M.O.S.T. OER Workshop Series
We are excited to offer you again this year the opportunity to register for an upcoming series of webinars on high-demand topics in OER, hosted by the Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative in partnership with the Rebus Community and facilitated by Apurva Ashok, Project Lead for the Rebus Community and facilitator of the Textbook Success Program. OER Ancillary Materials
Friday, February 14, 2022 | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
The term "Open Educational Resources (OER)" refers to not only high-quality textbooks, but also a number of additional teaching and learning aids called ancillary materials. Ancillary materials include presentations, quizzes, multimedia, interactive simulations, writing prompts, and more. In this session, we'll conduct an overview of different types of ancillary materials, where you can find them, and survey different platforms for delivery. We'll also cover how ancillary materials can be integrated with your textbook or used to align your content to course outcomes.

Interactive Textbooks with H5P
Friday, March 25, 2022 | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
With the shift to digital learning in online classrooms, we are reminded about the potential of OER to better engage with our students. This session will introduce H5P, a free tool that lets you create interactive content to embed in your textbooks. We'll look at the range of content types in H5P, see examples from published textbooks, and highlight other tools you can use to make dynamic OER.

OER Publishing with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Core
Wednesday, April 27, 2022 | 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
In this session, we'll discuss how Rebus' open publishing differs from traditional models by keeping diversity, equity, and inclusion in mind throughout the production cycle. Working with the principles of DEI is critical to creating valuable resources, and can have impacts beyond improving the quality of the OER. We'll highlight how creators in Maryland have adopted this approach in their projects.

About Apurva Ashok: Apurva Ashok is the Project Lead at Rebus Community and facilitator of the Textbook Success Program. Apurva studied literature and marketing at McGill University and completed the Master of Publishing program at Simon Fraser University. Her experience covers academic and open publishing, media, social justice, and volunteerism. During her time at Rebus, Apurva has worked closely with the teams of over 40 open textbooks including Blueprint for Success in College and Career, Media Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and the Introduction to Philosophy series. She is the co-author of The Rebus Guide to Publishing Open Textbooks (So Far) and has contributed to the award-winning Guide to Making Open Textbooks with Students. Apurva received the Support Specialist Award for Excellence from Open Education Global in 2020. |

Quality Matters (QM) is a nationally recognized, faculty-centered, peer review process designed to improve online and blended course quality to benefit online learners. The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop is QM's flagship workshop on the QM Rubric and the process of using the QM Rubric to review online and hybrid courses.
The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop is intended for a broad audience, including but not limited to faculty, instructional designers, administrators, and adjunct instructors who wish to understand more about the QM Rubric and process of course review. It is particularly helpful to those new to QM or those considering the adoption of a quality assurance process for online and blended learning. The APPQMR is also the prerequisite for the Peer Reviewer Course, which is required to become a QM Peer Reviewer.
Both face-to-face and online training opportunities are available to UMBC faculty from our sister USM institutions, Towson University, Salisbury University, and Frostburg University.
Face to Face Option - Towson University
Two hands-on Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshops are available:
- Friday, September 27, 2019
- Thursday, November 7, 2019
All workshops are held in the Cook Library, Room 404B from 9 AM – 4:30 PM. The cost of the workshop will be $30 (plus parking) and will include a continental breakfast and lunch along with a Quality Matters booklet and other course materials.
- Register online at Towson's Office of Academic Innovation website. Select the "USM Only - Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Workshop (APPQMR)"
- Towson representatives will email payment information and directions. Contact the Office of Academic Innovation via email if you have questions.
- Attendees must be present for the entire day to receive credit for the APPQMR certificate.
Parking is available on campus in the Towsontown Garage for $12 for the entire day. The individual participant is responsible for his/her own parking fee.
Online Option - Salisbury University & Frostburg University
Salisbury University & Frostburg University invite USM faculty and staff to join a 2- week, facilitated online Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop. Participants need approximately 7-8 hours per week to complete this workshop. Four sessions are scheduled:
- October 8-22, 2019
- November 12-26, 2019
- February 11-25, 2020
- July 7-21, 2020
The cost associated with the dedicated online APPQMR is $25. To register for the workshop, open an RT ticket with the individual’s name and department. A charge back to the department will occur for each instructor who signs up for the workshop.

The Skill Builder Boot Camp is a comprehensive 2-day workshop to provide hands-on training in core components of Blackboard and supporting technologies (Bb Collaborate, TechSmith Relay, etc.) available to faculty at UMBC.
Space is limited to 12 participants for personalized support and hands-on opportunities to practice. Scheduled for January 24-25, 2017, each day begins at 9 AM and ends at 4 PM. Lunch is provided.
