<Title>Hope Walks Here</Title>
<Tagline>Join UMBC as we walk to #stopsuicide</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div>On April 29th, members of the UMBC community in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will participate in UMBC's annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk.</div><div><br></div><div>Each year our community walks to prevent suicide, <a href="https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/suicide" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">the third leading cause of death among people ages 15-24</a>, and to raise awareness that <em>no one is alone</em>.</div><div><br></div><div>The walk also provides our community with an opportunity to raise funds for Maryland's local AFSP chapter. With funds raised from the walk, AFSP can provide educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.</div><div><br></div><div>There are many reasons to <a href="https://youtu.be/ZPNpK5PE21U" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">walk</a>. At the event, participants will be able to choose to wear a selection of honor beads, recognizing why they personally have joined the walk. Outside of UMBC, Eli is a major sports fan, and his favorite teams are the Arizona Cardinals (Football) and the Phoenix Suns (Basketball). Eli believes that leadership is a spectrum and that everyone can lead differently. He believes people do not need to be the loudest and most prominent to lead people effectively. As an LPF(Leadership Peer Facilitator), Eli plans to help members of the UMBC community to find a leadership style that suits them. Besides being an LPF, Eli is a first-year Ambassador for SGA. </span></p><br><p><span><strong><u>About the Leadershop:</u></strong></span></p><p><span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/osl/events/112980" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Leadership 101:</a> The goal of this Leadershop is to help students to uncover their leadership style and, through simulations, incorporate what they learned into the world. This Leadershop is a fun and informative way to learn how to be a leader.</span></p><br><p><span><strong><u>Ice Breaker: What trait do you think is essential for a leader?</u></strong></span></p><p><span>Mediator: The most challenging part of being a leader is trying not to put a bias toward a particular person or group. As a leader, you are supposed to cooperate with groups and people to find compromise and common ground. A great leader can effectively mediate when groups and individuals are at odds.</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span></span></p><p><span>The </span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/osl/posts/131701" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Leadershops series</span></a><span> consists of 1 hour workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and Leadership Peer Facilitators.     <div class="html-content"><div><br></div><div><div>This is a reminder the Graduate Experience and Achievements Committee (GEARS) is hosting their flagship evet tomorrow, April 19th from 11-2PM.</div><div><br></div><div>The competition supports the students capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate toa  nonspecific audience, 3MT celebrates the exciting research conducted by Ph.D. students.
