Join the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) University Health Services and the Counseling Center!
The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) acts as a student voice to the staff and administration of University Health Services (UHS) and the Counseling Center (CC). SHAC is an advisory board of students who function as liaisons between UMBC students and UHS and CC staff to help improve health and mental health at UMBC and provide students with the best experience possible at the CC and UHS. Aside from their advisory duties, SHAC members get involved in some outreach events and programming efforts sponsored by the offices. SHAC usually meets once a month during the academic year.
Join SHAC today! You’ll be providing a service to the UMBC community while building your leadership skills.

The Crisis in Black Education
Executive Summary 2017
The theme for 2017 focuses on the crucial role of education in the history of African Americans.
ASALH’s founder Carter G. Woodson once wrote that “if you teach the Negro that he has
accomplished as much good as any other race he will aspire to equality and justice without
regard to race.” Woodson understood well the implications associated with the denial of access
to knowledge, and he called attention to the crisis that resulted from persistently imposed racial
barriers to equal education. The crisis in black education first began in the days of slavery when
it was unlawful for slaves to learn to read and write. In pre-Civil War northern cities, free blacks
were forced as children to walk long distances past white schools on their way to the one school
relegated solely to them. Whether by laws, policies, or practices, racially separated schools
remained the norm in America from the late nineteenth century well into our own time.
Throughout the last quarter of the twentieth century and continuing today, the crisis in black
education has grown significantly in urban neighborhoods where public schools lack resources,
endure overcrowding, exhibit a racial achievement gap, and confront policies that fail to deliver
substantive opportunities. The touted benefits of education remain elusive to many blacks of all
ages. Tragically, some poorly performing schools serve as pipelines to prison for youths.
Yet, African American history is rich in centuries-old efforts of resistance to this crisis: the
slaves’ surreptitious endeavors to learn; the rise of black colleges and universities after the Civil
War; unrelenting battles in the courts; the black history movement; the freedom schools of the
1960s; and local community-based academic and mentorship programs that inspire a love of
learning and thirst for achievement. Addressing the crisis in black education should be considered one of the most important goals in America’s past, present, and future.
Welcome to a new semester UMBC! Spring hours for Student Life's Mosaic Center begin the week of Jan. 30 and run through the end of exam week in May.
Our Spring Hours are: Monday - Tuesday: 10am-7pm; Wednesday-Friday: 10am-5pm
We're located on the 2nd floor of the Commons building, midway down the hall between the gameroom and upper Flat Tuesdays pub in room 2B23.
The Mosaic lounge space is available to all students, staff, faculty and their visitors on a "first come, first seated" basis. Free coffee, tea, and occasional snacks are available as well!

Interracial Black/White Family Research Project
Parents of Children 13-17 Needed for Psych Doctoral Research
Great opportunity to participate in a timely research study!

My name is Lindsay Emery and I am a doctoral student in psychology here at UMBC.
I am currently recruiting interracial Black/White family members for my dissertation and I was wondering if I could perhaps ask for help to spread the word to students, staff and faculty at UMBC, particularly who are part of an interracial Black/White family in the area.
My dissertation is looking at how Black/White interracial families communicate together (parents and their biological children) on topics of race and identity. This project will involve me interviewing parents and their children (child has to be between the ages 13-17) who are part of a Black/White interracial family and live in the Baltimore area, to discuss the topic of race and identity. Families will participate in a total of 3 interviews (1-2 hours each) with me (1 parent interview, 1 child interview, and 1 family group interview) and will receive $60 cash compensation in total for their time and participation.
Interested families should email me or call me if interested. All contact information for this project is included on the following two attached fliers (parent and child versions).
Again, to participate, participants must: 1.) be a parent in a Black/White interracial relationship and have a biological child (between the ages of 13-17) that can participate as well, who all live together, and 2.) live in the Baltimore area.

UMBC SGA's Senate & Finance Board have vacancies for the Spring 2017 semester!
We are currently seeking motivated students interested in working on initiatives with the UMBC campus to make positive change.
Senate meets every Monday evening at 5:30pm, meetings are held in Commons 318. You will be required to stay for the duration of the meeting, which have no end time and have been know to run as late as 11:00pm. In addition to attending meetings, Senators are required to be a member of at least two Shared Governance Committees on campus that meet at various times, and work on initiatives around campus.
Finance Board meets every Tuesday evening at 5:30pm, also in Commons 318. The Finance Board has openings for both Finance Board Members and First Year Ambassadors. All members of the board are expected to attend the meetings in their entirety, which have been know to run past 11:00pm at times.

honors the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. with regional marching
bands, color guards, steppers, equestrian units, dance squads, civic
organizations, and floats. The parade steps off at Martin Luther King Jr.
Boulevard and Eutaw Street, continuing south on Martin Luther King Jr.
