Black and Gold Rush with i3b Help us continue to co-create a more socially just future
Over the next 36 hours the UMBC community is coming together for our annual Giving Day. This is a community-wide effort where we contribute to initiatives, departments, programs and so much more to support the amazing things happening on our campus.
 
Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) is a new department on campus, but is composed of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice work that has been happening on UMBC’s campus for over 20 years. i3b helps students, staff, faculty & alumni develop the knowledge, awareness and skills necessary to cultivate an inclusive campus community, while creating spaces for students to get connected and find belonging. You may be most familiar with our three cultural centers – The Mosaic, Interfaith and Pride Centers, where students are able to find a home away from home as connected to these important identities. Along with our identity-based student focused programming, we have expanded our work to include the Interact Dialogues Program, OCA Mocha Mondays: Diversity Dialogues with i3b, and Workshop Wednesdays series.

On February 25th, at 12:00pm-1:00pm, George Derek Musgrove, associate professor of history, will present and discuss the conception and design of Black Power in DC, an innovative and interactive approach to presenting history. He will be joined by Anne Sarah Rubin, professor of history, and Lee Boot, director of the Imaging Research Center, to discuss the project’s creation and its relationship to the digital humanities landscape. A question and answer session with the audience will follow.

Musgrove launched Black Power in DC, an online ”StoryMap” created in collaboration with the Imaging Research Center (IRC), in February 2021. His goal was to represent the evolution of this influential social movement over space and time through interactive geographic maps, historical photographs and text. The project builds from his book, Chocolate City: A History of Race and Democracy in the Nation’s Capital, co-authored with Chris Myers Asch and published in 2017. UMBC faculty, staff, and students have been active participants in Imagining America, a consortium of artists, scholars, organizers, and humanists envisioning and enacting a more just and liberatory America and world. Imagining America’s Leading and Learning Initiative is a three year action research project concerned with expanding the ways in which academic institutions understand, value, and support public, engaged, and activist scholarship. The LLI invites campus and community partners to apply to submit case studies of their work to the Stories of Change multimedia documentary project, in the following categories:


(1) Expanding Understandings of Knowledge Production

(2) Catalyzing Institutional Change

(3) Demonstrating the Power of Public, Engaged, and Activist Arts, Design, and Humanities
