About the presenter

Maame Araba Brookman(she/her/hers) is a senior Biology major on the Pre- med track at UMBC. Outside of UMBC, she enjoys listening to music and watching tv shows. Maame Araba believes that leadership is about allowing people to have a personable and free environment to share ideas and collaboration, as well as also making decisions for the benefit of a group of peers. Her goals as a Leadership peer facilitator is to allow students to be equipped with the skills to have a successful College experience. Aside from being a Leadership Peer facilitator, Maame Araba is a financial aid front office assistant and works with the trusted ride program at Saint Agnes Hospital.


About the Leadershop:

Leaders Take Their Time: Time management is a skill everyone needs in their life at every stage of their life. This Leadershop will allow everyone to prioritize their tasks and roles, create effective schedules while accommodating the curveballs of life, and learn to be an effective Leader.


Ice-Breaker: A show worth binge-watching?

A show I personally believe is worth binge-watching is White Lotus. I didn't think I would love it as much but from the theme song to the nuances, to the subtle comedy, it is definitely worth binge-watching. It's very addictive.


The Leadershops series consists of 1 hour workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and Leadership Peer Facilitators. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.

Every April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) calls attention to the impact sexual violence has on our community and how we all play a part in prevention.

The national theme of SAAM 2023 is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” The campaign recognizes sexual violence as both a public health and social justice issue. Systems of oppression such as racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism, and others contribute to higher rates of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse.

This year, we encourage you to examine and draw connections between various forms of oppression and the underlying causes of sexual assault. In addition, explore how certain groups of people are at higher risk for sexual violence and how those same people are also the most impacted by inequitable systems and oppression in our society.

This April don’t focus just on awareness but also action. We’re asking you to join us in building equity and respect within our community. We can help create change if we take the time to hear, understand, and recognize one another. 

Explore the UMBC departments and events that can help you build skills towards prevention and equity. Pick from this list at least one thing you can do to prevent sexual violence:

·       Attend a Green Dot Bystander Intervention Training – April 28, 1-5 p.m.

·       Request a Healthy Relationship Program/training for your student group or class.

·       Learn how to Use Your Voice with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life.

·       Stop by the Mosaic to learn about their services and events.

·       Attend Take Back the Night, the Women’s Center’s annual SAAM event.

·       Attend an I3b event, like I Am/ We Are April 19th, 5-6 p.m.

·       Participate in Love Quest a healthy relationship fact find this week!

·       Read more about this year’s national SAAM theme and how to discuss sexual violence and oppression.

About the Presenter:

Joshua Le (He/Him/His) is a Junior Public Health major on the Health Administration track at UMBC. Outside of UMBC, he enjoys playing video games with friends, listening to music, and sometimes writing poetry. Joshua believes that no leaders are born, but made; leadership plays an important role in Joshua’s identity. His goals as a Leadership Peer Facilitator is to guide others to find self-authorship and understand their values. Aside from being a Leadership Peer Facilitator, Joshua takes part in the Student Government Association  as a Senator, and is a Grit Guide within the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

Ice-Breaker: Favorite animal?

My favorite animal has to be the elephant or the snake… or the dragon… but most definitely the elephant. I love elephants because they represent wisdom, and it was also my great-grandmother’s favorite animal as well :D! 


The Leadershops series consists of 1 hour workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and Leadership Peer Facilitators. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.

We’re looking for students who are comfortable working in:

  • Illustrator CC+

  • Photoshop CC+

  • InDesign CC+

Bonus Points If:

  • You have experience in pre- and post-production print, or any other kind of printing skills

  • You have interest or experience with animation/motion design

  • You can get super nerdy about typography

  • You have an interest or experience in photography


Your personality is along the lines of:

  • Self-motivated

  • Team-oriented

  • Attentive to details

  • Manages time and deadlines well

  • You love design too much


Non-negotiables:

  • Be highly dedicated & organized

  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher

  • Must pass a judicial and OEI check

  • Must have at least 2 on-campus semesters left

  • Must be able to work at least 15 hours a week

  • Be an undergraduate student

  • Two references (name and contact information is fine)

  • Screenshot of your summer AND fall schedule (if you don’t have yet that is okay, just send us whether or not you want to start in summer or fall)
