Introducing the Maxine Tracy Wellness Room

<Tagline>Same great space with a Wonderful New Name!</Tagline>

This Wednesday, the Women's Center's lactation room will be named the Maxine Tracy Wellness Room!!

Our new name comes in response to the generosity of Dr. Kate Tracy, M.A. ’01, Ph.D. ’03, psychology, who created an endowment for the Women's Center and named it in honor of her grandmother, Maxine Tracy.

"Raised in a small, mid-western town, Tracy looks back on her grandmother Maxine as a source of unconditional love and support. “My grandmother was a caregiver. In many ways, she was the northstar in my compass, and no matter where I roamed or what challenges life has brought, I always felt anchored—in the most positive way—to her. She did what she could where she was for as many as she could in the way that she could. She opened opportunities for a lot of women. And she will always be one of my heroes,” says Tracy, who is honoring the late Maxine with an endowment in her name to the Women’s Center. "

The above excerpt comes from "Living Her Values" written by Randianne Leyshon '09. Read the full story to learn more about Maxine and Kate and the ways in which the Women's Center will benefit from this generous endowment for years to come.

And, as mentioned in the title of this post, while it has a new name, the wellness space is still a space to support lactation, prayer, and meditation. For those looking to make reservations to use this space as a lactation room, contact the Women's Center at womenscenter@umbc.edu or visit this post for more details.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Open Enrollment for Health Benefits begins today, October 18, 2021, and will be open through 5 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2021. Employees who are not making health benefit changes, do not need to take action. However, if you wish to continue a healthcare/dependent care Flexible Spending Account, you must re-enroll for coverage. The State of Maryland will send out important emails via the SPS Workday system (stateofmaryland@myworkday.com) regarding Open Enrollment. Retirees will have information mailed to their home address directly from the State of Maryland.

Open Enrollment will continue to be online in the SPS Workday system. Employees should visit the Human Resources website for more information on the SPS Workday system and for detailed instructions on accessing your workday account. During this time, employees can enroll in and/or make changes to their health benefits to become effective January 1, 2022. Employees choosing to make a healthcare or dependent care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) election for 2022 must login to SPS Workday prior to 5 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2021.

We are pleased to announce that all existing plans and vendors will remain in place for 2022. However, the State has passed along minimal rate changes that will impact the medical, prescription, and dental plans in 2022. CareFirst, United Healthcare, and Kaiser medical plan rates will increase approximately 5 percent. CVS Caremark prescription plan rates will increase 10 percent for 2022. Dental plan rates will increase between 2.2 and 5 percent, depending on the plan and coverage level. The State of Maryland Accidental Death and Dismemberment and Life Insurance coverage rates will not increase in 2022. Open Enrollment rates and materials are posted on the HR Website.

Intern of the Week: Clair Volkening for English!

<Tagline>Check out Clair's internship at Baltimore Museum of Industry</Tagline>

    Name: Clair Volkening

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Baltimore Museum of Industry

    Position Title: Editorial Intern

Major or Program: English BA Communications and Technology Track

    Current Class Level: Junior

    Work Term: Summer 2021

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I wrote blog posts for the museum's "From Point to Point" blog, which is part of a larger project the museum is working on called the Bethlehem Steel Legacy Project. I researched the history of the old steel mill at Sparrows Point in Baltimore, interviewed sources, and published the posts I wrote to the blog.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the internship from the English department's internship coordinator, Professor Deborah Rudacille. She sent the opportunity my way and I submitted a cover letter and resume to the museum around March.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

The flexibility of the work and the joy that everyone who works at the museum exudes. This summer helped open my eyes to what is possible for me after college and gave me a glimpse into what doing what you love can look like.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The steel mill (Bethlehem Steel) at Sparrows Point is something that I don't think a lot of people outside of Baltimore know about. However, this steel mill was the largest mill in the world for a time and affected so many people in the Baltimore area. By writing about the steel mill I hope that I provide a way for others to learn about the company and its impacts.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Just keep looking around and putting yourself out there.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

I liked getting a taste of what life could look like after I graduate. For me, life post graduation has always looked like a hazy gray area. After finishing this internship the haze has started to become a little bit more defined.
