REMINDER:Elections for Senator Position Nominations are OPEN NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON MARCH 25TH

Here are the deadlines for the Senate Elections.

Nominations Open: March 4th, 8 am

Nominations Close: March 25th, 8 pm

Voting Opens: April 5th, 8 am

Voting Closes: April 20th, 8 pm

 

Interested in running for Senate but not sure what the position includes? 

 

Yearly, interested graduate students will submit nominations to the Graduate Senate to express an interest in being a graduate senator for either the applicants's college and or for the Student Affairs group. Senators are elected members who represent some portion of the graduate student body and compose the entirety of the Graduate Senate.

The Graduate Senate is composed of 4 senators from each of the following 4 groups: 

1. CNMS (College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences) 

2. CAHSS (College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) + Erickson School 

3. COEIT (College of Engineering and Information Technology) 

4. Student Affairs (Cultural, Religious, Social, Professional Interest Groups)

 

Meet the current Senators! 

 

Who is eligible?
 
ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS, that includes Masters and Ph.Ds.!

You must be in GOOD academic standing. GPA of 3.0 or higher.

 

All Graduate Students who are graduating Spring 2025 or any Spring Graduation date thereafter. (Terms are 1 year and begin July 1 and ending June 30 of the following year)

 

Duties:

Senators must represent the concerns and opinions of their constituency,

Senators must report on the proceedings of Senate Meetings to their constituency,

Senators must attend all Senate Meetings

Senators must host at least three (3) Town Hall meetings per Academic Year.

Senators must join and remain active on at least one university committee.

 Senators must report back the affiliated university committee meeting updates.

Length of Term:

Please keep in mind, the length of term for Senators shall be for one year, beginning on July 1 and ending June 30 of the following year. If you are graduating in the Winter of 2024 you are not eligible to apply.

As our university community is gearing up for our mid-semester rest and Spring Break, our center hours will be amended in reflection of this. 

The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity will close on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 5pm and re-open on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 10am.

During this time we hope that all of our community members receive the rest and peace to fulfill themselves in anticipation of finishing the second half of our spring semester.

Run for SGA Senate, Finance Board or an Executive Branch position!
Current undergraduate students may access the SGA Candidate Application online. The deadline to apply is 3/22/2024 at Noon.

Positions available include:
President*
Executive Vice President*
Treasurer
Vice President for Student Organizations
Senator (11 positions available)
Finance Board (7 positions available)

*President/Executive Vice President must run as a ticket

What is Meet and Confer (M&C)?
Meet and Confer (M&C) is a policy within the University System of Maryland (USM) that allows Graduate Assistants to participate in formal discussions with the administration regarding employment-related matters, including compensation and benefits. To learn more about M&C, please visit the UMBC website.

M&C Meetings- Spring '24
This year, we have adopted a new approach by organizing separate M&C meetings for each college at UMBC. This strategy is designed to address specific issues facing Graduate Assistants within individual colleges and departments in a more focused manner. Additionally, we have extended invitations to department chairs to ensure that department-level administration actively participates in resolving GA-related concerns, in collaboration with graduate school administration.

The CAHSS M&C Meeting is scheduled for April 15th, and we strongly encourage all GAs from CAHSS Departments to complete the survey. Your input will allow you to voice your concerns and issues to the Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee, who will present them at the M&C meetings for discussion and resolution.
