Phenomenally Black, Queer, and Trans

<Tagline>Reflections of Sam and Lauren</Tagline>

This post was written by Lauren Daniels ‘25(she/her/hers) and Sam McCrae ‘25 (he/him/they/them). Lauren is a Queer Black Woman and the Pride Center Intern with i3b. She is a BFA acting student and was in the top 1% of Beyonce listeners last year. Sam is a Black Queer Trans Man and a CDM (community desk manager) with i3b. He is a social work and sociology major and a MASSIVE Spiderman fan.

Image decription: A magazine collage in the shape of a face with the words “Black” in green with a black background, “Queer” in black with a holographic background and “Flesh” written in white with a res background. The words ``Rejecting subjectivity in the African American Novel” are written in black on top of a yellow background. “Alvin J. Henry'' is written in black on top of a blue background.

Ever since Freddy Gray’s death in 2015, I have considered being Black an act of resilience. To exist loudly in a world that was created to uphold whiteness, me simply being proud of my Blackness felt like an act of protest. However, I knew deep down that there was more of me to be discovered but continued to push it away. I realized that I was Bisexual in high school but as time went on and we entered the pandemic, I realized that wasn’t true, in fact Bisexual was not a big enough word to describe my sexual orientation. I found out that I was attracted to Women and Non-Binary folks (which would still be Bisexual but when most people hear the term they think of attraction to “men and women”). I then cycled through different labels such as, Pansexual and Lesbian but they never felt right, I even experiemnted with having no label for my sexuality but that didn’t work for me. I fell in love with the label of Queer as soon as I tried it. It was a broad term that did not require much explanation, an ambiguous term that I could define however I wanted and as I continue to grow over time, this word will continue to describe me and who I love.

Seeing people like Janelle Monae and Cynthia Erivo, and having friends that had been openly Gay/Bi for years made me feel less alone and like I had some sense of community. Truly, being a triple minority is difficult but I have found joy in my intersectional identity. Knowing that not too many people get to experience this and see the world the way that we can. Since Black people, Black Women in particular, have been shut out for so long, we created our own spaces, and Black Queer people have done the same. This resilience empowers me, and as old folks say, we “make somethin’ out of nothin’ ”.

Image description: Janelle Monae wearing a white and black jacket with a Chanel brooch on the right side. Three bucket hats, one white on top and two black on bottom. On the hats you see a green outline of a mug with a flower blooming out of them.

I consider my existence as an act of resistance even more now. In a world run by cis-het white men, I am the exact opposite. To show up as my full self every day, to not just survive in this world but thrive as a Black Queer Woman is an act of protest. To be one of the few (millions) of people who get to experience this identity is a privilege and I plan on experiencing it to the fullest.

Both of our intersectional identities involve being Black. But when you add being Trans and Queer to the mix it adds another layer of pride to our exsistence. Being Black, Trans, and Queer is a unique experience that not very many have. It isn’t one that you often see in the media, so even fewer understand it. Just because it isn’t shared in the media, that doesn’t mean we are any less proud because at the end of the day we are both very proud of our stories.

Growing up, I didn’t know any Black Trans people. I never saw any of us on TV, and there weren't any in my small town, so as a kid I assumed my identity wasn’t one that other people experienced. As I grew up and was able to name my identity, I started to seek out people who identify similarly to the way I do. In doing so I found not only people I shared an identity with, but a community of people who could understand my specific struggles as a Black Transmasculine person.

Being Black and Transmasculine is an experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I got to see the world through the lens of a little Black Girl and be treated as such. Being able to experience firsthand how the world treats Black Girls taught me lessons on empathy and respect that I wouldn’t have been able to learn otherwise. Seeing the ways Black Girls are forced to behave in order to thrive (and even just survive) made me understand the difference in how the world treats them in comparison to other groups. Growing up with the fear of what could happen because I was seen as a Black Girl showed me how I, as a Black Man, can make the Black Women in my life feel safe, as well as respected.

My identity allowed me to explore femininity as a kid without judgment for being “too feminine”. I got to have long hair and wear “girly” clothes; which is something that I would never have been able to do if I was assigned male at birth. I also got to explore more stereotypically masuculine clothing styles and activities while being viewed as a “tomboy”. This ability to express myself without having to truly explain my identity made it easier for me to understand my relationship with my Transmasc identity and femininity.

Depsite having to deal with the struggles that come with being Black, Queer, and Trans, I love the experience I get as a Black Queer Trans person. Being a part of this community that has a history of resilience, love, and solidarity that continues to hold those same values today, is something I couldn’t imagine myself without. The Black Queer community, to me, truly feels like a family. We may identify differently and move through the world differently, but we have this baseline understanding of one another. Even those with extremely complex identities can find somewhere within this community where they feel protected and loved. Having people who you can connect with when you’re in such a small minority can feel impossible, but having positive connections with people within those communities can shift how you feel about those identities, and how others perceive them.

Being Black and Queer means facing oppression on all sides of your identity, but it also comes with a community that creates a feeling of belonging. Having these spaces and connections helps us remember that we are never alone in our struggles and have an entire community alongside us to lift us up when we are down and celebrate us when we succeed. For example when MJ Rodriguez won her Golden Globe she said that “This is for the entire LGBTQIA community”, as she is the very first Transgender person to win a Golden Globe. Anytime a Black Trans person is awarded and celebrated by those outside the community, it feels like a win for us all. Hearing her acceptance speech was a very moving experience for me. To see her awarded for her role in a show about Black Trans Women, as an Afro-Latina Woman shows that people outside of the community are starting to see us in a way that is similar to the way we see ourselves.

Image description: MJ Rodriguez shot from the torso up. She is wearing a green metallic outfit with a cut out at the top from the collarbone down to the chest. with ruffles on the wrist. She is also wearing a silver choker with two silver earrings. She has a wide smile on her face and long straight black hair.

To help create that sense of community on campus, UMBC has created some spaces for Queer BIPOC on campus such as The Pride Center (University Center, 201-D), The Mosaic (The Commons, 2b23) along with QPOC and LSU which helps us form our queer community. For me, I always feel safe and respected when I’m in the Pride Center, or when I’m attending Spectrum meetings in the Women’s Center. Despite where you are in your journey or how you identify it is important to know that your story and your experiences matter and that there is a place for you on campus during Black History Month and beyond.

Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation Staff Update

I am delighted to share that Gina King has been promoted to Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation. Gina came to UMBC in 2018 as the Associate Director of Recruitment, Events, and Orientation.

Prior to joining the campus community, Gina was the Director of College Counseling at the Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore and before that Director of Admissions at McDaniel College. In these positions, she has played an integral role in helping the schools and students have a successful experience in the college selection and enrollment process. This was especially evident during the past two years in responding to the challenges of the COVID pandemic. During this time, Gina and her team adapted many of our recruitment and events to best meet the needs of the campus and, most importantly, our students and families. Working with campus partners from Marketing to Enrollment Management and DoIT, Gina and her entire team played a critical role in the university enrolling its largest, first-year class ever. In addition, she has been a leader in the initial implementation of the Salesforce CRM that will successfully position the university to engage our students from prospects to alumni. Her mentorship of staff and collaborative approach are also noteworthy, and I am confident the campus will benefit tremendously from working with her in this increased capacity.

As Gina assumes the role of Director and oversees the daily operations of the office, I will be able to focus more of my work as the Assistant Vice Provost for strategic partnerships and enrollment initiatives. I will be working with campus partners such as school systems, community colleges, and community-based organizations, to further strengthen and nurture these critical relationships and to create pathways for students to pursue opportunities for study at UMBC.

Please join me in congratulating Gina in her new role!

Work on transferable skills!

The skills you’ll acquire throughout your academic life offer more to your future career than you might realize! As a student, you develop technical skills related to your major. Engaging in a wide range of experiences outside of the classroom will help you build well-rounded, transferable skills to enhance your academic work and make you stand out from the crowd.

By reflecting on some of the following questions, you can start to figure out what types of meaningful experiences could complement the academic field you are pursuing:

What do you consider your overall strengths?

What are some interests you have outside of your academic major?

How would you rate your communication skills?

Do you have any leadership experience?

Do you enjoy working in groups or by yourself?

Do you consider yourself creative?

What’s your approach to problem-solving?

Here are some ways to help you build transferable skills at UMBC!

Join a student organization - Besides being a meaningful way to connect with your peers over shared interests, being involved in a student organization is a great way to take the initiative on projects you care about and work together outside of the classroom. You can also add your voice and find your place within our campus community. You can also stay connected through both virtual and in-person campus life initiatives!

Connect with the Career Center - Gaining real-world experience through an internship, research, or a co-op experience is one of the best ways to make yourself a competitive candidate for full-time jobs and graduate/professional school. The Career Center offers career advising and counseling, networking events, on-campus recruiting, on-campus interviews, career, professional skills education, and applied learning opportunities (internships, co-ops, and research) to help prepare you to envision your possible future career opportunities!

Consider adding a minor to your degree - Complementing your primary major with a minor or certificate program can be a great way to add extra knowledge and new skills to your bachelor’s degree. This can also be a great way to explore other personal interests you might have as well as make you unique in the eyes of future employers. Exploring programs such as foreign language studies or entrepreneurship can be great additions to any major. Check out all the possibilities and talk them over with your advisor!

Get involved with Service Learning and Community Engagement through the Shriver Center – Ever want to apply what you’re learning outside of the classroom? The Shriver Center has you covered! Through its Service-Learning and Community partnerships, you could step outside the boundaries of the classroom and experience the real world. Through The Shriver Center’s many opportunities, the UMBC community can continue to serve organizations through capacity-building projects and digital delivery of services.

Consider becoming a student worker – UMBC has lots of job opportunities for students. This can be a great way to apply what you’ve learned at UMBC to help other students and gain useful job experience yourself! From tutoring to working in various offices around campus, be sure to check out UMBCworks and the Federal Work-Study job list for campus job postings throughout the year!

Share your research - All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship, or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at the Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD). URCAD XXVI is now open for applications and will be held this year from April 18-24th. You will be able to view presentations, watch films, see videos of dance and music performances, view artwork, and interact with presenters during the event. Applications are due by Friday, February 18th, so don’t miss out on this opportunity to share your work with our UMBC community!

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking about all the different experiences UMBC offers and how they might benefit your overall success! What experiences at UMBC have helped you build your skillset?

A Giving Day Q+A with Dr. Kate Tracy

In honor of Giving Day, I reached out to Dr. Kate Tracy M.A. ’01, Ph.D. ’03 to ask her a few questions about the importance of giving and what the experience of giving has meant for her.

You may be familiar with Dr. Tracy’s name because for the past several years, Dr. Tracy has supported the Women’s Center on Giving Day by offering match challenges to our community. She also created the Maxine Tracy Endowment which provides the Women’s Center funding to support our Returning Women Students/Adult Learners Scholars + Affiliates program. It is also the namesake of our Wellness Room! Just recently she began the quest to fund a new endowment, the Kate Tracy Endowment, which will help provide scholarships to UMBC students in the future.

I’ve had the pleasure to get to know Dr. Tracy over the past several years and wanted to share a little bit more about this person who cares so much about the Women’s Center with our community. I had the chance to connect with her and ask her a few questions about the importance of giving and what’s she’s learned from the experience. I hope that learning a little bit more about Dr. Tracy will inspire you to find your “why” this Giving Day!

Jess: You’ve been supporting the Women’s Center for several years now – first to create the Maxine Tracy Endowment and now the Kate Tracy Endowment. What is your motivation behind your giving? And, what have you learned about yourself from the experience of giving?

Dr. Tracy: My original motivation for giving to the Women’s Center at UMBC was to honor my grandmother, Maxine Tracy. She was my hero and a lifelong supporter of women’s professional development. Giving to the Women’s Center was a tangible way for me to honor her influence on my life and continue her legacy of supporting women’s professional development.

I’ve continued my giving to the Center out of gratitude. I feel very grateful for the many ways UMBC is woven into my own professional story. I want to continue to support the Center and be a champion for the work it does.

Jess: In some of our earlier conversations, it was clear to me that you found it important to carve out space for other women to see the possibilities in themselves being philanthropists. Can you share more about why this matters to you?

Dr. Tracy: Women’s philanthropy is often less visible. And I’d like to see that change. One way to foster that change is to share our stories of giving…what motivates us to give…how and what we give—whether it’s our time, talents, or our resources. Every gift—no matter the amount—will make a difference!

Jess: This is the third year you’ve offered a match challenge on behalf of the Women’s Center for Giving Day. What encouragement can you give to our potential donors to help us meet your challenge?

Dr. Tracy: One of the reasons I continue to offer the match challenge on behalf of the Women’s Center for Giving Day is to encourage others to join me in supporting the Center. The programming, support services, and advocacy the Center offers are so important to the UMBC community. I’m proud to be a supporter and want to do whatever I can to encourage others to support the Center and its mission.

You can learn more about Dr. Tracy and her grandmother, Maxine, by reading this UMBC Magazine article entailed Living Her Values that was published last fall (and is featured in the most recent hardcopy version of the UMBC Magazine).

We’re grateful for Dr. Tracy’s support… and for all of our generous donors who give of their talent, treasure, and time. Thank you for you!

And…
