BreakingGround Applications Still Open

<Tagline>Low lift application! Apply soon!</Tagline>

The BreakingGround grant program still has funds to distribute between now and June 30! The BreakingGround initiative awards grants of up to $2,500.00 to UMBC faculty, staff, and students to implement educational and community-building courses and programs that foster civic agency: the capacity to initiate and make meaningful contributions to social change.

The options for using these funds are flexible, but some ideas include: experiential learning opportunities for students; student and community-engaged research projects; time to design deep transformations of existing curricula to be oriented toward civic agency; and resources for engagement with social changemakers and local communities. For a list of previous awardees, see here.

For more information and to apply, visit our website at this link. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, and when you apply, we will contact you within two weeks of submission. However, we strongly encourage you to submit before May 15.

The application is relatively short, with the main criteria being that the submissions should be clear about (a) how the proposed use of funds will contribute to enhanced civic knowledge and engagement for UMBC community members and (b) which administrative unit will hold the funds for the project. If you have any questions, please contact us at civiclife@umbc.edu.

Meet the Facilitator 2024: Rein Claro

<Tagline>Facilitator of "New Angles to New Solutions"</Tagline>

About the Facilitator:

Rein Claro (He/Him/His) is a Business Technology Administration major at UMBC. Outside of UMBC, he enjoys playing video games with friends, professionally commits to photography and videography along with post edits for said work, and likes to build computers. Rein believes that effective leaders aren't solely defined by unwavering determination and rigid plans. Instead, they should embody adaptability and creativity in response to dynamic environments, enabling them to achieve desired outcomes or uncover new possibilities through alternative strategies. As a Leadership Peer Facilitator, Rein plans to encourage people to broaden their perspective and enhance their creative capacities, thereby refining their approach to leadership.

About the Leadershop:
How many times have you made a plan? And it resulted in unwanted outcomes? Using design-thinking tools, you will have a chance to think your way around the problem and look for a new angle.

What does Leadership mean to you:

Leadership means taking that step forward, taking that responsibility and initiative that people can learn and respect. Being a leader means being able to guide yet also have the ability to learn. Leadership is not an innate trait but rather a quality that is cultivated and developed over time.

Ice-Breaker: What is a movie quote that you live by?

“You have such a capacity for goodness. You always excelled, but not because you craved success but because of your fear of failure”. This quote is powerful to me because growing up I didn’t think I possessed any traits of competence no matter what I did, which enabled me to constantly aim for improved outcomes. My pursuit of improvement did not stem from a potential room for improvement, but rather from a personal perception of falling short, which was detrimental to my self esteem and approach to fulfilling my obligations.

The Leadershops series consists of 1 hour workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and Leadership Peer Facilitators. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.
