Thursday, October 7, 2021 · 5 PM - 7 PM Dinner with Friends will feature engaging, facilitated small-group conversations over dinner that will connect you with other members of the UMBC community. You will spend the evening sharing stories, learning about each other's experiences with important issues affecting UMBC students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and discussing how we can move forward together.
An RSVP is required as spots in these popular virtual conversations are limited. Choose to join a facilitated small-group conversation about one of the following discussion topics:
Building community during and after the pandemic
Supporting mental health in challenging times
Promoting civic agency and engagement between elections
Fostering equity and inclusion

Invitation for Student Sustainability Writers
The Sustainable Age is a student journal seeking authors
The Sustainable Age is a student journal founded by students of the North Texas Regional Center of Expertise Network. The journal is seeking volunteer student writers to submit original articles centered on the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
This project is led by students for students. It is focused on educating and raising awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This student-led journal provides an environment for students from different universities across the world to develop academic research concerning different areas like Social Justice, Human Health and Well-being, Philosophy, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, Climate Action, and Business.
Writers can learn introductory level scholarly and peer-reviewed writing methods, supported by an editorial team of volunteer students, faculty, and staff. Every article published in the online journal is related to at least one SDG, is reviewed by at least one person of the editorial review team, and includes at least one cited reference using MLA format. Postdoctoral research position in cancer biology at JHU
The Maynard Lab at Johns Hopkins seeks postdoc students
The Maynard Lab is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to collaborate on current funded projects. Our research involves the investigation of immunobiological factors that contribute to cancer health disparities in racial/ethnic minorities and underserved populations. We also investigate the role of inflammation-associated P2 purinergic receptors in cancer initiation and aggressiveness . Specifically, projects are aimed at therapeutically targeting P2 purinergic receptors for the treatment of aggressive prostate cancer and characterizing P2 purinergic receptors in pancreatic cancer.

Begins Sept 21st with the The LeadHERship Problem
The Leadershops series consists of workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and student leaders. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.
The following are the fall 2021 Leadershops sessions that are being offered for students to register through myUMBC:
This session is about taking a deeper look into the relationship between womxn and leadership. Attendees will learn about how our socialization affects our views regarding our own identity and our capacity to lead. This session will be done online.
The Author of Your Leadership Story is a leadership workshop that focuses on self-authorship; defining and creating you own individual sense of self, and making yourself as you go on your college journey. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.
Attendees will learn about the leadership process through team-building and capitalizing on difference. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.

oei.umbc.eduWe recognize that the return to in-person classes and on-campus activities, while navigating Covid compliance, has been difficult. We are excited to welcome students into our new Center for Well-Being (CWB), which was developed to support students' physical, mental and spiritual well-being. But, we also recognize that the transition from the former shared interfaith space to the new shared Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being has been challenging. We appreciate the work of students and student organizations who have advocated to ensure that students' concerns regarding the hours and access are being heard.
As a result of ongoing conversations with students about their needs, we can share the following updates regarding access to the Gathering Space:
Gathering Space Reservations:
Reservations for use of the Gathering Space are officially open. Religion and Belief organizations can reserve the space using 25Live. Reservations are approved by i3b and are prioritized for Religion and Beliefs organizations. Please note that the number of people who can use the space at any given time is currently limited by COVID requirements.
Gathering Space Hours:The Gathering Space is now open 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. daily. Due to safety considerations, students are not able to use the space outside of staffed hours.
Our Next Steps:
We recognize that our students need safe, comfortable, and convenient spaces to gather and to pray. We also know that there is high demand for Religion and Belief students to use the Gathering Space. While we do not yet know what the ideal long-term solution is, we are working with impacted students to help them meet their spiritual needs. Our current work includes:
1. For instances where the Gathering Space is reserved and unavailable, we have identified other campus spaces for students. This includes two spaces on the first floor of the CWB including:
- The Mind Spa; and
- The shared spiritual advising office.
We also have spaces available including:
- The Mosaic Center (Commons 2B23)
- The Women’s Center (Commons 004).
- The Pride Center (UC 201D), and
We plan to share additional information about access to each space soon.
2. At the request of our students, the Division of Student Affairs has committed to making training available for their staff on inclusion of diverse religious communities and religious practices.
3. We know that the work is not yet done. We pledge to continue to work with students and community members to identify issues and to actively work toward solutions.
