CALL FOR PAPERS
The program in Women’s and Gender Studies at Morgan State University invites papers on themes related to the intersection of masculinities with sexuality, race, gender, and ethnicity. The fluidity of gender and sexual identity is a critical point of consideration in academic and cultural venues; however, it is even more critical when considered within the context of communities of color. Broadening our definitions and conversations on this fluidity, especially as it relates to Black masculine identities and sexuality, is a primary aim of this year’s Intersections Symposium. The Symposium seeks to engage overlapping and intersecting notions and presentations of masculinities in the contexts of identity politics, social change and queer identities as they disrupt the normative and oppressive status quo.
We invite submissions in a variety of academic disciplines that address the intersections of sexuality, gender, race, and ethnicity. We encourage panel submissions of 4 presenters as well as individual submissions in the following areas:
· Trans Issues
· Female Masculinities
· Communities of Color
· Global Contexts
· Queer Theory
Submission guidelines: Send 250 word abstract for individual papers and panels in Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, Rich Text format, and include the following:
a. A cover page with author’s name, title of submission, institutional affiliation, contact information (email, phone number and mailing address)
b. Area of submission

The term "American Indian" incorporates hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages. Starting in 1976 as Native American Awareness Week, the period was expanded by Congress and approved by President George H. W. Bush in August 1990 by designating the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. In his proclamation for 1996, President William J. Clinton noted, "Throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all odds, America's first peoples have endured, and they remain a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence." Second Generation Scholarship Form
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Second Generation Scholarship Award is to provide support to outstanding UMBC undergraduates who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of minorities. The amount of the scholarship varies from year to year.
For the 2014-2015 academic year, two $1,000 scholarship will be given. The recipients will be notified in early November and the awards will be formally presented at the W.E.B. Dubois Lecture on November 12, 2014. Attendance at the lecture is mandatory.
Criteria
The student selected to receive this award should:
- Be a full-time, undergraduate, degree-seeking student in good standing at UMBC.
- Have a minimum 2.75 GPA.
- Submit two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a UMBC faculty from whom the applicant has taken a course.
- Have completed or enrolled in an Africana Studies Course.
- Submit a transcript (unofficial transcripts are accepted).
- Demonstrate a commitment to the advancement of minorities that is reflected by a pattern of service to the community, extracurricular activities, or other community involvement.

National Hispanic Heritage Month:
September 15-October 15, 2015
Starting in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week and incorporating September 15 and 16, the independence days for Central American nations and Mexico, respectively, the period was expanded in 1988 to National Hispanic Heritage Month. Each year the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers and the Hispanic Foundation select a theme for the month and commission a poster to reflect that theme.
