Intern of the Week: Gabriella Salas for MCS and English!

<Tagline>Check out Gabriella's internship with the Baltimore Witness!</Tagline>

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Spring 2022

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I intern at Baltimore Witness which is a non-profit website that marries journalism and data transparency. My typical day involves attending in-person hearings and trials and reporting on those cases. We cover non-fatal shootings and homicides in Baltimore City. We do this with the hope of delivering transparency about the Baltimore City criminal justice system. Aside from attending hearings and trials, I also interview prosecutors and attorneys, study trends regarding crimes and trials, and I write articles for the website.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I received an email from Rebecca Adelman last semester about this opportunity and sent our Editor-in-Chief, Trina Antoine, my cover letter, resume, and sample writing. I submitted during late December and heard back fairly quickly. I had one interview and was hired on the spot.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have enjoyed the writing process and attending on-going trials. Some of these cases can be very interesting and seeing how the criminal justice system plays differently everyday is fascinating.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I think being able to give the residents of Baltimore a view of what's going on inside the criminal justice system is very eye-opening. Reform can't happen unless we know exactly what's going on.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would say that whether you're interested in journalism like me or interested in learning more about the criminal justice system, to definitely know how to write well, to know a little bit about the criminal justice system in general, and it doesn't hurt to pay attention to on-going trends in the city you're interested in. I think having that background knowledge is very helpful, especially when you're spending all of your time writing about it.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Baltimore Witness has allowed me to see a different side of journalism. It's not driven to make flashy headlines, but rather to report the facts and deliver transparency to its community.

Picturing Pictures: Digitizing the Lewis Hine Collection Prints'... Versos?

By Meredith Power, Special Collections Intern

Digitized materials offer access to research archives for any global audience with an internet connection. The importance of this access has been brought into sharp relief over the last few years of COVID restrictions.

While many people, then, understand the idea of an online database of, say, early 20th century photography documenting child laborers and their working conditions across the United States, the whole process of digitization is often less well-known. Why, for example, would Special Collections want to digitize the versos [the backs] of the five thousand or so prints it holds as part of the Lewis Hine Collection? And what does that digitization involve?

UMBC and the Library of Congress are the only two institutions with a complete (or nearly) set of the photographs that Hine produced for the National Child Labor Commission, an activist group lobbying for the end of child labor. The Library of Congress's prints, though, are mounted, meaning that the backs of the prints cannot be seen. In the case of Hine's work, this is frustrating, as many of the reverse sides (the versos) of his prints include notes about the image or about the process he used to produce the print. As compelling as his subjects themselves were, Hine's literally behind-the-scenes commentary is insightful, often heartbreaking, and occasionally funny. Unlike those in the collection at the Library of Congress, UMBC's prints are not mounted to anything, allowing users full access to the marks and writing on the back of each sheet.

Digitizing a photograph can be tricky work. In addition to the basic need to capture a clear, high-resolution image, the worker (me) must know how to handle fragile old objects like these photographs, printed on sometimes tissue-thin paper. Sometimes, the photographs have become stuck within their Mylar enclosures, and cannot be photographed (this project will also address that issue, to protect the photographs in new, better enclosures). Sometimes, the photographs have become stuck within their Mylar
enclosures, and cannot be photographed (this project will also address
that issue by protecting the photographs in new, better enclosures).
Sometimes, the photographs show their age clearly in the significant
glue residue on the reverse and their missing corners or torn and
    tattered edges.

My copy stand photography work will complement the NEH Preservation Assistance Grant-funded project "Rehousing the Lewis Hine Collection." This project will replace the photographs' existing enclosures (which currently have adhesive migration from the double sided tape used to encapsulate them in Mylar) with new one polyester sleeves and rigid backing boards to provide support, plus new custom fit boxes. Before that portion of the project takes place, though, I am working quickly and carefully to complete as many photographs of versos - backs of prints - as possible each week. My photographs themselves are taken using a copy stand, a special tabletop platform equipped with high-power LED lights that eliminate shadows (see below). A digital camera is mounted with its lens pointing straight down above the platform, and using specialty software and connectors, a worker is able to photograph the back of each print. The information about the print is carefully recorded in a detailed spreadsheet, indicating not just the digital file's name but also any significant issues with the print's condition, the date the photograph was taken, and who took it.

A behind-the-scenes photo of the copy stand workspace, showing the digital camera pointed at the verso (the back) of one of the Hine collection prints.

A closer look at the hand-written note on the verso of P528. This print features Hine's description, handwritten in pencil - "Some of the adults Bibb Mill no. 1 Macon, Ga. Jan 9, 1909." - and his initials.

The front of P528. You can learn more about this print in the Lewis Hine Collection digital collection.

Digitizing these photos is tricky work, demanding close attention not just to the technical processes involved but also in the careful handling of these fragile historic items. The work is rewarding, though. In addition to preserving the information about these images in a stable, secure way, this project will significantly increase scholars' access to Hine's important work of documenting labor conditions in early twentieth-century America.

But learning does not have to end when you graduate; your educational journey could just be getting started.

In fact, lifelong learning can come in a variety of forms, including:

Spring Grove Property Approved as Future Space for UMBC

We are delighted to announce that a proposal by Governor Larry Hogan to transfer the 175-acre Spring Grove Hospital Center property to UMBC was approved today by the Maryland Board of Public Works. The Board also approved a lease between UMBC and the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) to enable the agency's continued operation of the Spring Grove Hospital Center for up to 20 years while MDH implements its facilities master plan for statewide mental health services.

The transfer of the property allows the UMBC community to plan for our future facilities needs concurrent with MDH's continued occupancy. Once MDH has vacated all buildings on the site, the lease will terminate and the property will be available for use by UMBC.

UMBC has talked with public officials and community leaders for decades about our need for future expansion space at Spring Grove. This commitment reflects the appreciation state leaders have for all that our campus has accomplished and will accomplish in the future.

UMBC does not yet have a specific plan for the site. Having clarity about where we can continue to grow allows us to plan wisely for a very bright future. The campus will engage with the State, the County, community leaders, and other partners as part of our regular master facilities planning process. Through this process we will envision a future for the Spring Grove property that supports the university's long-term development while strengthening economic development and quality of life in the Baltimore region and Maryland. This work will begin as we approach our master facilities plan update in 2023.

In the meantime, we can all take pride in this important recognition of the university's momentum.

Thank you for all that you do for UMBC.

President Freeman Hrabowski

FY 2023 Sensitive Equipment Inventory begins July 1, 2022

<Tagline>Sent on Behalf of Inventory Management</Tagline>

The FY 2023 Sensitive Equipment Inventory will begin on July 1, 2022.The Sensitive Equipment Inventory is a University requirement that is conducted every three years by all campus departments. This procedure is necessary to account for the University's sensitive equipment and to identify any weakness in the University's policies and procedures for safeguarding our assets.

The FY 2023 Sensitive Equipment process has many new improvements! The campus is being divided into three groups for taking the inventory. Dividing the campus into smaller groups will enable the Inventory Management department to provide quality assistance to the property custodians should any difficulties arise. Each group will have 90 days to complete their inventory. After 45 days from the cycle's start date, Inventory Management will contact departments that have not completed their inventory to remind them of the requirement and to offer assistance. This reminder will also help prevent departments from procrastinating until the end of the cycle to have the inventory completed.

Inventory Management is also working with the Division of Information Technology to develop a DocuSign process to submit the Sensitive Equipment Inventory by the due dates. This process will enable property custodians to upload the required documentation for lost assets and will provide a workflow from the property custodian to the departmental approver to asset management, making the final steps to completing the inventory more efficient.

We will provide group assignments and potential training dates in a separate email. Please give your department's property custodian your full cooperation in order to make this task a success!

Remember Team Work...Makes the Dream Work!
