<Title>June update supports written feedback via Ultra rubric rows</Title>

As soon as we have more information, we will post it.</span></p><p><span><strong>7/1 update</strong>: The June release was rolled into the July update.</span></p><p><span>Rubrics can be an essential tool for faculty and the assessment grading workflow. In this release for early summer, the rubrics in Ultra courses will now support written feedback by row criteria. This segmented approach offers more flexibility and allows faculty to provide more detail to students when grading.</span></p><p><span>The updated rubric will appear whenever rubrics can be used in an Ultra course including discussions, anonymous assignments, single attempts, and multiple attempts. However, when using rubrics with parallel grading, while all delegated graders will have this functionality available, only the reconciler's feedback will be visible to students.</span></p><p><img src="https://blackboard.umbc.edu/bbcswebdav/institution/doitnews/ultra-updates/RubricFeedback_Criterion.png" alt="Feedback on rubric by row criteria" width="225" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p><p><span>The June update also brings increased support for right to left languages including a fully flipped user interface across the user's dashboard and Ultra course experience. Enhancements to the Ultra course's content editor will allow users to write in right to left languages to adjust the text's direction display. </span></p><p><span>A few smaller updates to Ultra courses include inserting audio or video announcements (up to 5 minutes) and enhancements to the peer assessment tool for notifications and batch edit.</span></p><p><span><span>T</span>he next update to our test environment will take place on June 8, 2021. <Title>Test Scoring Moving to Akindi Bubble Sheets</Title>
<Tagline>Print or scan a test from any local computer</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Beginning Fall 2021, UMBC will employ <a href="https://akindi.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Akindi</a> for paper-based, bubble sheet assessments. Akinidi is a Scantron alternative that allows instructors to print and score bubble sheets from <em>any</em> local printer/scanner. </div><div><br></div><div>Before UMBC's physical campus closed due to COVID-19, CHEM 101 and CHEM 102 participated in a limited Spring 2020 pilot using Akindi, with approximately 700 students enrolled in each course. Dr. Sarah Bass, Lecturer from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, reflected on her experience with Akindi on a <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/posts/98329" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">recent GO Chat</a>:</div><div><br></div><blockquote><div><em><strong>"I loved Akindi and I never want to go back to Scantrons! </strong>The integration with Blackboard made Akindi easy to use. One of the advantages was that I didn't have to take this huge pile of Scantrons across campus and hope that I would get the results back quickly. With Akindi, I had all of the results at my fingertips within forty-five minutes, which let students get their results and feedback as quickly as possible. I was able to review exam material with them the following class period." </em></div></blockquote><div><br></div><div><strong>How does Akindi work?</strong></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><ol><li>Within a Blackboard course shell, instructors create an Akindi assessment to add their answer key.</li><li>Akindi will generate bubble sheets as a downloadable PDF that instructors will print from a standard printer with standard paper to make copies for distribution. </li><li>Students will use the provided Akindi bubble sheet for their multiple choice, paper assessment.</li><li>Using any standard scanner, instructors scan all returned bubble sheets into a PDF file.</li><li>Instructors upload the PDF file from the scanner into the corresponding Akindi Assessment in Blackboard. Akindi will flag assessments that may need manual review (e.g., bubbling two responses, missing ID).</li><li>Akindi will score the assessments and post scores into the Blackboard gradebook. </li></ol></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Why transition from Scantrons to Akindi?</strong></div><div><br></div><div><em>Scantron Turnaround</em></div><div>The Technology Support Center (TSC) is responsible for scanning and returning completed Scantron assessments. While the TSC's goal is to return assessments within 2 business days, meeting this goal during peak assessment periods for midterm and final exams is challenging. These peak times are precisely when the TSC is most needed for faculty and student support. With Akindi, instructors can more easily and quickly score and return results to students. </div><div><br></div><div><em>Just-in-time Teaching</em></div><div>Immediate feedback improves just-in-time pedagogical strategies where faculty can leverage assessment data to specifically review content at a time in the course schedule that has heightened relevance for students. Some UMBC faculty have used <a href="https://scholarworks.iu.edu/journals/index.php/jotlt/article/view/29156" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"Exam wrapper" reflections</a> where they ask students, after receiving their results, to reflect on their strategies to prepare for the exam.</div><div><br></div><div><em>Student Feedback</em></div><div>Immediate feedback gives students performance indicators on assessments that can inform their study habits or outreach efforts for tutoring and support. Additionally, students only have access to the original, physical bubble sheet, which may delay or prevent students from reviewing transcription or other grading errors. With Akindi, instructors can choose to email students a copy of the scanned image as soon as grades are posted to Blackboard. </div><div><br></div><div><em>Analytics and Regrading</em></div><div>Results from scored Scantrons are compiled in a CSV file, where instructors can manipulate the data in order to generate reports within any spreadsheet application; instructors also receive a static PDF report of the data. If there were errors on the answer key, or a question needs to be thrown out, all of the assessments would need to be rescored. Additionally, instructors are unable to run what-if analyses to determine the effects of throwing out a question or answer choice. Akindi provides a dynamic interface for instructors to manipulate and review bubble sheet assessment data.  </div><div><br></div><div><em>Bubble Sheet Retention</em></div><div>Scantrons are required to be stored at the TSC until picked up by faculty members; some assessments administered from Summer 2017 still remain unclaimed. Scantron alternatives can offer digital copies of bubble sheets, which only requires computer or cloud disk space instead of physical storage. Further, Akindi can email a copy of the scored exam directly to students for their review. </div><div><br></div><div><em>Integration with Blackboard</em></div><div>Results from scored Scantrons are compiled in a CSV file, uploaded by the TSC into a Blackboard course's Content Collection. The process to take the results from the Content Collection to the Gradebook is not as seamless as it could be, especially when pushing results from Akindi to the Gradebook is only a click away. If instructors wish to regrade a particular question, the CSV must first be downloaded, amended, then re-uploaded into the Blackboard gradebook. With Akindi, instructors can edit the answer key within Blackboard and immediately update results. </div><div><br></div><div><strong>Next Steps</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Instructors that wish to continue using <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/EAGRAQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Scantrons for their bubble sheet assessments</a> will still be able to do so during this transition throughout Fall 2021. </div><div><br></div><div>Over the next several weeks, we will be announcing training dates with Akindi to prepare faculty for this transition. <Title>Faculty prioritize grading &amp; assessments for Ultra&#8217;s future</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>When Ultra was </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=72870" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>first introduced</span></a><span> at UMBC in SP2018, four adventurous faculty opted to use a newly redesigned Blackboard course interface in their courses. Ultra represented a new phase of Blackboard’s development, focusing on student success, responsive design, mobile friendliness, and embedded analytics. Nearly three years later, more than 300 faculty now use Ultra at UMBC across more than 1200 courses throughout the pandemic. Both </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=89258" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>students and faculty alike praise</span></a><span> Ultra’s interface and usability.</span></p><p><span>Our </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/_AQ9BQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Ultra adoption</span></a><span> is </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=96522" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>around 40% of the total active Blackboard courses</span></a><span>, with most faculty adoption occurring before the pandemic and a substantial surge occurring during the pandemic. A recent plateau in adoption suggested there might be some challenges we needed to confront with Ultra’s progress and discussions to consider. Before we can get to that point, we need to reflect on the last year of teaching online and a longer time of teaching with Ultra.</span></p><p><span><strong>12 Months of Ultra Updates</strong></span></p><p><span>Every month, our Blackboard site gets </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?tag=ultra-update" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>the latest updates</span></a><span>, thanks to our cloud hosting. Given the broad scope that Ultra presents to courses, these updates may seem slower when released on a monthly cadence. However, </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/LohnB" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>the list of features and enhancements</span></a><span> is quite substantial. Key highlights include conditional release of content by groups, new text formatting options including HTML blocks, batch enrolling students into groups, qualitative peer assessments, passcode protecting tests and test feedback/grade release, and 25 videos per page in Collaborate. With the </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=101092" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>May release</span></a><span>, faculty can set up a drop grades rule in the Ultra gradebook.</span></p><p><span><strong>Prioritizing What’s Needed for Ultra</strong></span></p><p><span>Now that we know what's been added to Ultra, let's look at what we're still looking to enhance. In FA2019, we gathered </span><a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1pC7E59E7uhxuyV4H97V6RkstsvD9OsdqVoxy7pEfwVY/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>75+ of the requested features and functionality</span></a><span> for Ultra and shared this critical information with Blackboard. In SP2021, we sent a survey to all faculty teaching Ultra to prioritize the key features by functional area. The Ultra prioritization survey helped us understand UMBC’s faculty priorities and gave Bb’s developers a strong framework for how our faculty used Ultra for teaching.</span></p><br><p><img src="https://blackboard.umbc.edu/bbcswebdav/institution/doitnews/ultra-updates/UX_Survey_ShiftingPriorities.png" alt="Summarizing Ultra tool needs: Shifting priorities between SP/FA2019 and SP2021" width="600" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p><p><span><strong>Figure 1: Summarizing Ultra tool needs: Shifting priorities between SP/FA2019 and SP2021. </strong></span><em><span>We looked at faculty feedback on Ultra from </span><a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1QN-xstChacbqCqQuV-nWveY6RssQgE2_2AzbsAXxQDg/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>SP2019/FA2019</span></a><span> and </span><a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1syewu_iFMHXlh3IXiw3dPHtvNTKLalmj6nD0_lITaEA/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>FA2020</span></a><span> to compare priorities, noting that key functional areas have shifted. Whereas faculty once placed group management as a major concern in Ultra’s early development, grading and assessment are now at the top of the list. </span></em></p><span><p><span><strong>Where is Ultra Going Next?</strong></span></p><p><span>Last month, Wade Fields, product manager for Ultra’s development team, met with UMBC’s </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/kAU9BQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Ultra Faculty Ambassadors</span></a><span> to share details about </span><a href="https://youtu.be/evJX5zWB2T8" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Ultra’s roadmap</span></a><span>. The future of Ultra is planned in several phases, and it’s important to note that software development can change rapidly due to client feedback and other circumstances (like a pandemic). With that in mind, we can share these planned items, many of which are high priority items for our faculty.</span></p><p><span>Throughout SU2021, Blackboard anticipates releasing rubric feedback by criteria, right-to-left alignment for the content editor, audio/video recording support for course announcements, tables for the content editor, achievement support, and gradebook filtering by groups and other criteria. In the third quarter of 2021, Blackboard plans several exciting enhancements that align to our faculty priorities including point-based rubrics; assignment submission receipts for students; and personal pronouns and pronunciation name guides for all users.</span></p><p><span>On the longer term roadmap, Blackboard seeks to improve grading and assessment workflows including support for test display and continues to research improvements to the notification and messaging system. Goals include enhancing the course landing page, learning modules, accommodations, and offering deeper integrations for Google and Microsoft.</span></p><p><span><strong>What Happens Next?</strong></span></p><p><span>When asked, 56% of UMBC’s Ultra Faculty Ambassadors said they were satisfied that the proposed feature development of Ultra would support their upcoming teaching, and 44% were encouraged by the roadmap enough to keep watching and using Ultra for next year.     <div class="html-content"><p><em><span><strong>UPDATE</strong>: </span><span>Following the </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=99804" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">introduction of gallery view</a><span> to faculty </span><span>in April 2021, we are pleased to announce that students and participants will also have access to 25 videos per page with the May update.</span></em></p><p><span>Sometimes it can</span> important for users to choose who they want to focus on in a synchronous session. Instructors may want to keep a close eye on students who are struggling with the course. Students may want to follow a sign language interpreter, stay focused on the instructor, or see their study buddies. Gallery view <a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=99804" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">introduced 25 videos per page</a> in April 2021. With this month's Collaborate update, attendees <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/25TLBg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">can pin videos</a> so they are always in view.</p><p>When you pin a video, it moves the video to the top of the list and pins, or anchors, it there. It doesn't change the number of videos you see, just the order you see them in. </p><p><img src="https://blackboard.umbc.edu/bbcswebdav/institution/doitnews/ultra-updates/collab_moderator_video_pinned.png" alt="Pinning videos in Collaborate" width="500" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p><p><span>Use the Attendee controls in the Attendees list or in the lower right corner of a video to pin and unpin videos. </span>Pinned videos will appear in the order they were pinned, and you can pin more than one. <Title>12 Effective Practices for Delivering Blackboard Tests</Title>
<Tagline>Get ready for final exams with these test prep tips</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Online tests and assignments are an effective and convenient way to assess students in the virtual environment. Throughout the semester, faculty can leverage many different options and settings for digital assessments. Here are a dozen tips to improve your test administration and assignment collection as the semester reaches its conclusion. </span></p><p><span><strong>1. Avoid Force Complete on Original Tests</strong></span></p><p><span>This </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/OITNAw" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>legacy setting on Original tests</span></a><span> prevents students from accessing the test environment if they prematurely leave. Unfortunately, if students lose internet access, have technical difficulties, double-click a link, they can be kicked out of the exam, requiring that you add a new attempt or reset the attempt altogether. Instead of using force complete, set your exam to Auto Submit, which will allow students back into the test and collect the student’s submission at the end of the allotted time whether or not the student is finished.</span></p><p><span><strong>2. Practice Before Proctoring</strong></span></p><p><span>Before you use </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0AI9BQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Respondus Lockdown Browser</span></a><span> (alone or with<a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/KIvLBg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> live proctoring</a> or with Monitor enabled), create a no-points practice quiz with unlimited attempts so students can experience the testing environment and configure their computers before they take an exam. If you do not have a practice quiz, be sure to allow plenty of extra time for students to set up. This is especially important if students need to <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/hobLBg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">update their lockdown browser</a>.</span></p><p><span><strong>3. Describe Test Expectations</strong></span></p><p><span>Let students know how many questions and what kind of questions they will have on the test. Post the test limit, whether the test will auto-submit when time is up, and if there is more than one attempt. Include start and end times. Link to relevant FAQs on </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/Z4RaAQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>test taking tips</span></a><span> or </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/BQb9Aw" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>using Respondus Lockdown Browser</span></a><span>, if enabled.</span></p><p><span><strong>4. Communicate Your Handling of Technical Difficulties</strong></span></p><p><span>Tell students how you will address any potential technical issues during a test. Be fair and swift, especially if your test timer is limited. Consider whether you will respond to individual emails or post an announcement. Some technical issues may be deferred until business hours the next day so please consider how you will handle these types of questions. Know which vendors offer 24/7 support (e.g., </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/BQb9Aw" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Respondus</span></a><span>) so you can refer students to those resources.</span></p><p><span><strong>5. Stagger Access to the Test</strong></span></p><p><span>Avoid having too many students access your test at the same time. You can set a wide window when students can start the test, but create a timer so once the test starts, students only have a fixed amount of time to complete it. You can also apply </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/tYFaAQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Adaptive Release (Original) or Conditional Release (Ultra) rules</span></a><span> to restrict access to specific groups of students.</span></p><p><span><strong>6. Set Question Display for the Right Situation</strong></span></p><p><span>Showing all questions on one page can be great for short tests during a short amount of time. However, for longer tests (25+ questions or taking more than 1 hour), consider that students may benefit from displaying one question at a time. Additionally, Blackboard can time out if the test is too long: <em>See #7 next on our list!</em></span></p><p><span><strong>7. Break Up Large Tests</strong></span></p><p><span>Blackboard will time out after three hours of general inactivity. Instead of delivering one long 2-hour test, provide four 30-minute tests. Chunking the test eases impact on Blackboard and student network connections while also providing opportunities for those screen and stretching breaks. </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/tYFaAQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Adaptive Release (Original) or Conditional Release (Ultra) rules</span></a><span> can also be leveraged to open the next part of an assessment based on specific criteria such as a minimum grade or date/time. </span></p><p><span><strong>8. Allow Backtracking on Original Tests</strong></span></p><p><span>Students like to check their answers or skip questions if they are uncertain about an answer. If you don’t allow students to backtrack, they will attempt to use the back arrow on the browser and inadvertently cause an issue with the test or lock themselves out. </span></p><p><span><strong>9. Dip Into the Pool</strong></span></p><p><span>Leverage question pools to generate randomized and unique tests for students. </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/GAfBBQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Random blocks (Original)</span></a><span> and </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/ggY9BQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Question pools (Ultra)</span></a><span> allow you to choose a defined number of questions (5) out of a larger collection of questions (50) and randomly distribute those questions to students so each one sees a different set. Set Access Codes on Ultra Tests to Prevent Late Submissions</strong></span></p><p><span>Instead of hiding an Ultra test with a date restriction, </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/gYF3Bg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>use an access code</span></a><span> after the test period ends. This allows students to see their grades and feedback and prevents any late submissions. </span></p><p><span><strong>11. Remind Students to Check Technology</strong></span></p><p><span>Students should use the latest version of </span><a href="https://www.google.com/chrome/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Chrome</span></a><span> or </span><a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Firefox</span></a><span> when </span><a href="https://help.blackboard.com/Learn/Student/Getting_Started/Browser_Support" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>taking a Blackboard test</span></a><span>, and they should check for browser updates regularly. To optimize performance, all other applications should be closed unless you allow access during the test. Students should verify that cookies are enabled for Blackboard, </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/BIgpB" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Collaborate</span></a><span>, and related third-party tools. Respondus Lockdown Browser has </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/EganB" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>its own requirements</span></a><span>, including </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/hobLBg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>manual update of its application</span></a><span>, and restrictions as well as settings for faculty if there are specific use cases for accessing websites, calculators, and spreadsheets.</span></p><p><span><strong>12. <Title>New Update to Respondus Lockdown Browser Released</Title>
<Tagline>Students using Macs &amp; Chromebooks must install update</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>A new update to Respondus Lockdown Browser (RLDB) is available for students to download and install. This update is for Mac users and the Chrome extension. </span></p><p><span>Students must make sure they are </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/hobLBg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">using the latest version of RLDB </a><em>before</em><span> taking a Blackboard test if the secure browser is required.</span></p><ul><li><span>For Chromebook users, the extension should </span>auto-update the extension to <strong>version 0.2.0.52</strong>. However, if students don’t see this version, they can update the extension manually, or remove/re-install the Chrome extension. </li><li><span>For Windows users, start RLDB, select the “i” button from the toolbar. The version will be displayed and you can also click on “Check for Newer Version”. If a newer version is available, you'll have the option to download and install it.  </span></li><ul><li><span>At this time, Windows users do not have a new update, but should check for updates every time they launch the application before a test to verify they are using the latest version. <strong>The last known version for Windows is 2.0.7.01</strong></span><span><strong>.</strong></span></li><ul><li><span><strong>NEW as of 8 PM ET</strong>: The Windows RLDB was updated to <strong>version </strong></span><strong>2.0.7.02.</strong></li></ul></ul><li><span>For Mac users, start RLDB and then select “About” from the toolbar. The version will be displayed as shown above, and you can click “Check for Update" to see if a newer version is available. <strong>The latest Mac version is 2.0.7.03</strong>.</span></li></ul><p><span>Existing Mac/Windows installs of Respondus LockDown Browser will NOT be auto-updated at this time. Students must run the "Check for newer version" tool to download and install the update. <Title>Finalize Ultra gradebooks with new drop grades function</Title>
<Tagline>Much needed feature finally arrives to Ultra courses in May</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div><p><span>An easier way to drop multiple grades from a category in the final grade calculation has been a frequent request from Ultra faculty for the Ultra course gradebook. With <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/LohnB" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">the May release</a>, just in time for SP2021 final grades, instructors will be able to decide if they want to add additional rules to how their overall grade is calculated when using calculation by categories. </span></p><p><span>The new drop grades function allows Ultra faculty to drop as many grades as they want as long as there are more items inside the category than dropped items, or to choose just the lowest or highest grade to be considered for that category. </span></p><p><img src="https://blackboard.umbc.edu/bbcswebdav/institution/doitnews/ultra-updates/ultra_dropGrades.png" alt="New interface for dropping grades in Ultra gradebook" width="500" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p><p><span>When rules are in place, students can gain access to their overall grade calculation details and see if some additional rules have been set by their instructors, which gives them clarity on how their grades are calculated and why their calculations might defer from the ones displayed in their gradebook.</span></p><p><span>Get a sneak peek at the new drop grades feature! </span><span>Join <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events/93621" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">our Ultra gradebook office hours on May 5</a> for an </span><span>interactive session. <Title>Using WebEx for Live Instruction and Collaborative Learning</Title>
<Tagline>One Instructor&#8217;s Use Case and Lessons Learned</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content">It’s a cliche at this point for one to state that this past year has presented many complexities for all of us to adapt to. Not the least daunting of these adversities has been connecting meaningfully with peers and colleagues over web-conferencing platforms. This difficulty has spurred a myriad of responses and tool adoptions, particularly within a domain with which we are all now intimately familiar – online learning. Of notable concern for faculty and students throughout this period of uncertainty and innovation has been the need to connect and interact synchronously. What are the best tools and practices to facilitate learning?<br><br>UMBC has been particularly well positioned throughout this time, supporting both <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Blackboard+Collaborate" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Blackboard Collaborate Ultra</a> and <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Webex" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">WebEx</a> as synchronous platforms. But with this wealth of opportunity, one is at times left wondering what platform to adopt and for what use cases. The response to these concerns require some nuance: It depends on what one is attempting to undertake and how much time one is willing to spend preparing their learning spaces to promote learner interactions.<br><br><a href="https://cirtl.umbc.edu/leadership-team/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Professor Jamie Gurganus</a>, the undergraduate program coordinator and a faculty member in the UMBC’s <a href="https://me.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Mechanical Engineering Department</a>, Director for the Center for Integrated Research, Teaching and Learning (<a href="https://cirtl.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">CIRTL</a>), as well as Associate Director of Engineering Education Initiatives at <a href="https://coeit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">COEIT</a>, has been using WebEx as her platform of choice for teaching her mechanical engineering students, or “Mechies.” She’s developed an exceptionally well thought out approach to incorporate live instruction, lab participation, and peer-to-peer group learning.<br><br>For Professor Gurganus, a primary concern has been in facilitating the same types of design and collaborative learning experiences she’s been able to provide through face-to-face instruction, particularly for supporting group work. How can one best scaffold undergraduate students in large classroom settings to engage in discussions with their peers and coordinate on long term design projects? She has found using the WebEx spaces, although time consuming to configure, conducive to facilitating the kinds of interactions students need to be successful in the courses she teaches, from brainstorming and critical problem solving, to developing product prototypes for customers with special needs.<br><br>Her adaptation and model of WebEx for lecturing and collaborative learning appears both thoughtfully designed to be comfortable and inviting while simultaneously strikingly commonsensical. Students enter her sessions to the sound of music and respond to icebreaker questions such as “Would you rather fight with  Marvel or DC heroes and why?” Her lectures, with both her forward facing camera and slidedeck presented, are recorded. Attendance is taken by Teaching Fellows (<a href="https://news.umbc.edu/umbc-students-help-create-richer-online-courses-for-peers-in-engineering-and-computing-fields/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Undergraduate Teaching Assistant</a>) based on breakout group participation or by using <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=68584284" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Qwickly Attendance</a>.
