For students registered with SDS, now is the best time to check on the following items.

Make sure your instructors know about your testing accommodations:

Finals are just 6 weeks away: May 14-20th.

Last day of classes is Wednesday, 5/12/21. All coursework is generally due by the last day of classes.

Email your instructors to remind them EVERY time you will be using testing accommodations (if you have test accommodations). Notify instructors at least 2 weekdays prior to an exam. For example, send an email and be specific, reminding them you "will be using your 50% extended time for Friday's test".

All timed exams are arranged through instructors in Spring 2021. Do not schedule tests with SDS at this time.

If you have not submitted a Semester Request for Spring 2021, your instructors do not know you can use accommodations and no letter was sent from SDS. You may still submit Spring 2021 Semester Requests now, if you need to use approved accommodations for the remainder of the semester.

Contact SDS if you have any questions or concerns about testing or your accommodations.

If needed, SDS staff can provide supplemental disability-related advising based on your circumstances.

Requests for an Incomplete grade must be discussed and approved by your faculty member. You must have successfully completed (passing grades) 75% of the course to be eligible.

See https://registrar.umbc.edu/services/registration/information-about-withdrawal-and-absence/

Plan ahead and contact SDS re challenges and due dates:

If you have new disability or accommodation-related challenges impacting classes, contact SDS so that we can assist you in identifying support needs and solutions.

SDS has virtual office "drop-in" hours available for asking general questions of an SDS staff person. Hours and Webex link are on our website- https://sds.umbc.edu/

If you are having difficulties with class participation and/or attendance that is related to COVID-19 (unrelated to your disability), please work with your instructor on identifying solutions.
Also, visit https://covid19.umbc.edu/ for up-to-date University information and support resources.

Please plan ahead for upcoming coursework and project due dates. Notify your instructors in advance of due dates if you are having difficulties and seek assistance. Remember to copy SDS so that we are aware of your request

Typical extension length without point deduction may be 1-7 days, when necessary and appropriate.

The 2020 election is officially over and Joe Biden has been inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States, yet over half of the Republican party continue to question the election results. As unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud fueled by Trump and his supporters dominate the headlines, I argue that voter suppression of Black and Latinx voters should instead be foregrounded as a major threat to democracy. This research will examine voter suppression in presidential elections using content analysis of newspaper and scholarly articles. First, I will compare incidents of voter suppression found in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections to evaluate the effects of the 2013 Shelby County v Holder decision which rendered some sections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 unconstitutional. Next, I will evaluate incidents of voter suppression in the 2020 election. Lastly, using scholarly work, law reviews, and policy proposals, I will analyze ways to protect the right to vote. This research bridges the fields of American Studies and Political Science by evaluating the topics of voting and elections through a humanities lens to bring a greater understanding of how voter suppression affects the citizens of our democracy.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month brings people together to create and generate discussion and skill-building on how to prevent sexual violence in our schools, workplaces, and communities. While providing support and care to survivors of sexual violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences.

We are saddened that for another year in a row that the pandemic has impacted our ability to physically come together this April to do this critical work. To honor this special event that centers survivors stories and healing and invites our community to dismantle rape culture, we created an interactive website that will be launched later this month. We invite our community to visit the website and engage in the visual and audio content. Spend time alone or with others sitting with the reflection questions and action items. Share your thoughts on social media using #UMBCtbtn.

UMBC's 2021 Virtual Sexual Assault Awareness Month

<Tagline>We see you. We believe you. You matter.</Tagline>

Spend time alone or with others sitting with the reflection questions and action items. Share your thoughts on social media using #UMBCtbtn.

Fall 2021 Update: Free Hour and Events

Dear UMBC Community,

As we prepare for a primarily in-person campus in the fall, we look forward to creating opportunities for students to safely gather and participate in campus events and activities.

We are working with SGA to plan activities this fall and we understand that the continued presence of COVID-19 will mean that all of our community gatherings will need to prioritize health and safety. For example, gathering in large groups will likely be restricted. With this information, we would like to share a few key updates to help our campus community, including student organizations, begin planning for a successful fall semester:

Free Hour will continue, but will be moved to Fridays between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. in order to help prevent overcrowding in dining spaces.

We intend to provide outdoor programming options for students including movies, bingo, food trucks, yoga, trivia, and more!

Campus Life is working alongside SGA to make sure there are spaces dedicated to student organization programming.

Virtual events will continue to be an important part of making sure all in our community stay safe. Hosts of in-person events should consider how they can offer options for community members to participate remotely. Several new spaces across campus are being outfitted with technology to make this possible.

If you are looking to join one of the 230+ student organizations at UMBC, please check out: https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/studentorgs. For student organizations looking for additional support during this transition, feel free to reach out to SGA or Campus Life at campuslife@umbc.edu.

We look forward to sharing details as we know more. If you have specific questions or concerns, please reach out to us at sga@umbc.edu.
