Chancellor Perman Appoints Presidential Search Committee

To the UMBC Community:

I’m pleased to share that the USM Board of Regents today
approved the members of the UMBC President Search and Screening Committee,
whose membership includes students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other
university stakeholders. Below is the press release that will be distributed
    later this afternoon.

The search committee will continue to engage with the UMBC
community and will ultimately develop a short list of outstanding candidates
for the UMBC presidency. That list will be forwarded to the Board of Regents
and to me, and the board will make the final selection.

I thank all the committee members for taking on this work to
find a leader who will build upon the university’s considerable success. The
work of the search committee is beginning now, and I look forward to its
    progress.

Baltimore, MD (Oct. 14, 2021) – Jay A. Perman, chancellor of the University System of
Maryland (USM), has appointed—and the USM Board of Regents has approved—the

submission of a short list of the most-qualified presidential candidates for
the Board of Regents to consider.

“I’m grateful to Dr. Gourdine and all
the search committee members who’ve signed on to this work, understanding what
lies in the balance,” said Chancellor Perman. “Hiring exceptional presidents

regents do. We know UMBC was transformed under Dr. Hrabowski, establishing
itself as a leader in teaching, research, and equity—in student achievement and
community engagement. So we know we need a president who can harness the

Academic Advising 101 at UMBC

Did you know that every student at UMBC has an assigned academic advisor?

For most students, this will be a professor in your academic major department. Others will work with a professional (full-time) advisor, at least until they have reached their junior year or selected a major. If you are currently exploratory/undecided, you would work with the Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising.

Something a bit unique to UMBC is that all students are required to meet with their advisor at least once a semester, prior to registration. You will not be able to enroll in classes for the next semester until you get clearance from an advisor!

But let’s back up a bit. What exactly is academic advising?

An academic advisor’s role is to assist you in planning your academic career at UMBC. You can talk to your advisor about:

Your adjustment to college

Major and career choices

Course selection

Long-term academic planning

Academic difficulty

Academic “extras” such as minors, internships, study abroad, etc.

As you may surmise from this list, your advisor is a vital member of your academic support team and someone we recommend you connect with regularly, beyond the required mid-semester check in, to take full advantage of their support.

So how do you find out who your advisor is? Easy.

Below is a link to the department contacts for all majors. The person listed as “advising coordinator” or “advising contact” can help you find out who your advisor is or assign you an advisor:

Departmental Advising - Main Campus

Departmental Advising - Shady Grove

In preparation for an advising appointment, it’s helpful to review your degree card on your myUMBC Profile. Here you can:

Develop and update your degree plan

Check your degree progress

See how coursework transferred over from your previous institution

Access suggested four-year pathways for completing your degree program

Additionally, you will want to develop a list of questions/topics to discuss with your advisor in order to give the meeting some structure. To help with that conversation, ask yourself:

How am I doing in my major? Do I need to make any changes or seek academic support next semester?

How long will it take me to complete all my coursework?

Does my academic plan contain all my GEPs, upper-level credits, and writing intensive?

Should I plan to take a winter class?

Are there other topics I’m interested in exploring by adding a minor or certificate program?

In terms of spring advising and registration, the schedule of classes will be available on Monday, October 25th. You can review the course offerings and discuss them with your academic advisor when you meet.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is seeking Volunteers

<Tagline>A great opportunity to gain experience!</Tagline>

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance will be holding a few information sessions throughout the
fall semester, in case you have any questions about volunteering with VITA. The president of VITA@UMBC will be going over what it's like to be a
VITA volunteer, and will have previous volunteers come in to talk about
     their experiences.

To join VITA's email list and get updates about training sessions, fill out the form at the link here: https://forms.gle/B1dt2eFHCng1QGjC6

links and/or more details will be sent as it gets closer to the
training date. We hope to have free snacks at the November 2nd meetings, so be sure to come by!

Information on being a volunteer:
During
the fall, you won't have to do much - just expressing your interest,
and waiting for us to reach out to you. Around/during winter break,
you'll be completing training. Training this year is online and
asynchronous, with one final in-person training session the first week
of the Spring 2022 semester - this is when you'd be taking the
certification exam. Tax-preparing sessions will occur throughout
February, March, and April. You can also volunteer with us without
having to file taxes and take the exam. In that case, you'd be helping
with client intake, signing in, etc. All volunteers will be asked to do
at least five 4-hour shifts. Emails will be sent later in the semester
to register for being a volunteer.

I know that it seems like an
intense experience, and might be intimidating. You'll have tons of
people around to answer your questions - plus, it's really fun!
