What have you lost due to COVID? What are you grieving? Who can you share your grief with?

The Pandemic Grief Processing Group aims to make space for honoring and acknowledging the losses students, staff, and faculty within the UMBC community have experienced in these last 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. This discussion-based program will explore the different kinds of grief and loss people may be experiencing individually and as a society, giving language and space for each of the participants to express their personal stories.

Our intention for this group is to create a space for processing, connection, healing, and collective growth. We will collaborate in the creation of a community grief ritual together even as we are still moving through our grief in different ways.

PGPG will be run as a 3-week program. The group will meet for a 90-minute session, once a week, for three consecutive weeks. The first two sessions will be online on Fridays, February 18th and 25th, 2:00-3:30 and then our hope is that the group will conclude with a final in-person session on Friday, March 4th, 2:00-3:30 in the Women’s Center. To indicate your comfort with meeting in person, please see the commitment form below.

Spring 2022 COVID Measures for Commuters

<Tagline>Important Information; Please Read</Tagline>

Dear Commuter Students,

Welcome to Spring 2022 at UMBC! Whether you are a new or returning Retriever, we are excited to have you and look forward to connecting. If there is ever any way Off-Campus Student Services can be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us or stop by our office in Commons 1A02, right next to the Bookstore.

As we gear up for another semester, OCSS wants to make sure we continue to keep our UMBC community as safe as possible from the Omicron variant of COVID-19. We have been extremely successful in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 because of all of you and that is not lost on us. You make the difference and we appreciate you for that. To ensure that we remain on the right path, this letter is intended to review UMBC’s COVID-19 response and the safety measures that will continue to keep our community safe.

KN95 masks are required. All community members are currently required to wear a KN95 or equivalent mask indoors in public spaces at UMBC. This includes in classrooms, on transportation, and inside dining facilities when not actively eating. KN95 equivalent masks include: an N95, KN95, or KF94 mask, FFP2-3, or a double surgical mask. Free KN95 masks are available during business hours at the UMBC Police Station, Campus Card and Dining Services, the Retriever Activities Center, The Commons Information Center, and the Albin O. Kuhn Library Circulation Desk.

Entry testing is required for Spring 2022. All community members are required to take an on-campus PCR test on the first day they return to campus.
I was studying DATA 604 under Prof. Charles Givre. He informed us of internship openings in his company i.e., DataDistillr. I applied for the position as soon as I heard of the opportunity. He conducted an interview and then I was hired.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Everyone at my organization is super helpful and super smart. Everyday was a learning experience in itself while being fun all the while.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Although I have much to learn, I feel I am able to find unique and valuable insights from data to help clients and charities find potential donors for fundraisers, marathons, peer-to-peer campaigns, dinners, etc. I was able to help make the world a better place by reaching out to those who would willingly take action to help make it better.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Be willing to learn and do not shy away from experimenting. Keep a to-do list to keep track of your time and effort. Make sure to network within the organization by sending messages at intervals to keep in touch (Don't be nervous, no one bites. Just send messages to say hi, keep it simple). Ask for tasks to be done if you are not given any. Think of ways to contribute and start executing, don't wait.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

I loved how considerate everyone that I contacted from the Career Center was. I liked the training they gave during the internship, it helped me navigate my way around the organization and also helped me be more assertive. The Career Center's constant reminders of the task completion helped me keep on track with my progress and complete the assignments on time.

Being an international student, it was difficult for me to find an internship and for this reason, I am grateful that DataDistillr trusted in me. I have learned how to conduct data analysis and machine learning modeling while being able to conduct meetings with clients on a one-on-one basis. DataDistillr offered me a permanent position and I accepted the offer. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to growing in my career through DataDistillr.

Welcome to Spring Semester 2022: SDS Reminders & Resource

Welcome back, SDS Students!

Are you ready to begin the Spring 2022 Semester? We are delighted to be
back on campus with you and hope you had a restful and healthy
break! The Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) would like to
share some reminders and offer some tips on places to get information and keep connected.

Please follow our MyUMBC group where we list events, reminders, changes or updates related to our office.
Click on the link at https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/sss.

Click the "follow" button, and under the "Notifications" button, please
be sure to click "All Updates" to receive all of our posts.

Submit your Semester Request for your accommodation letters to be sent to your faculty members. How? https://sds.umbc.edu/accommodate-semester-request/

To use your approved accommodations, you need to have submitted a Semester Request for Spring 2022 in the Accommodate online student portal link found on our SDS website. Please review your selected accommodations and courses before clicking on Submit.

**NOTE: Your faculty will not get your letters (nor will you be able
to schedule in-person tests in Accommodate) without a Semester
    Request.**

If you have added/changed a course since you first submitted your Semester Request, please submit a new Semester Request.

    Accommodated testing:

SDS testing is from 9 AM - 4 PM Monday through Friday. Due
to COVID-19, we will continue to have limited seating available due to
capacity/spacing restrictions required for health and safety. Extended
testing hours will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 6:30pm
starting in a few weeks. Please remember, face masks (KN95 or
equivalent) must be worn during testing, and you must be compliant with
    all COVID-19 protocols.

a. If you are taking online or hybrid courses, you will likely be taking tests online. You will NOT schedule these tests in SDS. Instructors
can provide extended time (for those with timed tests) in the platform
they are using. Make sure to remind your instructor(s) that you have
testing accommodations prior to each online test.

b. For in-person tests for courses on the Main Campus, you will need to schedule your tests with SDS at least 2 business days in advance of the test using the Accommodate
portal. You will not be able to schedule in-person tests unless you
have submitted a Semester Request and you are approved for testing
accommodations. We encourage you to schedule all of your in-person tests/quizzes in Accommodate at the beginning of the semester.

c. For in-person tests for courses on the Shady Grove Campus (USG), you will need to follow the procedures established by the Macklin Center for Academic Success (MCAS) DSS office https://shadygrove.umd.edu/student-services/center-for-academic-success/dss. (*For Spring 2022, they are delaying in-person opening for 2 weeks).

    Notetaking:

If you are approved for notetaking assistance as an accommodation, we
encourage you to try assistive technology for notetaking. We have
licenses available for web-based notetaking software called Glean. Glean now includes transcription of the audio that you have recorded using Glean. If you are experiencing a disability-related barrier that prevents you from taking your own notes, please send an email to SDSnotetaking@umbc.edu to receive access or to discuss solutions.

We are available Monday through Friday during regular office hours:
staff have both in-person and telework/remote days. Appointments Front

Please contact us as soon as possible if you experience
disability-related challenges in your courses. We are here to assist you
in navigating what may be unfamiliar procedures in order to ensure that
your accommodations are implemented when needed. Staff are available to
