This is a friendly reminder that the Student Fee Advisory Committee is holding a Fee Forum for all students tomorrow at noon. It will take place in the first floor lecture hall in the Admin building. 

While we are not changing our fee, it is important that all students know about where their money is going. I will share a short presentation that talks about us and what we do to support graduate students.

Position Description:

Senator:

  • Attend weekly Senate meetings and abide by the approved attendance policy (Note: You must attend weekly meetings. Senate meetings are weekly on Mondays at 5:30 p.m until the meeting’s conclusion)

  • Actively make an effort to participate in and promote all SGA-affiliated initiatives and events
  • Promote and support UMBC undergraduate students by actively working with them and other campus partners to co-create programs, services, and relationships to improve the UMBC community. This includes completing initiative(s) related to the campus community either individually or in partnership with others
  • Communicate with members of the Executive Branch and encourage collaboration whenever possible
  • Meet regularly with various UMBC community members (faculty, staff, administrators, and other students) to effectively represent the interests of the student body
  • Attend all mandatory trainings and in-services
  • Serve on university shared governance committees
  • Fulfill all other responsibilities assigned to Senators in SGA’s Guiding Documents 
  • Complete End of term report by May 1, 2023
  • Submit weekly progress reports to the SGA Stipend Review Committee

This semester’s Dinner with Friends program is special because for the first time in three years, we will actually provide a catered dinner for the participants (the programs since 2020 have taken place virtually). You will spend the evening enjoying good food, sharing stories, learning about each other's experiences, and discussing how we can move forward together.

504 and Beyond: Disability Politics and the Black Panther Party

Sami Schalk, Associate Professor, Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Drawing from the book, Black Disability Politics, this talk will detail the Black Panther Party’s involvement in the 1977 504 Sit-in, in which protesters around the country picketed and occupied government offices to urge passage of delayed regulations related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Schalk will discuss the sit-in as an historical example of how Black cultural workers have engaged with disability as a political issue in ways that have sometimes been obscured in Black studies and disability studies alike.

Biography: Dr. Sami Schalk (she/her) is an associate professor of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction (Duke 2018) and Black Disability Politics (Duke 2022). Dr. Schalk’s academic work focuses on race, disability, and gender in contemporary American literature and culture. She also writes for mainstream outlets, including a monthly column called “Pleasure Practices” in TONE Madison. Dr. Schalk identifies as a fat, Black, queer, disabled femme and a pleasure activist.

This lecture is organized by the Dresher Center for the Humanities.
