Center for Democracy & Civic Life Affiliate Positions [paid] Applications for 2022-23 due April 4, 2022

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life is seeking undergraduate students to play leading roles in its 2022-23 programs as affiliates of the Center. Affiliates include Alternative Spring Break leaders (up to six positions), ConnectionCorps facilitators (up to eight positions), and STRiVE coaches (five positions).

Applications for all three positions are due by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2022. Apply here.

Alternative Spring Break leaders

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a six-day immersive learning experience. ASB participants explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore. Each small group focuses on a specific topic, but the groups also consider overlaps among their issues. ASB groups work with community partners, elected officials, and scholars to identify pathways to long-term local engagement. Past ASB groups have explored challenges and solutions relating to housing, access to nutritious food, education, and health care, criminal justice, and a variety of other issues in Baltimore. Applicants can choose to explore these topics or propose new ones.

Each leader works with a co-leader and as a member of a leadership team organized and trained by Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff during weekly meetings in the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. Together the leaders develop plans for a holistic, empowering ASB experience for all participants during the week of UMBC’s Spring Break, March 19 - 24, 2023. 

The overall time commitment is approximately 100 hours over the course of the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. For specific dates, see the application. 

Leaders receive a $1,000 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 096-08) on their transcripts for winter and spring 2023. Leaders also receive a graduation cord to recognize the contributions they have made to the education and growth of their peers. The Shriver Center coordinates PRAC 096-08 and the distribution of graduation cords.

All undergraduate students are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in ASB or a similar multi-day experiential learning program. 

ConnectionCorps facilitators

The ConnectionCorps is an initiative through which UMBC students learn to foster democratic participation and authentic connection among participants in the Center for Democracy and Civic Life’s workshops and programs (e.g., Change Makers Dinner, Changing Maryland, and Dinner with Friends). ConnectionCorps facilitators participate in bi-weekly and ad-hoc training sessions to build community, develop skills, and prepare to facilitate.  

The overall time commitment is approximately 30 hours in each of the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. For specific dates, see the application.

ConnectionCorps facilitators receive a $400 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 096-08) on their transcripts for spring 2022. They also receive a graduation cord to recognize the contributions they have made to the education and growth of their peers. The Shriver Center coordinates PRAC 096-08 and the distribution of graduation cords.

All undergraduate students are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in Center for Democracy and Civic Life workshops or programs. 

STRiVE coaches

STRiVE is an intensive, five-day leadership for social impact program organized in partnership with the Student Government Association. The STRiVE coaching team prepares for and facilitates STRiVE, which will take place January 9-13, 2023. STRiVE coaches meet weekly during the fall 2022 semester to practice sessions and make plans. Coaches also prepare to facilitate small and large group sessions. By the time of the retreat, all coaches have received all the training and practice needed to succeed as a STRiVE coach.

The overall time commitment is approximately 100 hours over the course of fall 2022 semester and winter 2023 term. For specific dates, see the application.

STRiVE coaches receive a $1,000 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 096-08) on their transcript for winter 2023. They also receive a graduation cord to recognize the contributions they have made to the education and growth of their peers. We are working on creating a series of student videos, featuring undergraduate and graduate students, to support Retriever Integrated Health's (RIH) Reach Out Retrievers initiative. Reach Out Retrievers is the first step (hopefully with many more steps to follow) in making a campus commitment to supporting and improving the mental health of our entire campus community. These pieces will be shared during the month of April on RIH and other campus partner social media pages. Additionally, these videos will  be paired with information about online mental health tools that students can take advantage of right now. 

There are three ways to participate: 
  • Send a video 
  • Send an audio recording
  • Provide a written submission
In the submission, we would like for students to use the following questions to guide their thoughts:
  • How has your mental health changed since you started at UMBC?
    • If needed, what did you do to handle those changes?
  • What do you wish you would have done differently to support your mental? OR What are you happy that you have done to support your mental health?
  • What would you say to others with your same mental health experience?
If submitting a video or audio recording, here are some things to consider:
  • Videos and audio recordings should be between 30 and 60 seconds
  • Students are welcome to use their phone to record  (preferably with the front-facing camera) 
  • Students are welcome to share their name, graduation year, and  major in the recording. 
    • If a student does not feel comfortable sharing this information, they do not have to include it in the recording
  • The videos don't need to be very polished
If providing a written submission, please students can include their name, graduation year, and  major. 
  • If a student does not feel comfortable sharing this information, they do not have to include it in the submission (the submission will be shared as quotes)

We are excited to share a valuable career and professional development opportunity. This event will showcase the biomedical research of exceptional scholars, including:•Late-stage doctoral students who are less than two years from completing their Ph.D. program• Early-stage postdoctoral scholars who are no more than two years post-degree.

The Event Selected scholars will be invited to:
•Present research in an oral format.
•Network with other students, post doctoral fellows and faculty.
•Attend a reception to celebrate diversity and science.
•Participate in a professional development session.
•Tour laboratories and core facilities.
•Meet with faculty to learn about available post doctoral opportunities at our Institute.

Diversity Initiative

Scholars from groups underrepresented in the sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.

Through our online application portal, Rising Stars Symposium candidates will:

-Complete the online application that includes a brief diversity statement
-Submit a CV
-Provide the contact information of the principal investigator, research advisor or mentor who can serve as a reference

Selections : Selected scholars will be notified by March 8, 2022, and will have a week to confirm participation.

Eligibility: Late-stage doctoral students who are less than two years from completing Ph.D. program and early-stage postdoctoral researchers who are no more than two years post-degree in the biomedical sciences. Priority will be given to underrepresented groups as outlined by the NIH.

Reflecting Retrievers: Graduate Student Support Group is a semester-long group geared towards students in masters’ and doctoral programs. This group is designed to provide a safe and confidential environment for graduate students to discuss the stress and challenges they’re facing being in grad school. Members will also have space to find support related to personal difficulties they may be experiencing. We hope that the group cultivates deep and meaningful conversations and contributes to group members’ emotional wellbeing.


Students must be located in the state of MD during group time. To join, students should call RIH at 410-455-2542 to complete a triage and a pre-group screening appointment.

Students of Color Process Group

Tuesdays, 1-2:30pm
Students of Color Process Group is a semester-long group for Spring 2022. It is specifically designed to provide students (undergraduate and graduate) who identify as students of color with a safe and confidential space to obtain emotional support, find a sense of connection, and learn from others' experiences. We will also discuss stressors and challenges related to navigating social, academic, and work spaces in the face of systemic oppression and racism. The ultimate goal is for members to gain greater self-knowledge, improve their self-esteem, and develop more meaningful relationships.

Students must be located in the state of MD during group time. To join, students should call RIH at 410-455-2542 to complete a triage and a pre-group screening appointment.

Day & Time: Tuesday, 1PM-2:30PM (Starting March 1st)

We are giving 15 copies of bell hooks' novel,  All About Love: New Visions! Look below for details! 

In her novel, All about Love: New Visions, social activist and feminist author, bell hooks discusses what it means to love, both as an individual and within the broader context of family and community living. hooks' discusses how one's environment shapes their understanding of love and offers profound insight on the bounds of self-love and how it can work to heal a person. 

This past week was All About Love week at the center and we celebrated by posting 5 short video clips to our social media feeds. Each clip included a text vignette graphic as well as an audio reading by one of the Women's Center staff members. 

Special Thank You to our Co-Sponsors the Media and Communication Studies Department. This giveaway is open to BOTH graduate and undergraduate students. Please respond to this google form with your UMBC information. On the second page of this form you will be asked to select ONE of five vignettes and write at least five sentences of how it resonates with you.
