Terry Cook Announces Retirement

Colleagues,

After 32 years of distinguished service to the University System of Maryland, Terry Cook, Senior Associate Vice President of Administrative Services, has decided to retire at the end of the 2022 calendar year. Terry came to UMBC in 2008 from the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), where she served as Senior Associate Vice President. Prior to that, Terry spent 15 years at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) in both Facilities Management and Procurement management roles.

Over her 14 years at UMBC, Terry has provided executive oversight and supervision to Facilities Management, Procurement & Strategic Sourcing, Environmental Safety and Health, Management Advisory Services, the Bookstore, and Campus Card/Mail Services. She also provided oversight for our dining services and CEI Arena management contracts and handled all real property matters. She is widely known and respected for her professionalism and integrity, attention to detail, extraordinary work ethic, and strategic thinking skills. Her ability to keep multiple projects on track is unmatched.

Terry’s expertise has also been key to numerous unique and transformative projects, including the transition of the Columbus Center in the Inner Harbor to UMBC’s management, launching the UMBC CEI Arena, facilitating the return of the District Courthouse property to UMBC, and establishing the campus’s first Enterprise Risk Management Initiative. Most recently, Terry played a major role in facilitating the transfer of the 175-acre Spring Grove property to UMBC. Her work partnering with the Office of the Attorney General, the Maryland Department of General Services, and the Maryland Department of Health to ensure the successful transfer of this property was remarkable. Because of Terry’s efforts, UMBC is well positioned for future development at Spring Grove.

Please join me in congratulating Terry for her outstanding career and thanking her for her tireless work for the UMBC community.

A search for an Associate Vice President of Administrative Services will begin immediately.

Kathy L. Dettloff, Vice President for Administration and Finance

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I was a Global Tech Intern within the Front Office Investment Technology Department.

I was given an opportunity to help our business partners by revamping a legacy notification service application by creating a new application while utilizing Flask REST API and React.

There were stories assigned to ultimately finish the project. The assigned stories included creating database schema, designing API, developing API, testing API, etc. Since the project was broken into stories to experience the entire software development cycle, I would work on one story at a time and get approval from the team/manager before continuing onto the next story.

Along with the assigned work, there were events and designed programs for interns to network within the company. The events were specifically designed for interns to gain in-depth insights within different departments and the company. I was able to make connections with other interns and associates that will last forever.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I found the internship opportunity through the career page. The interview process was very smooth. There was one initial phone/behavioral interview with the recruiter and then there was a final interview with two different teams.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

It was a great experience interning at T. Rowe Price. I enjoyed working on the project as I was able to learn new skills every day. I really enjoyed gaining exposure to the software development cycle. It was a very great learning experience.

The culture at T. Rowe Price is great, which made the internship experience even better. Everyone is so nice and always willing to help. I was able to reach out to anyone without any hesitation.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I worked on creating an application that is used by business partners on day-to-day basis. The application helps them with their daily needs. Also, I was able to remove legacy application and consolidate one notification service application.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Do not be afraid to ask for help. Be ready to be challenged.
