Student Org Spotlight : UMBC HLSU
We are an organization that welcomes anyone interested in the culture, food, language, etc. You do not have to be Hispanic in order to be a member of this club. Our goal is to ultimately create a family within our club between our general body members and our executive board. During our general body meetings we participate in activities where we can interact with one another and range from sharing our cultures, telling stories, getting to know each other better through fun games and staying up to date on current events that can impact the Hispanic community. Under normal circumstances, our club holds two main events: El Encuentro and La Reunion. El Encuentro is a formal event held in the fall in the UC Ballroom and there is a live performance, a DJ, food and dancing. La Reunion is a casual event held in the spring on Commons Terrace which has a DJ and appetizers. HLSU is a great space to feel welcomed, create strong friendships and have fun!

What makes us different is that we want to carve out a space for those who need belonging and family at UMBC, and we are willing to acknowledge when we as an org or a Board are not meeting that goal or our community's needs. UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. It is a worldwide nonprofit service organization that provides aid and relief to children and families who need it most. They are one of the first organizations to serve people in need when a disaster/crisis strikes. As a club, we advocate for children's rights and needs, as well as raise funds to help UNICEF send food, water, clothing, vaccines, school supplies, and other life essentials to communities in need.
