Apply for Alternative Spring Break (ASB) 2024 (Waitlist)

<Tagline>UMBC students exploring systemic change in Baltimore</Tagline>

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a five-day immersive learning experience in which UMBC undergraduate and graduate students explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore. Participants build connections with local leaders, organizations, and policy makers and develop a sophisticated understanding of available resources and challenges. The program helps participants identify pathways to long-term community engagement.

This year’s ASB program will take place from Monday, March 18 - Friday, March 22, 2024. ASB participants spend much of the program in small groups (co-led by undergraduate students trained by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life) focused on exploring a specific topic in depth. ASB 2024 groups will focus on:

Educational Justice for LGBT+ Youth (co-led by Madison Brown and Musa Jafri)

Immigrant Health Justice (co-led by Simone Acquaye and Kina Soberano)

Improving Life After Prison (co-led by Aidan Hunter and Alberta Ndille)

To apply for a waitlist spot in ASB 2024, complete the application.

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life hosts ASB. More information on this program is available below.

__________________

ASB: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When is Alternative Spring Break (ASB)?

ASB takes place in March during UMBC’s Spring Break. ASB 2024 will take place from Monday, March 18 - Friday, March 22, 2024. To participate, you must be available to attend the entire program.

Where does ASB take place?

We are planning to host ASB 2024 in-person at the Holiday Inn Express in Linthicum Heights, Maryland. Participants will stay in hotel rooms. Some activities will happen on site, while others will happen in community spaces in Baltimore with partners from local and regional organizations. Round trip bus transportation will be provided.

How much does it cost to participate in ASB?

UMBC covers most of the cost of each participant’s attendance. However, each participant pays a $125, non-refundable contribution toward the program’s cost. Financial assistance is available. If you are selected to participate in ASB 2024, we will send you a form that includes an opportunity to request financial aid. We do not want the $125 contribution to be a barrier to anyone’s participation.

Do I have to be an “involved” student to participate in ASB?

Absolutely not. ASB will be helpful to any student regardless of previous involvement or leadership experience. No prior experience is necessary. We are looking for a diverse group of students committed to developing their social change and civic engagement skills and applying them to create positive change in the local community.

Can I participate in ASB again if I have participated before?

Yes, we welcome previous ASB participants to participate again.
Apply for STRiVE 2024 by November 6

<Tagline>UMBC's popular leadership for public purpose program</Tagline>

UMBC’s STRiVE program has inspired hundreds of undergraduate students in the past 15 years. Now it's your turn. Spend five days building community and developing skills while exploring leadership for social impact. You will emerge with greater clarity and confidence about the contributions you want to make.

This year’s STRiVE program will take place from Monday, January 8 - Friday, January 12, 2024. STRiVE participants will make new friends, discover their strengths and values, learn how to work more effectively in groups, envision contributions they could make at UMBC, and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges. Past STRiVE participants have gotten deeply involved in campus organizations and initiatives, and have made phenomenal contributions.

To apply for a spot in STRiVE 2024, complete the application by Monday, November 6, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life hosts STRiVE in partnership with the Student Government Association with support from PNC Bank. More information on this program is available below.

__________________

STRiVE: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When is STRiVE?

STRiVE takes place in January during UMBC’s Winter Break. STRiVE 2024 will take place from Monday, January 8 - Friday, January 12, 2024. To participate, you must be available to attend the entire program.

Where does STRiVE take place?

We are planning to host STRiVE 2024 in-person at Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, Maryland (round trip bus transportation from the UMBC campus will be provided to participants). Participants will stay in motel-style rooms and all activities will be held on site.

How much does it cost to participate in STRiVE?

UMBC covers most of the cost of each participant’s attendance. However, each participant pays a $125, non-refundable contribution toward the program’s cost. Financial assistance is available. If you are selected to participate in STRiVE 2024, we will send you a form that includes an opportunity to request financial aid. We do not want the $125 contribution to be a barrier to anyone’s participation.

Do I have to be an “involved” student to participate in STRiVE?

Absolutely not. STRiVE will be helpful to any student regardless of previous involvement or leadership experience. No prior experience or involvement is necessary. We are looking for a diverse group of students committed to developing their leadership skills and applying them to create positive change in the campus community.

Can I participate in STRiVE if I will be taking a winter class?

STRiVE's activities are scheduled from about 8:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. each day. You will not be able to attend class meetings or complete coursework during these times. If your class will include synchronous meetings during the week of STRiVE, it will not be possible for you participate in the program. If your class will take place asynchronously, it may be possible for you to participate. However, we strongly encourage participants taking asynchronous classes to complete their coursework during the weeks before or after STRiVE, as time to do coursework will be very limited and WiFi at the program site can be unreliable.

Can I participate in STRiVE again if I have participated before?

You can only participate in STRiVE once. So all participants in STRiVE 2024 will be participating for the first time.

How do I apply to participate in STRiVE?

Applications to participate in STRiVE 2024 are due on Monday, November 6, 2023 by 11:59 p.m. EST. All undergraduate students are invited to apply. Complete the application by clicking this link. All applicants will receive emails in late November letting them know about the status of their applications.
Strategic Planning: A Beginning

Over the decades, UMBC has become a national model for inclusive excellence, a comprehensive Research 1 public university, and a welcoming learning community that engages actively in advancing our surrounding neighborhoods, the state of Maryland, and the wider world. We are inspired and propelled by our shared values and a shared vision for UMBC.

We have the vision. The time is now to take up the challenge of setting a course to realize that vision. Over the coming year, it will be our collective endeavor to articulate a set of strategic aims for the university. We launch that effort officially today, and you will hear more in the coming days and weeks about the process by which we will invite your broad engagement, first in helping to determine how we will go about the work of strategic planning, and then in developing the plan and its aims. I have met this month with shared governance leaders and asked for their partnership in this effort.

Our strategic planning will be informed by the UMBC Bold Campus Conversations we convened last spring, listening sessions facilitated by students, faculty, staff, and alumni and attended by more than 1,000 members of our community. I am pleased to share with you the final report from those listening sessions prepared by our Bold co-chairs, Professors Vandana Janeja and Michelle Scott, and Vice President for Institutional Advancement Greg Simmons. It is a terrific summary of the sessions, which explored our aspirations for the undergraduate and graduate student experience, the research enterprise, economic development, community engagement, and more. I am deeply grateful to our co-chairs and to all who facilitated or participated in those sessions.

If you did not participate, do not worry. You will have many opportunities to engage in strategic planning. The Bold conversations were critical for our collective listening and learning, but they were just a beginning. As we move forward with strategic planning, we will look to continue to engage every part of UMBC and to hear diverse perspectives and voices from throughout our community.

Why bother with strategic planning, you may ask? The process of developing strategic priorities can unite a community, and a strategic plan that is grounded in our specific purpose and values can serve as a consistent reminder of who we are and what truly matters. It can engage all our audiences. Our stakeholders, our neighbors, and our prospective students, families, and employees in understanding and joining us in service of our purpose.

And articulating our purpose is both important and urgent in today's world, when the value of higher education is questioned daily; when the public mission of our institutions can easily be forgotten; when diversity, equity, and inclusion are positioned aggressively as barriers to excellence, rather than integral to it; and when a liberal arts approach to education is essential to solving the complex challenges of today and tomorrow. We have not only the opportunity, but also the responsibility to continue the pursuit of our vision to redefine excellence in higher education, and, as we do so, we will communicate to our community and to the world the extraordinary, distinctive value of our beloved UMBC.

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby

View on myUMBC »
