OLC Ideate Labs for Online STEM: Innovating STEM Education 2020  



With COVID pandemic, virtual labs are now a requirement rather than a "nice to have".  There are many technologies and strategies that can complement and substitute for face-to-face STEM labs that are no longer viable due to the COVID-19 pandemic.   

  

To help higher education institutions and faculty successfully respond to this new requirement.   MERLOT and OLC will be offering for FREE, a 3-day OLC Ideate Labs for Online STEM: Innovating STEM Education 2020 conference on August 19-21, 2020 on strategies for teaching STEM labs online with various technologies. This free virtual expo will showcase a wide range of virtual and distance labs designed to support online STEM education, offered by both commercial and open educational resource (OER) providers.

The USM OnTrack website has been updated to include new Online Teaching Resources. USM has revamped the emergency remote teaching web resources shared last spring to focus on the pivot to online/hybrid, and hyflex models for the fall. The resources include four new topical areas: Ensuring Equity and Inclusion, Assessing Student Learning, Humanizing Online Courses, and Supporting High-Enrollment Courses. In addition, the USM has updated the existing topical areas with resources relevant to the Fall 2020 semester.

A future update to this tool will support sending the announcement as an email to students.

The text editor also features another update across all areas where it is available. The Insert Video function, indicated by a video icon, will now be called Insert Media from Web. Users can add media from these sites: Panopto, VoiceThread, YouTube, Vimeo, Quizlet, and Soundcloud, among others. Please check the FAQ for more supported sites and how-to steps.

Finally, Blackboard adds support for Ultra journals in the course copy and Original course conversion processes. Now, journals and their prompts can be copied from one course to another, regardless of the course view. Faculty can use Copy Content in an Ultra course to copy journals between Ultra courses. Journals can also be converted from an Original course to an Ultra course as part of the Ultra Course Preview. NOTE: These capabilities apply to journals prompt and entries only and do not include comments.

The next Blackboard Learn update will be posted to our test site around August 11 and pushed to production around September 3, 2020. Faculty who are interested in test driving new features before they are released to production should open an RT ticket to request early access.

USM OnTrack is now providing a system-wide site license for all USM institutions for Labster. As a result, it will NOT be necessary to charge students the $45/course fee.

The upgraded agreement will last for a full calendar year (fall, winter, spring, and summer terms) and will provide access to Labster's services including faculty development, access to ALL simulations, tech support, etc.

USM is providing faculty training and inter-institutional coordination of resources to explore the use of virtual reality technologies by Labster for use in lab-based courses. Virtual reality technologies give students access to realistic lab experiences that will let them perform experiments and practice their skills. These tools promise to provide sufficiently high-fidelity simulations for learning lab techniques and inquiry skills, particularly for lower-level lab courses.

Labster has set up a website for USM OnTrack to allow faculty and others to review their catalog of labs/simulations.

USM OnTrack is providing faculty training and inter-institutional coordination of resources to explore the use of virtual reality technologies by Labster for use in lab-based courses. Virtual reality technologies give students access to realistic lab experiences that will let them perform experiments and practice their skills. These tools promise to provide sufficiently high-fidelity simulations for learning lab techniques and inquiry skills, particularly for lower-level lab courses.

Labster has set up a website for USM OnTrack to allow faculty and others to review their catalog of labs/simulations.

Additionally, we will be hosting three live demonstrations with Q&A on the following dates:

Sessions will include lessons learned from faculty users, vendor demos, “birds of a feather” break-outs by discipline and role, and a closing plenary focused on pedagogical uses of adaptive courseware.

Adaptive Tools for High-enrollment Online Courses:  Improving the COVID-19 Learning Experience for Students and Faculty

Participants in the summit will have a chance to learn about an array of adaptive technologies from organizations such as Lumen Learning, Carnegie Mellon’s Online Learning Initiative (OLI), CogBooks, RealizeIt, and McGraw Hill ALEKS. Faculty users will share lessons learned about these tools and delve into how adaptive courseware has helped them to support student success.

The Summit will be geared toward high-enrollment (large lecture, multi-section) courses for which high-quality, adaptive courseware exists: General education, introductory courses in the major, and first-year experience and other transitions courses.

USM OnTrack has pre-purchased a pool of online teaching professional development workshops from Quality Matters (QM) on beginning to advanced topics, including designing for learner engagement, flipping the online course, setting expectations with students, active learning strategies, accessibility, and online assessment.
 
Registration is now open for the first set of workshops, being offered from July 7th through July 30th (see attached list). Links to workshops after July 30th will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.
 
Prior to registering for any workshops, you will need to create an account on MyQM;click here to access instructions for creating a MyQM account (also attached).
