Exam Stories

In the fall of my junior year in college, I got stuck with a final exam in the very last possible time block, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on a Friday. The test--on industrial organization theory--was more conceptually difficult than it was time-consuming, and after a little less than two hours I had completed what I considered to be a first draft. That left a little more than an hour to review my answers, look for weaknesses and correct errors.

I took a minute to relax and stretch. There were windows high on the left wall of the room, and from my desk I could see that the sky had gone completely dark. I imagined myself walking out of the room into that evening, with weeks of vacation ahead, and a reunion with my high school friends planned for that very night. But I banished the thought, because there was still an hour's worth of work to do: time to polish the rough text I had thrown onto the pages of my bluebook.

That was when the chimes began. UCLA has a speaker system that occasionally broadcasts the melodic sounds of a carillon from the library building's bell tower. No doubt it wasn't supposed to start playing during a final exam period, but there it was, impossible to ignore. The tune it was playing, gently and insistently (and quite loudly), was "Silent Night." BONG bong bong BONG. (I put down my pen). BONG bong bong BONG. (I started to think about how nice it would be when the stress of finals left my body, as soon as I turned in my exam and walked out the door). BONG BONG bong. BONG BONG bong.

It probably took 45 seconds before my will to resist was completely destroyed, and I turned in my exam and wandered happily into the December night.

Good luck on all of your exams and papers. The welcoming December nights await you too, after this last push. And luckily for you, UMBC doesn't have a carillon attached to a loudspeaker system (at least, as far as you know).

For your amusement, here are some links to a few of my other exam stories--

Reseacher of the Week: Neeti Goel

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

ABSTRACT: The threat of bacterial pathogens, such as the anthrax-causing Bacillus anthracis,
as biological weapons has made it more urgent to understand the
mechanism and properties of bacterial endospores. In harsh conditions
the bacterium transforms into endospores which can remain dormant for
many years and then germinate in favorable conditions, such as a human
host. A detailed understanding of certain spore characteristics can help
improve the methodology and instruments used by first responders in a
biohazard emergency to ensure rapid, accurate, and non-invasive
detection. This study attempts to use the characteristic of intrinsic
fluorescence to differentiate molecular species by their unique spectra.
The effects of certain germinant nutrients and temperature on the
growth and germination of the Bacillus spores were also characterized. A
comparative analysis was done of the spectra of different strains of
Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus cereus (both simulants for Bacillus
anthracis) grown in three different growth media. After several
calibration curves of Dipicolinic acid (DPA) and DPA complexes were
created, the samples were scanned for these endogenous fluorescent
molecules. Measurements of the concentration of the fluorescent DPA
complexes were used to follow the germination of the spores.

Hometown: Burtonsville, MD

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: A little over three years.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A:Currently just a member of a few different orgs; previously a First Year Ambassador and Senator in the SGA.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Elusive creature that lurks the halls of PuP.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: Being a student. I finally began to savor my undergraduate experience after my sophomore year, in which I pulled a 180 by making a drastic change of major. Since then, I have been able to understand what it means to truly love academia. By switching my field to one that actually fascinates me, I have come to enjoy the simplest of school related things, such as attending classes and being in the presence of my professors and classmates.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: Don’t be afraid of changing the entire direction of your life in order to reach your fullest potential. If you genuinely believe that there is another pathway out there that will give you greater fulfillment, pursue it. The short-term ramifications resulting from your decision may seem insurmountable, but the true value of such a change will be seen in due time.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: 30 Rock. Love the witty jokes and ridiculous situations that the characters find themselves in. It’s like a celebration of absurdity, awkwardness, and nerdyness… what more could you want?!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: As an incoming freshman, I remember coming across discussions on Facebook in which new students defended their decision to choose UMBC over other more prestigious universities. It was as if coming to UMBC required a really good explanation... as if “u must be crazy” to have enrolled here. Now that I’m nearing the end of my time here, I’ve realized how baseless this notion is. I’ve developed a great deal of respect for my professors and have met students who will one day be the movers and shakers of tomorrow. I’ve been able to build a strong foundation for my future academic and professional pursuits and have enjoyed the process of doing so... I guess those who reject a school, idea, or concept just have yet to gain from the very thing they’ve dismissed.
