Interact Dialogues – September 5 – October 18, 2021

TheInteract Dialogues Program, is an experience designed for first year and transfer students to learn and practice skills to become inclusive leaders and engaged community members. Each dialogue group is facilitated by Resident Assistants and past Interact participants. You will meet in-person small groups for a short, weekly session to learn foundational dialogues skills, and to practice empathetic and generous listening, cross-cultural storytelling, and critical self-reflection. Participating in Interact also makes you eligible to apply for our IDEAL internship peer facilitators program! For more information or to sign up, email us atinteract@umbc.edu.

“How to College” sessions w/ i3b & the Academic Success Center 

Transitioning into college is not always easy… especially if you are first in your family to attend, if you are a part of a marginalized community, or if you regularly find yourself with more questions than answers. Don’t worry, we are here to help! Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) has partnered with the Academic Success Center to bring you three sessions that focus on helping you develop the skills and tools you need to experience first year success! Sessions will take place virtually on October 19 and 26 and November 2 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Not only will we explore academic success skills and principles, we will also explore tools for navigating issues of discrimination, bias and microaggressions within academic spaces, and focus on the many ways our identities are assets within the college environment. As we prepare to welcome students and employees back to campus for a new academic year, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on our shared goals, values, and commitment to each other, and to reaffirm UMBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence. 

UMBC is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the campus community and recognizes its responsibility to support an environment that is free from discrimination and bias, including sexual harassment, interpersonal violence, and related misconduct. UMBC values safety; diversity of thought, background and ability; social responsibility; lifelong learning; equity; and civic engagement. Consistent with these principles, UMBC does not discriminate in offering equal access to its educational programs and activities.

UMBC’s Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) is responsible for promoting and supporting the University’s core values of inclusive excellence and equity, and has primary responsibility for managing UMBC’s efforts related to Title IX and civil rights issues, including discrimination, harassment, hate, and bias.

OEI’s work requires the active engagement of campus partners and each member of the UMBC community to reduce harm as we continue to build a caring, equitable, and inclusive community. In order to support the UMBC community in this partnership, OEI provides a mandatory annual training program on such topics as sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention; it also provides information on how to report instances of sexual harassment, sexual violence and hate/bias to OEI. This year the required training is being offered online through SafeColleges and was assigned to students on July 30, 2021, and to employees on August 23, 2021. OEI also engages the campus community via the Inclusion Council, a group consisting of students, faculty, staff, and alumni that advises OEI and provides a venue to discuss relevant issues. You are so close to earning your UMBC degree! Keep up the momentum! 

If you've earned 90 or more academic credits, you received a message from the Registrar's Office informing you that you are eligible to apply for graduation. 

However, eligibility is only the start of the graduation application process. Below are four simple steps you can take now to ensure that you’ll soon be celebrating the completion of your UMBC degree.

Note: Even if you do not plan to attend the commencement ceremony, you still need to apply to graduate in order to earn your degree.

Step 1: Review your Graduation Card 

Once you’ve earned 90 academic credits, you will have access to a Graduation Card on your myUMBC Profile page. The Graduation Card is a personalized, step-by-step guide that will ensure a smooth process forward until you cross the finish line with your UMBC degree.

Please be reminded that UMBC confers baccalaureate degrees to undergraduate students who successfully complete a course of study that meets the minimum university requirements outlined in the Undergraduate Baccalaureate Degree Completion Policy. Only those students who have every single requirement needed for degree completion (i.e., currently enrolled in all remaining courses and/or pending transfer credit to be sent to UMBC), will be permitted to apply for graduation and participate in the Commencement ceremony.

Step 2: Wrap up any outstanding details ASAP!

  • If the major, minor, or certificate program listed in your graduation card is out of date, or if you have additional majors or minors that you need to add/remove, submit a new Declaration of Major form.
  • If you have Advanced Placement or CLEP scores or transfer credits from another institution please make sure that you have an approved Verification of Transferability Form on file and are prepared to submit the official scores/transcripts.

Step 3: Apply for Graduation 

You should check your Graduation Card periodically to ensure that you are staying on track with all degree requirements as this will be the only way to access the application for graduation when the time comes. Please note that students may only participate in one commencement ceremony based upon the semester in which all degree requirements will be complete.

If you intend to complete all degree requirements by the end of the Fall 2021 semester, please note that Wednesday, September 15th is the last day undergraduates can apply for December Graduation by logging into the Graduation Card on the myUMBC Profile page.

Step 4: Let the celebration begin! 

Participating in the commencement ceremony and other celebratory activities on campus is the culmination of all of your hard work. Take time to recognize all it took to get you to this moment and be proud of your accomplishments!

As we prepare to welcome students and employees back to campus for a new academic year, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on our shared goals, values, and commitment to each other, and to reaffirm UMBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence. 

UMBC is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the campus community and recognizes its responsibility to support an environment that is free from discrimination and bias, including sexual harassment, interpersonal violence, and related misconduct. UMBC values safety; diversity of thought, background and ability; social responsibility; lifelong learning; equity; and civic engagement. Consistent with these principles, UMBC does not discriminate in offering equal access to its educational programs and activities.

UMBC’s Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) is responsible for promoting and supporting the University’s core values of inclusive excellence and equity, and has primary responsibility for managing UMBC’s efforts related to Title IX and civil rights issues, including discrimination, harassment, hate, and bias.

OEI’s work requires the active engagement of campus partners and each member of the UMBC community to reduce harm as we continue to build a caring, equitable, and inclusive community. In order to support the UMBC community in this partnership, OEI provides a mandatory annual training program on such topics as sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention; it also provides information on how to report instances of sexual harassment, sexual violence and hate/bias to OEI. This year the required training is being offered online through SafeColleges and was assigned to students on July 30, 2021, and to employees on August 23, 2021. OEI also engages the campus community via the Inclusion Council, a group consisting of students, faculty, staff, and alumni that advises OEI and provides a venue to discuss relevant issues. OEI strives to make your learning and working environment free from harm and to provide resources to community members. If you or someone you know is experiencing violence or discrimination, please know that support is available.

Women's Center Fall 2021 Hours of Operation:

Beginning on the first day of classes, the Women's Center will resume our traditional in-person hours of operation and will welcome community members into our physical space. 

In order to maintain physical distancing, the lounge space will be operating at 50% capacity. Masks are required to be in our space. 

Our Fall Hours are:
Mondays through Thursdays: 10am - 5:30pm
Fridays: 10am - 4pm

Finally, you can experience our new comfy couches! Our usual plates/mugs/utensils will not be available so please bring your own if you plan on drinking or eating in the space.

While we are physically open, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714.  

The Women's Center lactation room is also available for Fall 2021 reservations and use. For details, contact us at womenscenter@umbc.edu or visit our myUMBC post.

Individualized Support Meetings:
