll soon be celebrating the completion of your UMBC degree.

Step 1: Review your Graduation Card

Once you’ve earned 90 academic credits, you will have access to a Graduation Card on your myUMBC Profile page. The Graduation Card is a personalized, step-by-step guide that will ensure a smooth process forward until you cross the finish line with your UMBC degree.

Please be reminded that UMBC confers baccalaureate degrees to undergraduate students who successfully complete a course of study that meets the minimum university requirements outlined in the Undergraduate Baccalaureate Degree Completion Policy. Only those students who have every single requirement needed for degree completion (i.e., currently enrolled in all remaining courses and/or pending transfer credit to be sent to UMBC), will be permitted to apply for graduation and participate in the Commencement ceremony.

Step 2: Wrap up any outstanding details ASAP!

Welcome to the Spring 2021 Semester

    Dear UMBC Community,

We are delighted to welcome you to the beginning of our spring semester. The start of a new semester provides each of us an opportunity to reflect on our shared goals and values and to reaffirm UMBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence and to each other. It also gives us the chance to recognize how each of our unique stories, perspectives, and experiences enrich our UMBC community.

Finding Community during the Pandemic
We understand that many in our community and across our nation and the world continue to experience challenges and loss as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As we begin our second full semester in a mostly virtual environment, we want to recognize the importance of our community’s empathy, flexibility, compassion, and support for one another.

The myriad ways in which people seek, find, and sustain community at UMBC have necessarily evolved during the past year. We have learned that community is more than a place; it is a feeling of belonging, a caring ear during tough times, and a sense of shared celebration during good times. We are proud of the efforts of so many to plan events that transcend location and promote UMBC’s sense of community and togetherness even while we are apart.

We encourage students to participate in the ongoing Winter Welcome Week activities, which are scheduled through January 30, 2021, as well as Involvement Fest from February 1 ﹘ 4, 2021. We hope students will consider joining campus organizations and participating in the virtual events planned for the semester. These are a great way for students to get to know and learn from each other, hear about different cultures and perspectives, and get involved in issues or activities of interest to them.

Moving Forward Together
As we reflect on the social and political divisions that have been so apparent in recent months, we encourage all members of our community to remain committed to understanding different perspectives as we seek to move forward together. We are fortunate to have faculty, staff, and students involved in civic engagement and community-building both on and off campus. UMBC is a community where we inspire one another to be our authentic selves, reach our full potential, and make an impact.

We invite all members of our diverse UMBC family to connect with each other in the spirit of mutual respect, dignity, and understanding. We encourage you to join The Empowered University: Balancing Inclusion and Free Speech, tomorrow, Wednesday, January 27, at 4 p.m. Please register here for this community discussion about the challenges of balancing our shared commitments to free speech and equity and inclusion. The Center for Democracy and Civic Life and Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (i3b) are also excellent resources for students who wish to be more engaged in this work.

As spring classes begin, we also want to remind undergraduate students that the Academic Success Center provides a range of resources to support them as they progress toward degree completion and is available to answer questions virtually.

Thank you for all you do to strengthen our community, and best wishes for the new semester.

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous

Mitigating Harassment in Online Spaces Workshop (REPOST)

<Tagline>Women's Center: A Workshop for UMBC Faculty and Staff</Tagline>

Presenters: Virginia Byrne, Ph.D. & Juana Hollingsworth MSW, Morgan State University's School of Education and Urban Studies.

In our research we have found that most undergraduate students experience online harassment as both the victim and the bystander (i.e., witnessing their peer being harassed online). Few of these students, however, go to their professors or advisors when they need help. In this hands-on workshop we address why students don't turn to their faculty and student affairs pros when they are experiencing online victimization and what you can do to position yourself as a trusted helper.

We'll talk about the climate and policies that fuel a culture of online harassment, patterns in first-hand and secondary victimization, and why these victims and bystanders don't seek your help.

Then we will outline policies and practices you can adopt to educate students on online harassment, prevent it from happening in your spaces, and prepare a plan for when a student comes to you for support.

In short, students need us to be aware of and prepared to respond to online harassment. Join us for this workshop by registering at this link https://forms.gle/JD2Zo4TMNUn39n9AA by Wednesday, February 17th. Only faculty and staff who register at this link will receive access to the event link.

Please note: UMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all students, staff, faculty, and visitors. If you have difficulties accessing any of the materials on our site or any of our events or discussions, please contact us so that we can provide an alternative format and/or remedy any accessibility challenges.

Spring Testing Plan

Key Points

Faculty, staff, and commuting students who wish to test on campus January 26 - 29 can now schedule their test.

We are working to categorize everyone who is approved to be on campus so that you can receive specific instructions about your testing schedule for the rest of the semester.

Continue to check your COVID Compliance Card in your myUMBC profile.

Dear UMBC Community,

Updates for Spring Entry Testing

If you are expected to be on campus before March 1, you need to complete testing and submit a negative test result at the start of the semester. Faculty and staff who participated in testing from January 2 ﹘ 9 are not required to participate in this pre-semester testing period. Residential students will receive testing instructions separately from Residential Life.

Faculty, staff, and commuting students can now schedule an on-campus testing appointment. Please make every effort to sign up as soon as possible. You may also test off campus; options are detailed here.

All community members who are currently approved to be on campus will receive an email from MarylandGenomics (MG Scanner Mobile) with instructions on downloading an app and a QR Code unique to you. You will need this information to test throughout the semester.

Ongoing Testing Throughout the Semester

Based on your campus access status, we will be assigning everyone approved to be on campus to different categories and different testing schedules. You will see your designation in your COVID Compliance Card in your myUMBC profile by Friday, January 29.

Groups and testing schedules include:

Group A ﹘ Residential studentsliving on campus will test twice a week throughout the entire semester except during spring break.

Group B ﹘ Pre-approved faculty, staff, and commuting students who come to campus two or more times a week and have shared work spaces and/or close interactions. This group will test twice a week throughout the entire semester.

Group C ﹘ Student athletes and coaches follow a unique testing schedule approved by the NCAA and the university. It includes regular testing at least twice a week.

Group D ﹘ Pre-approved faculty, staff, and commuting students who come to campus on average once a week OR come to campus less regularly but have a high risk situation that includes shared work space or interaction with others on campus. This group will be tested less frequently with the goal of accessing rapid antigen testing when feasible. More details will be provided directly to this group as the situation evolves.

Group E ﹘ Faculty, staff, commuting students, or other visitorswho come to campus for a one-time visit OR who visit once a week or less and do not have shared work space or interaction with others. If not already approved to be on campus, anyone in this category must first obtain approval from their supervisor and the Chief of Police to visit campus. We will share additional information on this process and testing guidance soon. In general, testing will not be required unless there will be exposure to others for more than 15 minutes.

After your COVID Compliance Card is updated with a group designation, if you believe that you have been assigned to an incorrect group, please speak with your supervisor. You can also contact covid19@umbc.edu.

Additional Compliance Requirements

Please remember that all community members who are approved to be on campus must complete the online symptom tracker every day, seven-days-a-week, starting 14 days before arrival.
