Calling All UMBC Creatives,  We're proud to announce a call for creative works taking inspiration from Dr. Lawrence Brown's book The Black Butterfly (UMBC's community read this year) and The Black Butterfly Dreamlab Project.  All disciplines encouraged; take your vision to the past, present, or future; draw inspiration from Baltimore, your home settings, or elsewhere. Interns support the Center's programs and initiatives, working collaboratively with other members of the staff. Each intern has a particular area of focus, but all members of the team are involved in developing and producing the Center's work. Interns work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the academic year, with some variation to be determined. Internships will begin in late August 2024 and conclude in May 2025.

The internships available for 2024 - 2025 are:

Evaluation intern (undergraduate and graduate students): Evaluation interns support the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's assessment, evaluation, and research projects; investigate topics related to Center for Democracy and Civic Life programs; and support the Center's contributions to national higher education initiatives.

Special projects intern (undergraduate students only): Special projects interns support the planning and implementation of the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's programs and initiatives. Tasks may include finding and compiling information, preparing instructional materials, ensuring the availability of program supplies, creating and distributing promotional materials, helping with program setup and cleanup, and guiding and checking in guests at program venues.

Political engagement intern (undergraduate and graduate students): Political engagement interns support programs that foster dialogue about current events and issues; connect UMBC students with the legislative process in Annapolis; engage them in politics and pathways to political leadership; and encourage their participation in local, state, and national elections.

All intern positions pay $15.00/hour to start.

All undergraduate and graduate students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in Alternative Spring Break (ASB), STRiVE, ConnectionCorps, and/or other Center for Democracy and Civic Life workshops or programs.

What is Meet and Confer (M&C)?

Meet and Confer (M&C) is a policy within the University System of Maryland (USM) that allows Graduate Assistants to participate in formal discussions with the administration regarding employment-related matters, including compensation and benefits. To learn more about M&C, please visit the UMBC website.


M&C Meetings- Spring '24

This year, we have adopted a new approach by organizing separate M&C meetings for each college at UMBC. This strategy is designed to address specific issues facing Graduate Assistants within individual colleges and departments in a more focused manner. Additionally, we have extended invitations to department chairs to ensure that department-level administration actively participates in resolving GA-related concerns, in collaboration with graduate school administration.


The CNMS M&C Meeting is scheduled for March 11th, and we strongly encourage all GAs from Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics and Statistics to complete the survey. Your input will allow you to voice your concerns and issues to the Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee, who will present them at the M&C meetings for discussion and resolution.

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) leaders

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a five-day immersive learning experience for undergraduate and graduate UMBC students organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life. During ASB, participants explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore, spending most of the week in small groups focusing on a specific issue or challenge. ASB groups work with community partners, elected officials, and scholars, in part to help participants identify their own pathways to long-term community engagement. ASB 2025 will take place during the week of UMBC’s Spring Break: March 17 - 21, 2025.

ASB 2025 will be developed by a team of student leaders organized and trained by Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff during weekly meetings in the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters. Together, the leaders will develop plans for a holistic, empowering ASB experience for participants. ASB leaders will work in pairs to develop small group experiences exploring social issues in Baltimore. Past ASB groups have explored challenges and solutions relating to equitable access to housing, nutritious food, and health care; disability justice; support for youth impacted by intimate partner violence; and a variety of other issues. Leaders can develop an experience relating to one of these topics, or to a new topic they propose.

The overall time commitment for ASB leaders is approximately 100 hours over the course of the fall 2024 semester, the winter 2025 term, and the spring 2025 semester. For specific meeting and program dates, see the application form.

ASB leaders receive a $1,250 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 121-03) on their transcripts for fall 2024 and spring 2025.

All undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in ASB.


ConnectionCorps participants

ConnectionCorps is a training program for UMBC undergraduate and graduate students aspiring to build skills in facilitating conversations that encourage authentic connection and democratic participation.

During the fall semester, members of the ConnectionCorps cohort participate in weekly training sessions. They also have opportunities throughout the semester to hone their skills by facilitating small group conversations within Center programs. The overall time commitment for the fall portion of ConnectionCorps is approximately 30 hours over the course of the semester. For specific meeting dates, see the application form.

Fall ConnectionCorps participants will have an opportunity to apply to continue the program in the spring semester to further hone their skills by developing and facilitating their own dialogue programs in consultation with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life team. The application for the spring portion of ConnectionCorps will be released in November 2024.

ConnectionCorps participants receive a $250 stipend during the fall portion of the program. ConnectionCorps participants selected to be a part of the spring portion of the program will receive an additional $750 stipend.

All undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply. (Important: This application is only for the fall portion of ConnectionCorps. Applicants do not need to commit now to applying for the second portion in the spring.)


STRiVE coaches

STRiVE is an immersive five-day leadership for public purpose program for UMBC undergraduate students organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life in partnership with the Student Government Association. STRiVE helps inspire and support students in becoming more effective leaders and contributors to their communities, especially the UMBC community. STRiVE participants develop friendships; discover their strengths and values; learn how to work more effectively in groups; envision contributions they could make at UMBC; engage issues relating to identity, privilege, and systemic oppression; and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges. STRiVE 2025 will take place from January 13 - 17, 2025.

STRiVE 2025 will be facilitated by a team of staff and undergraduate student coaches organized and trained by Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff during weekly meetings in the fall 2024 semester. Together, the coaches will rehearse sessions and make plans for an intensive, engaging STRiVE experience for participants. Each student coach will be paired with a staff coach to facilitate activities for a closely-knit small group (a “pod”) that will meet regularly during STRiVE. Coaches will be trained to facilitate pod and large group sessions.

The overall time commitment for STRiVE coaches is approximately 100 hours over the course of fall 2024 semester and winter 2025 term. For specific meeting and program dates, see the application form.

STRiVE coaches receive a $1,000 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 121-04) on their transcript for winter 2025.

All undergraduate students are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in STRiVE.

The Graduate Student Association elections for Senator Position are open now!

 

Here are the deadlines for the Senate Elections.


Nominations Open: March 4th, 8 am

Nominations Close: March 25th, 8 pm

Voting Opens: April 5th, 8 am

Voting Closes: April 20th, 8 pm

 

Interested in running for Senate but not sure what the position includes? 

 

Yearly, interested graduate students will submit nominations to the Graduate Senate to express an interest in being a graduate senator for either the applicants's college and or for the Student Affairs group. Senators are elected members who represent some portion of the graduate student body and compose the entirety of the Graduate Senate.

The Graduate Senate is composed of 4 senators from each of the following 4 groups: 

1. CNMS (College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences) 

2. CAHSS (College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) + Erickson School 

3. COEIT (College of Engineering and Information Technology) 

4. Student Affairs (Cultural, Religious, Social, Professional Interest Groups)

 

Meet the current Senators! 

 

Who is eligible?
 
ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS, that includes Masters and Ph.Ds.!

You must be in GOOD academic standing. GPA of 3.0 or higher.

 

All Graduate Students who are graduating Spring 2025 or any Spring Graduation date thereafter. (Terms are 1 year and begin July 1 and ending June 30 of the following year)

 

Duties:

Senators must represent the concerns and opinions of their constituency,

Senators must report on the proceedings of Senate Meetings to their constituency,

Senators must attend all Senate Meetings

Senators must host at least three (3) Town Hall meetings per Academic Year.

Senators must join and remain active on at least one university committee.

 Senators must report back the affiliated university committee meeting updates.

Length of Term:

Please keep in mind, the length of term for Senators shall be for one year, beginning on July 1 and ending June 30 of the following year. If you are graduating in the Winter of 2024 you are not eligible to apply.

The Woolie role is a fun leadership position for undergraduate students. Welcome Week Leaders (Woolies) are ambassadors for UMBC, and facilitate Welcome Week for new students at UMBC. Woolies develop relationships with new students, engage with Welcome Week events, and also help with the logistics of Welcome Week. Woolies are here to support new students and their transition to college by sharing their personal student experiences, valuable resources, and important upcoming events and opportunities.

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Summer Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming students VIRTUALLY during the months of June-August in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!


Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for graduate students to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering ANY career path where importance is placed on the ability to interact with clients in a positive manner, this is a TERRIFIC opportunity to add this valuable experience to your resume. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience specifically is highly sought-after in faculty openings.

Upon hire, you will be given the opportunity to select which days you are available to advise. Grad students are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening session.

In addition, for the first time ever, all advisors will have the opportunity to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential through Badges @UMBC, demonstrating to the campus and other institutions their customer service and analytical skills!

We are offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just might be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and get paid!
