    <div class="html-content"><span>As online and classroom content begins to include video and audio components, there is an increasing need to ensure these materials are accessible. Under the ADA, either transcription or captioning is necessary and required to make audio and audiovisual media accessible to individuals with disabilities. UMBC is committed to eliminating discriminatory obstacles that may disadvantage students based on disability and seeks to create a learning environment that allows for inclusion and full participation by all students. <Title>Strengthen Your Online/Hybrid Courses with Quality Matters</Title>
<Tagline>Support student success with Applying the QM Rubric Workshop</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span><a href="http://www.qualitymatters.org" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Quality Matters</a> (QM) is a nationally recognized, faculty-centered, peer review process </span><span>designed to improve online and blended course quality to benefit online learners</span><span>. The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop is QM's flagship workshop on the QM Rubric and the process of using the QM Rubric to review online and hybrid courses. It is intended for a broad audience, including but not limited to faculty, instructional designers, administrators, and adjunct instructors who wish to understand more about the QM Rubric and process of course review. The APPQMR is also the prerequisite for the Peer Reviewer Course, which is required to become a QM Peer Reviewer.</span></p><p><span>Face-to-face training opportunities are available to UMBC faculty from our sister USM institution, Towson University. </span></p><p><span>Three hands-on Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshops are available:</span></p><ul><li><span>Thursday, September 15, 2016</span></li><li><span>Wednesday, November 9, 2016</span></li><li><span>Thursday, March 16, 2017</span></li></ul><p><span>All workshops are held in the Cook Library, Room 404B from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.</span></p><p><span>The cost of the workshop will be $30 and will include a continental breakfast and lunch along with a Quality Matters booklet and other course materials. Payment can be made by transfer of funds. Please request that your department send the funds to Academic Innovation (15470) at Towson via the R*Stars system, the interagency transfer program. Would you like to immerse others in some aspect of game playing? Have you tried</span><span> </span>gamifying<span> </span><span>a course and want to share what didn’t work and what would work better? Is there research on gamification – or learning – or design – that you’d like others to consider? </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/posts/60895" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">New Designs for Learning: Games and Gamification</a> symposium</span><span> invites interested groups and individuals to propose sessions for its September 29th event at the </span><span>College Park Marriott Hotel &amp; Conference Center</span><span>. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Participants include</span><span> instructional designers, faculty, and academic leaders from across the University System of Maryland who are interested in exploring how games and gamification can reinvigorate courses, boost student engagement, and enhance student learning.</span></div><div><br></div><div><span>Three types of sessions are being offered:</span></div><div><ul><li>Hands-on workshops (75 minutes)</li><li>Course showcase (60 minutes)</li><li>360 Talk (6-minutes, 4-5 talks per 45-minute session)</li></ul></div><div>To learn more about each of these sessions, please download and review the document attached to this announcement.</div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong>Deadlines and Notifications</strong></span></div><div><br></div><div>Proposals must be submitted by August 22, 2016.     <div class="html-content"><div><span>Join instructional designers, faculty, and academic leaders from across the University System of Maryland in exploring how games and gamification can reinvigorate courses, boost student engagement, and enhance student learning. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and the Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation at the University System of Maryland are pleased to cosponsor a working symposium entitled <strong>“New Designs for Learning: Games and Gamification,” on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at the College Park Marriott Hotel &amp; Conference Center.</strong></span></div><div><br></div><div>The Symposium promises to be a forum where participants can explore what is meant by gamification and game design thinking, discover the research behind the movement to gamify learning, and test out ways to gamify their own content and approaches to course design. The keynote address and a featured workshop will be offered by <a href="http://karlkapp.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Karl Kapp</a>, an Instructional Technology Graduate Professor at Bloomsburg University. <Title>Clicker License Codes to be Emailed to UMBC Students</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>As the campus begins the</span><a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/posts/58877" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span> migration to TurningPoint Cloud</span></a><span> this summer, students who purchased and registered their clickers on Blackboard <strong>prior to</strong></span><strong><span> March 1, 2016</span></strong><span><strong>  </strong>will receive Turning Account license codes via their UMBC email. Students will use these license codes to </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=66159040" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>create their Turning Accounts</span></a><span> and</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=66159040" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span> register clicker information</span></a><span> on </span><a href="http://blackboard.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Blackboard</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span>License codes will be sent out to students starting the week of </span><span>May 23</span><span>. The length of a student's license subscription is based upon the student’s enrollment status during the Spring 2016 semester (e.g., freshman, sophomore etc). <Title>Online Learning Consortium Offers Free Faculty Training</Title>
<Tagline>Expand Your Online Knowledge During Summer 2016</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Through a University System of Maryland partnership with the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), DoIT is pleased to offer an exceptional online training opportunity to UMBC full-time and part-time faculty.</span></p><p><span>The OLC workshop format utilizes proven teaching strategies and learning activities while modeling best practices for online and hybrid learning. Participants engage with experienced instructors and collaborate with peers via synchronous (live) and asynchronous environments. Normally these workshop cost about $300 each, but </span><strong><span>our partnership provides a limited number of seats at </span><span><em>no cost</em></span><span> to UMBC faculty</span></strong><span>.</span></p><p><span>These workshops require a time commitment of 3-7 days on average with some lasting up to 3 weeks. <Title>DoIT Test Scoring Services Moving to Library on June 1</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>As of June 1, 2016, DoIT’s </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/EAGRAQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Test Scoring Services (Scantron)</span></a><span> will no longer reside in the International Media Center (IMC), but will be relocated to the </span><a href="http://doit.umbc.edu/tsc" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Technology Support Center</span></a><span> (TSC) on the first floor of the Albin O. Kuhn Library, to the right of the security gates and adjacent to the Retriever Learning Center (RLC). The move is a result of the IMC being repurposed for use by offices and staff in the Academic Services Bldg, which will be razed for the new </span><a href="http://fm.umbc.edu/projects/interdisciplinary-life-sciences-building/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Bldg</span></a><span>. </span></p><p><span>In addition, due to storage constraints at the TSC and </span><a href="https://umbc.box.com/v/scantronusage" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>analysis of prior usage</span></a><span>, DoIT will be shredding scored exams one week after final grades are submitted for a given semester, if they are not picked up by the instructor. Faculty will continue to be notified via RT ticket when their exams are available for pickup during the semester, but we will shred them after final grades are due, unless we’re told we can do so sooner.  We will continue to provide .csv and .pdf electronic files of scanned results in each course’s Blackboard “course files” area as well as on Box.com.</span></p><p><span>Finally, DoIT will be upgrading our current Scantron hardware and using the new </span><a href="http://www.scantron.com/software/classroom-testing/remark-classic/overview" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Remark Classic</span></a><span> analysis software recommended by Scantron and used by many other schools using Scantron products.
