FDC event: Confronting Racism in the Margins

<Tagline>Writing Across the Disciplines CIRTL certification</Tagline>

The text highlights the prevalence of implicit racism in instructors’ feedback on students’ writing assignments across the disciplines. During our session together, we’ll grapple with ideas for taking antiracist action at UMBC to support our faculty in “advocating for writerly agency” of students. In turn, we will work toward our institution’s commitment to inclusive excellence. All teaching faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. As the reading notes, “racism in the margins” demands action within writing-intensive courses across the disciplines and is not restricted to Writing Centers or general composition-courses. Registrants may also wish to scan a few resources highlighted within the reading:

A Racial Microaggressions Survey

The Conversations from the Margins video

REGISTER HERE

Please email fdc@umbc.edu if you have any questions. Campus Life and Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging’s (i3b) Mosaic are bringing back our Multicultural Leadership Cohort Experience (MLCE) which will start its second cohort in a few weeks! The purpose of the MLE initiative is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify within marginalized backgrounds, particularly in relation to race, ethnicity, and nationality to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, strengths, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. Unlike the mini-series held in the fall, the spring cohort experience is offered SOLELY for selected applicants (up to 18 undergraduate and graduate students). All locations for meeting dates and times will be announced via email to selected participants and invited through Google Calendar.

This spring, we will be exploring the concept of Deconstructing Grit and Greatness. We will do this in a leadership learning cohort by:

Enhancing participants' leader identity and leadership capacity using an identity-conscious lens and student development theories;

Increasing participants’ awareness of their personal abilities, identity development, and intersections that shape their story through authenticity, self-reflection, and cultural humility;

Exploring the role they play in developing relationships while building intra/intercultural connections;

And capitalizing on their unique differences, specifically in relation to their racial, ethnic, national, and other salient identity social groups

The first session will cover a brief overview of the program. However, please note that all session details will be only disclosed to the cohort.
