All Eyes on the Prize

<Tagline>Scholarships, Honors, Awards & Honor Societies</Tagline>

We see you. Your hard work and dedication to your academics does
not go unnoticed. There are a variety of ways we recognize academic achievement
at UMBC. This includes the Dean’s List, honor societies, the Honors College
Medallion, and merit scholarships in your field.  Read below to discover how
your success in the classroom may be celebrated.

Academic Honors based on
    Semester Grades

The academic honor available to the largest
number of UMBC students is completely automatic. Full-time students who achieve
certain semester grade point averages receive a notation on their permanent
    UMBC transcripts as follows:

Semester Academic Honors = 3.50
    and up

Dean’s List Honors = 3.75 and up

President’s List Honors = 4.00

The beauty of this recognition is that you
get a chance at it every fall and spring semester. It is definitely a morale
boost also and resume-worthy when you see one of these notations on your
transcript. It places you among the most successful students at UMBC in a given
    semester.

Honor
    Societies-Multi-disciplinary

Honor societies may be identified by Greek
letters, but they are not fraternities or sororities in the usual sense of
“Greek life” on campus. Based on your academic performance at UMBC, you
may be invited to join one or more of these organizations. You do not apply for
membership. The most active honor societies on campus are:

Phi Beta Kappa: The big Kahuna of American scholarly honor societies, PBK
was founded at the College of William and Mary back in 1776 (a big year for the
American colonies!). To win a Phi Beta Kappa key, a student has to achieve very
high grades in a course of study that includes courses across the liberal arts
well beyond minimum general education requirements for a degree. A
faculty committee here at UMBC evaluates potential selectees for Phi Beta Kappa
honors. UMBC’s faculty and staff who were PBK members from their undergraduate
days had to demonstrate the breadth and rigor of our academic program to establish
a chapter of this prestigious honor society in 1998. This is one
invitation you will definitely want to accept if offered.

Phi Kappa Phi: Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi
honors high-achieving students in all disciplines, at both the undergraduate
and graduate levels. The UMB-UMBC chapter was installed at UMBC in 2010
and is hard at work at creating campus presence. Phi Kappa Phi’s motto is
“Let the love of learning rule humanity.”

Golden Key International Honor Society: Golden Key membership is extended to high-achieving
students in all disciplines. The national and international organizations offer
a large program of scholarships and awards open to members as well as regional
and national conferences. UMBC’s award-winning chapter of Golden Key is well
known for its extensive community service commitments, such as hosting an
annual Halloween party for children at Villa Maria Children’s Center. A
tutoring program at Arbutus Middle School is another project recently
    launched.

Tau Sigma National Honor Society: Founded in 1999 at Auburn University, Tau Sigma recognizes
and supports talented transfer students at four-year universities. This society
does require students who believe they meet the criteria to apply for
membership. Membership is available to transfer students who achieve high-grade
averages during their first full-time semester of enrollment at UMBC. The UMBC
    chapter was created in 2007.

Graduation Honors

Honors are based upon coursework taken
throughout a student’s entire undergraduate academic career at UMBC. To be
eligible for Honors, students must have earned at least 60 graded credits at
UMBC (excluding Pass/Fail and Audit grades) with a GPA as follows:

Summa cum laude (“With highest honor”):
Students graduating with a GPA between 3.95 and 4.0.

Magna cum laude (“With high honor”):
Students graduating with a GPA between 3.75 and 3.9499.

Cum laude (“With honor”): Students
graduating with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.7499.

Visit the Registrar’s website for how graduation honors in
    calculated.

Academic Recognition for Varsity
    Athletes

The National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) and other external organizations sponsor a variety of awards recognizing
the academic achievements of varsity athletes. UMBC athletes and whole
teams regularly receive recognition for maintaining high academic standards
despite demanding athletic schedules. Also, UMBC sponsors a chapter of the National College Athlete Honor Society.

Academic Merit Scholarships

The great bulk of academic merit
scholarships at UMBC are awarded to students at the time they are admitted to
UMBC. However, there are some opportunities for students enrolled at UMBC
to compete for scholarships based primarily on academic achievement, sometimes
in combination with service and need. For example, UMBC sponsors a small
scholarship for returning women students. The UMBC Alumni Association also
sponsors scholarships for continuing students. The Honors College and the
Ancient Studies Department have some study abroad scholarships. The UMBC
Theatre Department provides modest scholarships to majors based on academic
    performance and service. An extensive
listing of such scholarships is available.

These scholarships are as much a way for
UMBC to recognize top students as they are a means of financial support.
Applying for merit scholarships at UMBC is therefore very worthwhile,
even if the amounts involved are modest. These scholarships come and go, so be
    sure to do careful research.

REPOST: PAWTalks: Religious InQueeries

<Tagline>An Open Dialogue About Religious and LGBTQ+ Identities</Tagline>

This Inspirational Talks series invites speakers each semester from all over the country to discuss personal experiences relating to their identity, research and/or global issues that impact diversity, equity and inclusion. PAWTalks provides an interactive, cultural sharing experience by highlighting the richness of the various cultures through speakers from around the country representing diverse backgrounds.

This PAWTalk features its very first panel of speakers that will discuss the intersection of LGBTQ+ identity and religion/spirituality, specifically how each of these identities interact with one another for someone who identifies with both communities and/or implements LGBTQ+ inclusive practices within their religious/spiritual communit(y/ies). Each speaker will share their specific experiences, to various questions including:

How they “arrived” at this moment where both of these identities could co-exist and whether that transition was easy or difficult to navigate?

If and how other identity groups (e.g. age, race, class, gender) have played a role within their LGBTQ+ and/or religious/spiritual experience?

What (if any) LGBTQ+ specific topics come up within their specific religious/spiritual communities?

How might LGBTQ+ individuals who may not have had such a positive experience with religion or religious/spiritual communities be receptive to exploring their spirituality (if that is something they would like to explore)?

What are some ways their religious/spiritual community have done work in regards to their inclusive practices to encourage participation from LGBTQ+ community members?

How to spot toxic behavior that can be dangerous for LGBTQ+ people within a religious/spiritual community?

And many more!

Taking a Moment to Pause and Breathe

<Tagline>Processing What Has Happened So Far in 2021</Tagline>

Over the past several weeks, I’ve been reading See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love by Valerie Kaur. In the book, Kaur explores what brought her to a fight for social justice and the need for radical love, while offering insight into her lived experience as a Sikh American living in the United States. As she shares her story, she likens the darkness of the world to a “tomb” and a “womb.” In this likeness, she argues that if the world is in transition, and this darkness that we continue to experience is in fact the “darkness of the womb,” then the only way to move forward, is to “breathe and push.” We, as a community, are so connected to the pushing - pushing through, pushing up, pushing back… yet, we have not quite figured out how to first breathe.

We know that so many in our community are overflowing with emotions and feelings connected to continuing isolation and hyper vigilance from COVID-19, accompanied by what feels like non-stop death, tragedy, racial injustice, and ongoing distrust of the criminal justice system. In the past, Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) and our associated centers - Pride, Interfaith, and Mosaic, have often rushed to hold processing and healing spaces, with and for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our broader campus community. As a staff team composed 100% by folks of color, we are feeling intricately impacted, and at the current moment, we have found that we simply do not have the emotional capacity to hold such a space in an authentic, productive way. Yesterday, today and for the remainder of this week, instead of pushing through our own pain, we have decided instead to pause and breathe. As we take the time to process our own rage, exhaustion, and sadness, we still want to be sure that you know that we see you and are in this with you. If you, like us, are navigating a range of emotions, we encourage you to spend this week honoring your needs, and creating space for self-care and reflection, while connecting deeply with loved ones as you engage in community care.

We offer you the following as ways to engage:

If you are feeling directly impacted.

Breathe deeply. Taking long quiet breaths helps to ground you in moments of crisis.

Connect with loved ones you trust to process, cry, or just be together. There is no “right” way to process the ongoing trauma we are experiencing.

Monitor your news and social media intake. To the degree that you are able, avoid (re)watching videos of death, or getting stuck in the traumatic news cycle.

Remember that we are in this together. As a function of White Supremacy, communities of Color can find themselves pitted against one another, getting caught in horizontal aggression and/or the Oppression Olympics. Instead of getting caught in that cycle, or “keeping score,” consider ways to coalition build and show up for one another across identities.

If you are an ally looking to support impacted communities.

Connect with your friends, family, peers, and colleagues by helping them to understand why ongoing racial violence is traumatic and overwhelming for communities of color.

Take the time to explore local organizations who are rooted in ending racial violence in MD, and more broadly across the United States.

Take the time to learn more about the impacts of racial trauma and the history of racial violence in this country. What we are experiencing today, is not new and has not necessarily ever stopped. Take the time to explore more deeply the historical context of white supremacy, racism and xenophobia in this country and the ways it continues to show up today.

Instead of getting caught up in hashtag wars, explore the lived realities of the victims of violence - learn their names and about their communities - remind yourself that they were living human beings, not just social media trends.

If you are confused by everyone’s anger.

Instead of thinking solely about what you might see as a singular current issue at hand, consider the number of BIPOC community members who have been accosted, murdered, etc. as connected to racism and xenophobia in the past two months alone. From spas in Atlanta to Fedex in Indianapolis to Minneapolis and California - there are far too many to name, but the patterns are present and clear.

Consider that we are not only talking about systemic issues, we are also talking about real people whose lives were taken - real living, breathing human beings whose lives were taken at the hands of someone else. Lean as much as you can into compassion, empathy, perspective taking, and radical love for humanity. As mentioned above, explore the lived realities of the victims of violence - learn their names and about their communities remind yourself that they were living human beings, not just social media trends.

Explore concepts like Racial Battle Fatigue and Race Based Traumatic Stress to support a more deep exploration of the impacts of racial trauma and the history of racial violence in this country.

Take the time to explore more deeply the history of white supremacy, racism, and xenophobia in this country. As you explore this history be careful not to give in to defensiveness, shame, or guilt, instead sit with any discomfort you may be experiencing and explore why those feelings may be present for you.

If you are overwhelmed and need to connect.

While our i3b staff team will not be hosting a healing or processing space this week, we are still offering times to connect with us personally. We offer this space for you to join us individually, or in small groups.

In closing, I offer this - “Revolutions do not happen only in grand moments in public view but also in small pockets of people coming together to inhabit a new way of being.” - Valerie Kaur

No matter who you are or where you are, we know that we are all navigating a lot and are all impacted by country-wide and international violence. We also know that ongoing racial violence and trauma uniquely impacts certain members of our UMBC community in ways that are pervasive, intergenerational, ongoing, and quite frankly, terrifying. Please create and protect the time you each need to care for yourself, and if you have the capacity, others. If you are feeling that you have the emotional ability and the privilege to detach from our current events, I invite you to invite others into community with you to explore new ways of being moving forward.

In solidarity and with radical love,

-Jasmine A. Lee, on behalf of the full Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) team

i3b Events for Seniors

The Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion and Belonging is hosting two separate ceremonies for Spring 2021 and Fall 2021 seniors this May! There are two different deadlines mentioned below:

Both ceremonies are specific in centering graduating students who hold marginalized identities. These ceremonies provide an intimate space to celebrate these students' collective accomplishments with their loved ones and supporters.

Annual Lavender Celebration (co-sponsored by Women’s Center and LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Assosciation) and Black and Latine/x Graduation (in partnership with the Chapter of Black and Latino Alumni, CBLA). With the spring semester soon coming to a close, that means these annual celebrations are coming up soon!

Black and Latine/x Celebration will be held on Tuesday, May 4th from 4:00PM-5:30PM EST via Webex. The Black and Latine/x Graduation is a new collaboration from a preexisting program that was founded by CBLA. This event will highlight the successes of current UMBC Black and Latine/x students and alumni.

The 8th Annual Lavender Celebration will be held on Tuesday, May 11th from 5:00PM-6:30PM EST via Webex. One of the key components of the Lavender celebration is to recognize LGBTQ+ and ally community members at UMBC that have had a significant impact on our campus. This year, we are also opening nominations for student keynote(s) so we can hear from graduates about their LGBTQ+ student experience at UMBC and what it has meant to them. Nominations can be submitted via Qualtrics until Friday, April 23rd at 11:59pm EST.

If you do not identify within these groups or as a graduate, we encourage you to still attend to be in community, as well as share it with your colleagues, peers, and friends. Family members and loved ones are welcome!
