Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love the idea of training little activists. At QUMBC, we have developed a horizontal structure that emphasizes members developing the skills to implement their own ideas to change the community. Basically, I want QUMBC to drive David Hoffman out of his job.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: The strengths perspective in social work. It is taught in opposition to the problem-centered perspective, which emphasizes clients as problems that need to be solved by social workers. Instead, the strengths perspective wants social workers to acknowledge clients as the experts and masters of their own lives and that social workers are there to advocate for clients and empower them to change their own lives.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Context. Reductionism is my archenemy; I just want to contextualize, historicize, and complicate everything. It makes it difficult to create solutions when your problems are big and ancient instead of mindless beasts to slay, but that's what you have to do if you really want to effect change. You can't just focus on saving the deer when preserving an ecosystem or just hand a patient a prescription when treating them for a chronic problem: you have to situate problems in the greater context and in the systems involved. (And that is when you smash the patriarchal capitalist state.)

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: The professors and staff around you are not just teachers. They are (sometimes) amazing people with great stories and experience and knowledge and you need to tap that like they're maple trees and you have the driest pancakes ever. Talk to them, connect with them!

If nothing else, they may be more lenient with your final grade when you're BFFs.

The Gift

I met my future wife on the fifth of December some years ago. I was sitting with a friend and colleague in the lobby of The Priory, a Pittsburgh hotel. We had flown in from San Diego for a staff meeting. Ten feet away sat an adorable woman about our age, looking a little nervous. We thought she might be Sharon, one of the staff members hired since the last quarterly meeting, but we weren’t sure and, being shy and a little awkward, didn’t ask. Only when somebody who knew all three of us walked into the lobby did we finally meet.

Exactly a year and a day later, I waited anxiously for Sharon at the San Diego airport. We had gotten to know each as we worked together, mainly by phone and email. In the previous couple of weeks, we had acknowledged our feelings for each other across the miles. Now here she was at last, walking into my arms.

I gave her a small gift that day, a sign of hope for the new relationship we were building together. It was a musical Christmas ornament: a little angel. We spoke of it as an anniversary present, commemorating the day we had met. And every year since, I have given Sharon another musical ornament to mark the day.

There are many privileges that come with being alive and free and able to make choices. One of the best is the opportunity to create traditions that help give outward shape to our inward experiences. My relationship with Sharon now lives not just in our daily interactions but in our touchstones and customs, in the special symbols we have created to hold meanings more profound than words alone could ever convey. “Happy anniversary” only scratches the surface, but a happy anniversary it is.
Name: Matthew McNey

Hometown: Columbia

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: This will be my third year, fifth semester at UMBC and still loving every minute of it!

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A:SGA Senator (this will be my third year in this position) and President of College Democrats.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Why 12 Words? Argh... ok: Supportive of change, loyal student advocate (not actually a Student Advocate) and political pragmatist.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: In the past the SGA was in a role, not dissimilar from High School, positions were important and we were the loyal opposition to the administration. It has been a good transition from a competitive atmosphere when I entered SGA to a more equitable atmosphere and the organization becoming a shareholder in making decisions with the administration. I guess, the best aspect with my role would have to be participating in this change and continuing these philosophical discussions about where the campus should continue going, its always given me a certain feeling of place and purpose. I do hope to leave a meaningful impact on UMBC before I leave and in some big way.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: Focusing on what the problem actually is to find solutions, not the other way around.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Speaking Truth to Power.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: I should say the SGA office, because I'm always there! Get involved! Otherwise College is boring, especially at UMBC where everyone takes studying way to seriously (me included), but there is never anything to do you just have to look, ask and investigate!

Researcher of the Week: Dora Korewa

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

ABSTRACT:
This research will examine the “guido” and “mobster” stereotypes, the
prevalent representations of Italians in American media. I will first
examine the stereotypes themselves – their media histories and the
academic work pertaining to them. Then I will conduct a specific
content analysis of these stereotypes in two cultural phenomena: The Sopranos, an HBO series featuring prominently the “mobster” stereotype, and Jersey Shore,
an MTV reality show relying heavily upon the “guido” stereotype. After
examining these shows from a traditional media studies lens, I will
examine the response they elicit from the people whom they affect the
most. I will conduct study groups with both Italian Americans in the
U.S. and Italians in Italy after showing a brief series representative
clips of each of the shows to the participants. These focus groups will
offer a base level of understanding of the ways these stereotypes are
received by the people they are associated with on an increasingly
global level. I am particularly interested in the difference between
the Italian and Italian American responses because these shows, which
are originally American, have been released in Italy without the
cultural context that makes these stereotypes recognizable. I wonder
how Italians without the understanding of these stereotypes as
culturally accepted respond to media representations that seem so
foreign, and yet are associated, both by word and image, with a country
and population from which the stereotypical individuals featured are
    so far removed.

For more information about Undergraduate research & Dora's propsal, check out the website!
