On behalf of the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the student researchers and artists, their mentors, and the guests who participated in URCAD 25 Online this year. Over the course of the week, 11,272 people visited and 3,511comments were posted to students' VT presentations. Visitors logged on from all over the world, including Spain, Indonesia, Nigeria, Brazil, Bhutan, Germany, and the U.K.

A special thanks goes out to Michael Mower, UAA’s IT Web, and Graphic Design Specialist, and to our partners in the Division of Information Technology, especially Peter Ariev and Josh Abrams, for helping to host URCAD online using the VoiceThread platform. Thank you also to our Alumni Keynote Speaker, Klaudine Wakasa, for her inspiring words of wisdom in these challenging times. Thanks also goes to Dr. Jodi Kelber-Kaye for moderating the live Q&A with Klaudine. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of URCAD, Diane Lee, Kathy Sutphin, Janet McGlynn, and Elizabeth Pennington recorded a fireside chat about the history of the event- thank you! I would also like to acknowledge the URCAD Selection Committee and its chair, Dr. Stephen Miller, for all their work in making selections and giving students feedback on their abstracts, and Dr. Raimi Quiton and Dr. Timothy Phin for helping prepare the students to present. And thank you to Provost Philip Rous and Dean Katharine Cole for their continued support of the event.

You will still be able to view the presentations throughout the summer, although some students may choose to turn off their comment function. To view student projects, see the URCAD presenter listing and click on any VT icon. Projects are also viewable by department. Be sure to check out the UMBC news story about URCAD which will be out next week.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for URCAD 2022, which will be held next year on Wednesday, April 20, 2022! Stay safe, and we hope to see you next year on campus for URCAD XXIV!

Intern of the Week: José Alarcon Jr. for Information Systems

<Tagline>Check out José's internship with CMS!</Tagline>

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

CMS is a federal agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that works in partnership with states to provide health coverage for more than 70 million beneficiaries through programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Throughout the course of the pandemic, I have been providing support to the Data & Systems Group in the AWS team in maintaining and operating with on-demand cloud computing to allow high-powered analytic capabilities for structured and unstructured data sets. I also assisted in the proper governance for multimillion-dollar AWS purchases to ensure costs and resources are managed within budget while meeting the needs of the database infrastructure teams.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the position at the Career Fair provided by the UMBC Career Center in January of 2020 and submitted my application the same month.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have really enjoyed learning about cloud computing, since it reflects how powerful resources can be used remotely and the impact it has behind-the-scenes.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Some of my contributions in the Data & Systems Group include enhancing and advancing the capabilities in DevSecOps (Development, Security & Operations) that are crucial as the team develops and implements software and data products to support Medicaid and CHIP, which is very important for more than 70 million beneficiaries, especially in the middle of a pandemic.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice would be that in order to qualify for an internship, you don't need to be the smartest student in your class. You don't need to know everything. I have learned that most employers look for personality, work ethic, and the eagerness to learn. And lastly, to go outside often and ground yourself.

Photovoice is a participatory research method that aims for participant and community engagement and empowerment. The method involves participants taking photographs relating to their lived experiences, often relating to social problems, and then displaying these photographs at public exhibitions to promote broader awareness and social change (Wang & Redwood-Jones, 2001). Although many studies report using this method as a form of participatory research, there may be wide variation in how, when, and to what extent researchers engage in partnerships with individuals who are not affiliated with academia. From a larger systematic review of studies using participatory research methodologies, we selected the 27 articles that mentioned photovoice in their title or abstract. Our research examined whether and how researchers partook in power sharing, identity and culture acknowledgment, and resource exchange throughout the six phases of research. We anticipated that photovoice is most collaborative during data collection and analysis phases of research. We hope this study will encourage researchers using photovoice to reflect on and enhance their use of participatory methods across the stages of research.

For the past 11 months, COVID-19 has impacted the quality of life and learning of UMBC students’, which in turn has possibly affected their academic success and engagement. The pandemic has elicited potential financial, medical, and academic strains for students. This study will investigate variables that positively and negatively affect students’ academic success during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are currently collecting data from UMBC undergraduate students, by inquiring them to complete an online survey that includes questionnaires about their motivation, engagement, and self-reported GPA. Additional factors such as family and peer support, institutional support, student home environment, and access to technology are being measured. Potential stressors include lack of financial income, deprecation in mental health, and inadequate access to technology. The descriptive results will demonstrate what the stressors and protective factors are for UMBC undergraduates during COVID-19. Furthermore, regression analyses will show the effects of these two categories of factors on these students’ academic engagement and achievement. We also will conduct analyses to see if various subgroups of students (e.g., first generation students) are differentially affected by the impact of COVID-19 or have independent factors affecting them.

Tom joined the UMBC community in 1972 and made significant contributions to building the university from the ground up. His creative approach to teaching cell biology and dedicated mentorship touched the lives of countless students and faculty members.

According to biological sciences chair, Phil Farabaugh, “He was a great colleague and a passionate teacher. He influenced generations of UMBC biology graduates and produced some terrific Ph.D. scientists as well.”

As one of the early biological sciences faculty members at UMBC, Tom helped build the department into a collegial community that persists today.

As remote work and the pandemic continues, unfortunately the nation is seeing an increase in internet and phone scams and attacks. These attacks and scams take many forms. For example, recently we have managed fake job offers, fake checks, fake charities, and unemployment fraud.

We need you to be aware of this problem, vigilant with your personal information, and help us all work together to make sure scammers and hackers are not successful.

For offers that appear to come from members of the UMBC community, directly call or email the person making the offer after looking them up in the UMBC Directory.

Oysters support one of the largest and most important fisheries in the Chesapeake Bay. They provide many ecological services such as water filtration, denitrification, and habitat for other species. However, due to issues such as habitat degradation, disease-causing parasites, and over-harvesting, the number of oysters in the bay has significantly decreased. I am interested in seeing how protecting oyster reefs affect other species that live around them, specifically fish and crustaceans. To answer this question, I analyzed GoPro footage of oyster reefs from three tributaries in the Chesapeake Bay: the James, Great Wicomico, and Choptank Rivers. Each tributary had one reef that was actively harvested and a neighboring reef where harvesting was prohibited. I watched each video and recorded the number and type of fish and crustaceans that I saw and tried to identify each to the species level. I found that there was a higher abundance of fish and crustaceans on protected reefs compared to harvested reefs, as well as higher diversity on protected reefs. This study provides evidence that fish and crustacean species benefit from creating no-harvesting areas and highlights the importance of oyster reefs for healthy ecosystems.

This work was funded, in part, by the Chesapeake Research Consortium’s C-StREAM program.

USM COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements

Dear UMBC Community,

Today the University System of Maryland announced that it will require COVID-19 vaccination for all eligible students, faculty, and staff who will be on a Maryland campus in Fall 2021.

We are encouraged by this decision because we agree with Chancellor Perman that “Mandating a COVID vaccine is the most effective strategy we have” and that if we want to have students return to campus, “then we have to do everything we can to protect [our] safety.”

We also understand that there are additional details related to this requirement that need to be determined and communicated, including how we will accommodate medical and religious exceptions.

UMBC will host a virtual vaccine information session with medical experts and share suggestions on making vaccine appointments this afternoon, Friday, April 23 at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend; login details are available here.

University Health Services has been approved to administer vaccines on campus for community members and is awaiting doses. We currently do not know when the doses will be available and will notify our community when they are. In the meantime, as vaccine availability in Maryland has increased dramatically, we encourage each of you to seek vaccination. We are preparing to launch a system to collect and verify vaccine information from community members and hope to share this and a detailed timeline next week. We ask for your patience as we develop and test new systems.

This Inspirational Talks series invites speakers each semester from all over the country to discuss personal experiences relating to their identity, research and/or global issues that impact diversity, equity and inclusion. PAWTalks provides an interactive, cultural sharing experience by highlighting the richness of the various cultures through speakers from around the country representing diverse backgrounds.

This PAWTalk features its very first panel of speakers that will discuss the intersection of LGBTQ+ identity and religion/spirituality, specifically how each of these identities interact with one another for someone who identifies with both communities and/or implements LGBTQ+ inclusive practices within their religious/spiritual communit(y/ies). Each speaker will share their specific experiences, to various questions including:

How they “arrived” at this moment where both of these identities could co-exist and whether that transition was easy or difficult to navigate?

If and how other identity groups (e.g. age, race, class, gender) have played a role within their LGBTQ+ and/or religious/spiritual experience?

What (if any) LGBTQ+ specific topics come up within their specific religious/spiritual communities?

How might LGBTQ+ individuals who may not have had such a positive experience with religion or religious/spiritual communities be receptive to exploring their spirituality (if that is something they would like to explore)?

What are some ways their religious/spiritual community have done work in regards to their inclusive practices to encourage participation from LGBTQ+ community members?

How to spot toxic behavior that can be dangerous for LGBTQ+ people within a religious/spiritual community?

And many more!
