PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

A lot of my job is organizing how we run the day-by-day stuff, but it is also making people comfortable with how easy it is to navigate our platforms and art shows. Artists and curators often sit on a high horse, and part of my job is showing potential buyers that it can be cool, easy, and relaxed when interacting with private sellers.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

Networking is your best friend and don't be vain, ask for help. There is always something to learn. Never cut yourself short, there ain't a damn thing you can't do.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Dealing art internationally seems so foreign to many of us. There is often a kind of mystery that shrouds it because of the scandals and large sums of money often involved. We also tend to have a glamorous idea of it due to movies. It can be glamorous but it really is like working for a local art place with more hurdles. We need to make sure the art gets on a plane or ship safely and gets through security and gets to where it is going in one place. I just love the challenges.

Evaluating a Job Offer: What to Consider

Congratulations! You have just reached that most desired
step in the job search progress: an offer! Take some time to celebrate and pat
yourself on the back - you deserve it! But after all the confetti falls, you
may be wondering: What do I do next?

Just like every other stage in the process, successfully evaluating and negotiating a job offer requires preparation, planning, and patience! To get the inside scoop, join Christine Routzahn, Director of the UMBC Career Center for the upcoming virtual Keys to Success: Evaluating Job Offers workshop on Monday, October 10th from 12:00-1:00pm. For more information, click here.

In the meantime, below are some key considerations on how to read the signs when
evaluating job offers to consider the whole package:

Salary: This is often the first thing that we think about related to a job offer, but
accepting the offer is more than just about money! That being said, your
anticipated salary is a very important part of the process, so you will want to
know what you need to make to cover life expenses, what you would like to make
to support long-term goals, and what you can expect to make in a certain
occupation. When all these things are in alignment, you can be sure the offer
    is a good fit.

Location: Where you work is just as important as the type of work you will be doing.
Consider what your typical commute to work would look like and how that impacts
your lifestyle, i.e. will you have to wake up early or get home late as a
    result of a long commute?

    Benefits:
Benefits include everything ranging from health care coverage to retirement
contributions to tuition support for further education. Carefully consider the
benefits - both monetary and non-monetary - when considering a job offer.
Monetary benefits, such as yearly bonuses or stock options, as well as
non-monetary ones like telework flexibility, job title and advancement
potential, and professional development opportunities can make a disappointing
    salary offer more appealing.

    Company
reputation: Securing a position with a desirable institution in your
field can provide a jumpstart to your career that may be worth trade-offs in
other areas. Additionally, a company with a secure and stable employment outlook
can provide priceless piece of mind - and the assurance that you may not have
to repeat this process in the near future!

    Co-workers
and work environment: Lastly, you will want to consider the future
colleagues who you met during the interview process and all that you learned
about the company culture. Who we work with is often as influential as what we
do - so accepting an offer that will position you within a team or environment
that will allow you to bring your whole self to work and provide opportunities
for personal and professional growth can be hard to quantify!

Once you've considered these factors - and others that are
important to you - you may want to start the negotiation process. Even if you plan to
accept the offer, it is perfectly acceptable to ask for time to evaluate the
whole package and make sure it fits your expectations. Be sure to communicate
the timeframe that you require - i.e. 24 hours or until the end of the week,
etc.. - to determine if this also aligns with the employer's time frame to fill
    the position.

If you find that you do want to negotiate some aspect of the
    offer, you may want to:

Show enthusiasm for the position

Clearly communicate your strengths and value to
    the employer

Lean on the facts and reflections gathered at an
earlier stage to present an convincing argument

Embrace flexibility and clearly define your
minimum requirements for acceptance in addition to your ideal goals.

Communicate openly with the employer during the
process and view the negotiation as a partnership. After all, you wouldn't have
gotten to this stage if both you and the employer didn't think it would be a
    good match!

resources to support you in evaluating, negotiating, and responding to job

IPV stems from an abusive partner's need to have control and power over their partner. It is never the survivor's fault that their partner abused them.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

About 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 10 men have experienced sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime and reported some form of IPV-related impact.

Over 43 million women and 38 million men have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

About 11 million women and 5 million men who reported experiencing sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime said that they first experienced these forms of violence before the age of 18.

The CDC describes "intimate partner violence" as any of the following types of violence:

Physical violence is when a person hurts or tries to hurt a partner by hitting, kicking, or using another type of physical force.

Sexual violence is forcing or attempting to force a partner to take part in a sex act, sexual touching, or a non-physical sexual event (e.g., sexting) when the partner does not or cannot consent.

Stalking is a pattern of repeated, unwanted attention and contact by a partner that causes fear or concern for one's own safety or the safety of someone close to the survivor.

Psychological aggression is the use of verbal and non-verbal communication with the intent to harm another person mentally or emotionally and/or to exert control over another person.

If you have experienced or currently experiencing IPV, there is support and resources available to you at UMBC and off-campus.

Getting to know your Academic Advisor

It's time to get advised for the spring semester!

So, what exactly is academic advising like at UMBC?

Academic Advising at UMBC is a shared partnership between students and Academic Advisors. An Academic Advisor's role is to assist you in planning your academic career and move you closer to graduation. Your Academic Advisor is a vital member of your academic support team and someone we recommend you connect with regularly to take full advantage of their support.

You can talk to your Academic Advisor about several topics including:

Your adjustment to college

Major and career choices

Course selection

Long-term academic planning

Academic difficulty

Academic "extras" such as minors, internships, education abroad, etc.

Students with declared majors at UMBC are assigned departmental specific Academic Advisors for support with course selection and degree planning. There also are many students who prefer to explore all their options and/or may transition between programs as they select the best major to meet their academic, personal and career goals. Students who have not declared a major will work with Academic Advisors in the Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising, who are committed to helping students explore degree options and evaluate general education, gateway, and major requirements.

How do you find out who your Academic Advisor is?

Check the "degree" section of your myUMBC profile to see your assigned Academic Advisor under the "Degree Info" heading. If you're still unsure, below is a link to the department contacts for all majors. The person listed as "advising coordinator" or "advising contact" can help you find out who your Academic Advisor is or assign you an Academic Advisor.

Departmental Advising -Main Campus

Departmental Advising -Shady Grove

In preparation for an advising appointment, reviewing your degree card on your myUMBC Profile is helpful. Here you can:

Develop and update your degree plan

Check your degree progress

See how coursework transferred over from your previous institution

Access suggested four-year pathways for completing your degree program

Additionally, you can develop a list of questions/topics to discuss with your Academic Advisor in order to structure your meeting. To help with that conversation, ask yourself:

How am I doing in my major?

Do I need to make any changes or seek academic support next semester?

How long will it take me to complete all my coursework?

Does my academic plan contain all my GEPs, upper-level credits, and writing intensive?

Should I plan to take a winter class?

Are there other topics I'm interested in exploring by adding a minor or certificate program?

Students who are interested in Pre-Professional Allied Health Programs will also work with Academic Advisors in the Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising. In addition to an Academic Advisor in your major department, you may also work with Advisors in other programs including: Pre-Med/Pre-Dental, Pre-Law, Athletics, Academic Success Center, Honors College, other UMBC Scholars Programs, etc.

The Spring 2023 schedule of classes will be available on Monday, October 24th and you should plan to meet with your Academic Advisor before your registration appointment date. You can review the course offerings and discuss them with your Academic Advisor when you meet. You can also check out information on several personalized degree planning tools offered at UMBC. Be ready to discuss any outstanding items or questions you might have from previous advising meetings.

Have any questions?

Contact the Office of Academic & Pre-Professional Advising at oapa@umbc.edu. If you have a quick question, you can also send a DM on Instagram @umbc_advising, schedule an advising appointment with us or visit our office in Sherman Hall, B-wing, rm 224.

Happy advising!
