Making a MINOR Change

College can be a great time to explore multiple interests. While your academic major offers a direction for future career paths, adding a minor can also add value to your degree. In addition to the skills and knowledge gained from your major, a minor provides an opportunity for exposure to different fields of study, which can help broaden personal and professional opportunities.

At UMBC, a minor is usually between 18-25 credits and while not mandatory for graduation, can be a terrific addition to any major. Here are some reasons why you should think about considering a minor.

Earn more credits towards graduation!

As you know, it takes 120 total credits, including 45 upper-level credits, to graduate. What if your chosen major doesn’t provide all those credits needed for you to graduate? Adding a minor could help! Many minors offer the flexibility to choose electives based on your own interests within that field of study and there’s usually the chance to get extra upper-level courses done as well. Check out the GEP courses you’ve completed so far for ideas - lower-level courses you’ve already completed could be the pre-requisites needed for a new minor.

Complement your major!

Consider how extra or specialized knowledge could complement your bachelor’s degree. If your minor is in a similar field as your major, this can be a way to explore subtopics within that field and add depth to the focus of your overall studies. This can be excellent preparation for future research specializations if you’re looking to attend graduate or professional school programs as well.

Explore interests outside of your major!

A minor can also be used as a way to explore talents and passions outside of your academic major. Minors can offer the chance to pursue other interests while also teaching you skills different from your major. These programs could serve as a creative outlet and give you the chance to network with students and faculty beyond your major department.

Broaden your job opportunities!

Since a minor is a way to build new skills and gain experience in a different field, this could help you with future job opportunities. Having broad coursework in multiple disciplines could help set you apart as a competitive applicant in the eyes of employers. The academic knowledge as well as other transferrable skills you gain through a minor can be an awesome addition to your resume.

The world is interdisciplinary!

The term “interdisciplinary” is used to describe the integration of more than one academic discipline. We see this phenomenon happening across so many fields today, which is inspiring innovative collaboration to solve complex problems in our society. How might diverse perspectives from other academic fields help you as you prepare for your future career? Choosing a minor with this mentality in mind can help you truly broaden your educational horizons and contribute in unique ways to your future career path.

As you can see, students of all majors can benefit from adding a minor for many different reasons. You can see a full list of degree programs at UMBC, including minors, here as well as departmental advising contacts here.

Here are a few program highlights to get you thinking:

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Minor: Regardless of major, this minor helps students develop an entrepreneurial mindset and skillset that will make them more valuable contributors on the job and in their communities. Involvement in the program will provide access to successful entrepreneurs in the region which will provide valuable networking and mentoring opportunities. Also, check out the concentration in Arts Entrepreneurship.

Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication Minors: A foreign language minor helps you develop communication skills and understand the complexities of an increasingly interdependent, multilingual, and multicultural world. Speaking more than one language and knowing about more than one culture is a definite advantage in any career.

Computing Minor: For those students not majoring in Computer Science, Engineering, or Information Systems but who are interested in programming, this program consists of foundational courses in computing followed by electives from multiple disciplines. This minor prepares students for a world where computing is an integral part of their future, no matter what their major.

Public Health Minor: A minor in Public Health (formerly HAPP) is great for anyone interested in allied health programs, pre-medical studies, biology, sociology, anthropology, non-profit organization or governmental work, healthcare jobs, and more.

Judaic Studies Minor: This interdisciplinary minor provides a curriculum designed to build understanding of Judaism from historical, literary, social, cultural, religious, and philosophical perspectives. It’s great for students interested in careers in fields such as archaeology, historical research, education, social work, Jewish communal service, intercultural and international relations, and complements various humanities and social science majors.

We encourage you to take some time and think about your interests and career goals to see if adding a minor could be right for you! Talk it over with your advisor for more ideas as well and if you’re ready to declare a minor, you can do so using the declaration of major form.

Whether it stems from personal or professional interests, adding new experiences, research, and coursework through a minor could help you towards your future goals in many unique ways.

Are there any minors that you’re considering right now? Let us know!

I currently manage the posts for the office of Summer and Winter programming. I gather useful media for students that is shared on our blog site, hang posters for upcoming events, table at events to inform them about the Department of Professional Services, and critique website layout choices to name a few.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the position from Dr. Loviglio And Professor Hassan! I was in professor Hassan's class in Fall 2021 and she emailed about it.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoy the flexibility that is provided when working in a hybrid setting. I can get in-person training and get help while in person. Then I'm left to my own devices and can produce work to be reviewed when I come back. Critique is easier for me to understand in person because little nuances can get lost over text. I also have class right next to Sherman (where my internship is located) so it only made sense that I walk there after class!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I think what I've used to make the most impact so far is writing. Particularly for my upcoming post on the Career Center! I think many students gloss over what the Career Center has to offer until they're in the last month of their senior semester. The Career Center is such an amazing resource. It's the primary reason I have my current internship and the one I had this past summer! I also collect articles that can be of help to the student body. For example, topics like: stress management, eating healthy, dorm snack hacks (can't be too healthy), time management, and study tips. My main goal in whatever field I end up in is to help people. The Department of Professional Services helps me do that by allowing me room to be creative by using my skills to the fullest.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Don't be afraid to reach out on LinkedIn to people that work at the company you're applying for. Your connections matter and it's a good way to get info on what they use at their job. Whether it's software, workflows, or the work environment. After reaching out initially and getting feedback, tell them how following their advice turned out! It's a good way to interact with your connections organically (not every day or every month but often enough they don't forget you).

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

I think what helped me most was having an advisor specialized in helping Arts & Humanities majors. When I think of the Career Center, I think of people looking for jobs in economics, front and back end web development, cyber security, and so on. Basically, the STEM majors since UMBC is known as a STEM school. It's easy to fall into the trap of "oh you're a humanities major, you're not gonna have a job when you graduate." Thanks to my advisor I'm already on my way to having 2 years worth of experience before I graduate in the spring next year!

Abstract:

“Animating Bouboulina” uses experimental animation to bring a painting to life, telling the story of Laskarina Bouboulina, a heroine of modern Greek history and commander of her own fleet during the Greek War of Independence (1821). The painting, created by Greek-Australian artist, Effie Chaniotis, was commissioned by Dr. April Householder to be dedicated to the Bouboulina Museum in Spetses, Greece, depicts Bouboulina alongside her descendant and founder of the museum, Philip Demertzis-Bouboulis. It is the first painting of Bouboulina to be created by a female artist, and highlights her humanity and vulnerability in contrast with her idealized reputation, while also honoring the founding of the museum. Working closely with Dr. Householder, I have produced a collection of short animations that tell Bouboulina’s story, bringing to life various symbols featured in the painting that each represent a concept or important event in her life. Using Adobe Photoshop, Premier, and After Effects, I developed experimental methods of converting the original painting into animated motion, mimicking cut-paper animation with digital cutouts and creating sophisticated rigs that combined cutouts and hand-drawn pieces. This work explores the creative potential of the ongoing digitization of art and art history, and challenges the traditional narrative surrounding Bouboulina while simultaneously celebrating her achievements and legacy.

Abstract:

Although an estimated 12 percent of Filipinos living in the U.S. suffer from psychological distress, Filipinos have the lowest reported rates of help-seeking behaviors among all Asian Americans (Martinez et al., 2010; Gong et al., 2003) This research assesses attitudes toward and need for mental health services among the Filipino community living in the U.S., as well as identifies the barriers to help-seeking behaviors that contribute to mental health disparities. Open-ended interviews, averaging one hour in duration, were conducted on Zoom with ten first-generation Filipinos living in the U.S., ranging in age from 22 to 57 years old. Five participants were men and the other five were women. The interviews were transcribed with the aid of a transcription service, removing identifying information, and were analyzed using a coding framework based on key themes identified from previous literature and during the interview process. Comparisons among interview response themes especially focused on the influence of age, gender, and age at immigration on attitudes toward mental health. Interpretations from this research may inform future community interventions to increase mental health service utilization among the Filipino community and support the mental health needs of future generations of Filipino immigrants.

Abstract:

This research centers on simulation of a cluster of migratory cells among nurse cells toward the oocyte in the egg chamber of Drosophila melanogaster in MATLAB. Cell migration is movement of cells responding to chemical gradients acting as signals. It is integral to daily functions like development and healing; also, progress in studies can lead to findings in cancer metastasis. This organism has a well-studied history and many human homologs in genetics. We asked: How to model cell migration through force balances, and what changes to parameters, equations, and geometry are needed? We captured heterogeneous cells of the egg chamber: including nurse, epithelial, and migratory border cells using interactions between cell membranes and arising via forces, including adhesive, repulsive, and spring forces. We used a volume force to include heterogeneously and realistically sized cells. When cells filled the chamber, we enacted the migratory force, which stems from a chemical gradient signaling, allowing border cells to climb through nurse cells. We solved the force balance equation with Euler's step to capture progression in time. In MATLAB, we coded cell boundaries around cell centers to represent membranes while adapting parameters, equations, and coefficients in order to realistically simulate cell migration.

While providing support and care to survivors of sexual violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences.

This interactive virtual gallery contains images and survivor testimony in the form of poems and audio vignettes as a tribute to UMBC’s Take Back the Night. This event invites our campus to come together to speak out and heal together in community. Take Back the Night is a public testimony. It is about making sexual assault and our support for survivors visible and not tucked away behind closed doors.

A community can be a vital tool to help all of us get through life’s ups and downs and celebrate our big and small moments. Community Conversations is an interactive event that will help students understand the role of community in supporting their well-being and mental health. This conversation will also highlight what it means to “show up” for others. This event is in coordination with the Mental Health Community Action Day on April 7th. *NOTE this is not only geared towards survivors, but may be a good outlet for care*
