August Ultra update delivers smarter image descriptions, captioned video announcements, and table of contents for learning modules

<Tagline>Get back-to-school ready with new Ultra design features</Tagline>

This month’s Ultra update makes it easier than to generate meaningful descriptions for complex images. August also brings new tools for recording video announcements, styling course materials, and helping students stay organized with improved module navigation.

The newest enhancement to Ally’s AI-powered Alt Text Assistant brings advanced support for describing complex images -- including charts, diagrams, graphs, and even handwritten notes. Instructors can continue using the same one-click workflow to generate alt text for images embedded in Blackboard-created content. This upgrade is especially valuable for STEM, social science, or data-rich courses where traditional alt text tools fall short, helping faculty meet accessibility standards while saving time and improving the learning experience for all students.

Image 1. Instructors can generate descriptions for complex images using Ally's AI Alt Text Assistant.

With the new video announcement feature, instructors can record short videos (up to 5 minutes) directly into course announcements. Each video includes automatic captions and transcripts, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards while offering a more personal and engaging way to communicate with students. Whether you’re introducing a new unit, clarifying expectations, or just adding a human touch, video announcements help strengthen instructor presence and build rapport, especially in fully online or asynchronous courses.

<img src="https://help.blackboard.com/sites/default/files/styles/rich_text_large/public/images/2025-07/learn_instructor_video-studio-in-announcements.png.webp?itok=qkfnzjLk" alt="Image 2. Students can check off items as they complete them and choose to navigate via the sidebar or previous/next buttons. Assessments now open in a full panel, creating a more consistent and less fragmented experience. This streamlined structure helps reduce cognitive load, supports self-regulated learning, and improves the overall usability of content-heavy modules.

<img src="https://help.blackboard.com/sites/default/files/styles/rich_text_large/public/images/2025-07/learn_student_LearningModules_nav-buttons.png.webp?itok=M4cPU1QY" alt="Image 3. Style options like “question,” “tip,” “key points,” “next steps,” and “highlight” feature icons and color coding to distinguish them from standard content. These simple formatting tools help draw attention to important information, scaffold learning more clearly, and make your content more engaging for students. Update Aug 8: This feature is postponed to September.

<img src="https://help.blackboard.com/sites/default/files/styles/rich_text_large/public/images/2025-08/Documents_instructor_blockstyling.png.webp?itok=3g9HlhE0" alt="Image 4.
Tom Penniston selected for prestigious Fulbright Award to advance learning analytics

<Tagline>Coordinator of Learning Analytics heads to Croatia this fall</Tagline>

Tom Penniston, Ph.D., has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to advance learning-analytics projects in Croatia during the 2025–26 academic year. As UMBC DoIT’s Coordinator of Learning Analytics, he helps faculty translate data into inclusive, effective teaching practices. On September 1, he will take that expertise with him as he begins a six-month residency with the University of Zagreb’s Learning Analytics Laboratory at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics in Varaždin, and will remain working remotely in Croatia until August 2026.

During the fellowship, Penniston will test ways to scale course redesign around national and institutional competencies, map how analytics tools are adopted within and between universities, and embed empirically-based approaches in a new international setting. Working alongside Croatian colleagues, he also hopes to deepen his understanding of European Union education policy and seed partnerships that will ultimately benefit UMBC students and faculty.

“I’m humbled, excited, and admittedly a bit anxious,” he says, “but being part of a campus that prizes data-informed teaching makes the leap easier.” He credits CIO Jack Suess, AVP John Fritz, Director Mariann Hawken, and an “exceptionally talented” DoIT team for making this opportunity possible, and notes that his hosts have already “gone out of their way” to welcome his family, which is a kindness that has eased much of his initial anxiety.

“We’re all pleased for and proud of Tom’s selection to serve as a Fulbright Fellow,” says John Fritz, Associate Vice President for Instructional Technology. “He truly is a global citizen with an impressive, eclectic skill set and mindset focused on the value of education to change the trajectory of people’s lives. He will make a wonderful ambassador for what’s best about UMBC and the United States.”

Penniston and his wife, Erin, previously served together in the Peace Corps in Moldova, yet the Fulbright will give their three children their first extended taste of life abroad. “I can’t wait to dive into the data, share what I learn, and bring fresh insights home,” he says, aiming to turn analysis into action on both sides of the Atlantic.

    ---

Requests for support about learning analytics should be submitted to RT.

Improve Course Accessibility with Image Captions & MathJax Formulas in July's Ultra Update

<Tagline>Track who's reading your announcements and more</Tagline>

How do you know if students actually read that important course announcement? What if you could make your content more accessible by adding image captions or rendering complex math more clearly for your STEM students?

The July 2025 release brings features designed to improve visibility into student engagement, better accessibility for images and equations, and tools that streamline how you monitor activity and manage grading. Whether you’re preparing for fall or refining your summer courses, these enhancements make it easier to connect with students and deliver content that works for everyone.

Add Captions to Images for Context and Accessibility

Instructors can now add captions above or below image blocks in Ultra Documents, providing valuable context to visual content embedded in course materials. This simple but impactful change helps students interpret images more effectively, improves comprehension for visual learners, and enhances digital accessibility by supporting screen reader users and reinforcing meaning beyond alternative text.

Image 1. Instructors can go to Edit File Options to add image captions and set positions.

Render Math with Clarity Using MathJax

MathJax will automatically render LaTeX equations when used in the Content Editor, offering a more precise and visually clean presentation of mathematical expressions across supported areas of Ultra. Especially helpful for STEM faculty, this update gives instructors more control over how complex formulas appear and improves the accessibility and readability of math-based content for students.

Image 2: Example of a formula formatted in LaTeX

Track Student Engagement with Announcements

The Announcements page now includes a viewer count, allowing instructors to quickly see which students have opened an announcement and which have not. Clicking the count reveals a list of viewers and non-viewers, with the ability to message students who haven’t read the post. This feature supports more effective communication by helping faculty ensure that important updates, reminders, and instructions are actually reaching students.

<img src="https://help.blackboard.com/sites/default/files/styles/rich_text_medium/public/images/2025-06/announcements_read.png.webp?itok=MSc4-3Dk" alt="Image 3. The list of viewers for an announcement shows that two students have read the announcement and one hasn’t.

Additional updates include:

Instructors can now import QTI v2.1 formatted questions directly into question banks.

A new “No Category” option is now available in the Gradebook, allowing instructors to remove items from a grading category without needing to assign them to another one.

The instructor Activity Page has been redesigned to show new course activity at a glance, including recent updates, grading needs, new messages, and alerts tied to student performance.

Improvements to the pop-out rubric in the Gradebook include a save warning prompt when closing unsaved work and enhanced keyboard navigation using arrow keys and tab controls.

Instructors grading group assignments can navigate through submissions with new Previous and Next buttons in the group header bar.

When you can expect the update

Faculty should see the latest updates in their Ultra courses around July 3-4 2025. The next update to our Ultra test environment will take place on July 8, 2025; release notes are posted to the What's New in Ultra that same week. <Tagline>Track unread discussions & student activity</Tagline>

The June 2025 update to Blackboard Ultra brings a fresh set of enhancements designed to support instructional efficiency, student engagement, and accessible course design. From new question types and grading tools to better visibility into student activity, these updates reflect Ultra’s continued commitment to teaching and learning.

Jumbled Sentence Question Type

Ultra now supports jumbled sentence questions for tests and quizzes, allowing instructors to assess syntax, sequencing, and conceptual structure in a dynamic, interactive way. Distractors can be added to increase challenge, and variables can include letters, numbers, and special characters. Answer options are randomized to ensure fairness, and instructors can optionally use AI assistance to generate question formats.

Image 1: Instructor creates a jumbled sentence question type.

Bulk Category Changes in the Gradebook

Instructors can now bulk update the category associations for gradebook columns via the Item Management page. This streamlines gradebook setup and maintenance, especially in large courses.

Image 2: Instructor is bulk changing the category for multiple selected gradebook items.

Additional updates include:

A new unread post indicator appears at the top of the Ultra course on the Discussions tab to show how many posts are unread.

The Student Activity Log now features a Content Access Filter, making it easier to identify whether and when students accessed specific materials, third-party tools, and LTIs that were previously difficult to track.

Ultra Documents now support resizable divider blocks, which can span up to four columns. These visual elements improve the structure of course content and help chunk information into digestible sections.

Blackboard improved the appearance and responsiveness of Knowledge Checks, making them more visually engaging and easier to interact with across different screen sizes.

The Gradebook supports smoother navigation using arrow keys and enhanced compatibility with screen readers.

When you can expect the update

Faculty should see the latest updates in their Ultra courses around June 5-6 2025. The next update to our Ultra test environment will take place on June 10, 2025; release notes are posted to the What's New in Ultra that same week.
Using Google Doc "Versions" to Detect Student Originality vs. AI Abuse

Note: The following tip was shared as part of a 2/18/25 Faculty Development Center workshop, "Encouraging Academic Integrity in the Era of AI." Please feel free to adapt and make it your own.

Given faculty concerns about AI-assisted or even wholly-authored student papers, faculty could use a simple feature in any Google document, spreadsheet or presentation slide: its version history, which includes a summary or detailed date & time stamp of every addition or edit. As such, the goal is not to detect the presence of AI in student writing, which is currently very difficult due to “false positives,” but more so to detect the absence of originality.

Why & How This Might Work

Unlike the iterative, word-by-word or sentence-by-sentence approach of most original writing, students who use AI or plagiarized material are likely copying & pasting entirely ‘in-tact” content as “whole cloth” blocks, perhaps with minimal or even no changes before submitting as a final draft. If so, requiring students to submit a Google Doc for their paper will contain a version history that faculty can inspect. If version 1 – or any version – contains large blocks of text in a short period of time, one can reasonably assume the work is not original. More importantly, if students know that faculty know there’s a version history that can be inspected – and questioned about – maybe they will think twice.

Issues & Opportunities

A student could just try to emulate iterative authorship, copying one word or sentence at a time -- but likely not in a hurry before a deadline, which is the use case most common to plagiarism. Still, the attempt would result in an ironic, self-inflicted penalty, by forcing the student to take time to cheat to appear not to have done so.

Some students may complain that being required to use a Google Doc inhibits their creative writing process or doesn’t show “offline” musings written by hand or in other editors, including notes made on their mobile devices. However, faculty could say the Google Doc version history allows them to to extend the conditions for how students are assessed over time on any assignment vs at the same time (e.g., answering an essay question on an exam). Also, all Google Docs have mobile apps.

For faculty who are ok with students using AI – as an aid to counter writer’s bloc or if clearly cited in the final version – a version history could be a “teachable moment” for how, where and when to do so. Students could be asked to “name” their versions as AI or “mine” or add a comment to explain where and why they changed any AI output.

Suggested Approach

Create a Google Doc template you ask students to copy and use for their written assignment. You could even make this a Google Assignment for submission in a Learning Management System (LMS) like Blackboard.

Tell students you’ll only accept their assignment if you are a named editor/collaborator (you need editing privileges to view a Google Doc’s version history).

Tell students you reserve the right to randomly inspect the version history of any Google Doc they submit as their own work. You can also require an oral interview to have students explain any version.

FYI: A sample syllabus statement on use of AI by students is below (source: John Fritz, DoIT):

Use of Generative AI
I am exploring how best to use AI to support my teaching, so I am open to students doing so to support their learning – as long as I can distinguish authenticity. Towards this end, all written work (e.g., reflections, final essay, etc.) must be submitted using Google Docs with your UMBC account. Why? This is the only way I can view an original version history. I’m not trying to catch anyone cheating, per se, but if you’d like to use AI to jump start an assignment, I just want to see 1) the prompt you used, 2) any sources you linked or attached to your prompt, and especially 3) how you revised the AI output to make the final submission your own (this is the most important step). As such, when you submit a final version in Blackboard, I’d like this as a .PDF document with an accompanying link to your UMBC Google Doc where it was generated. Note: You can also use Google Docs on your mobile devices if you prefer to start your writing process there.

Related Work (courtesy of Dr. Sarah Bass, Associate Teaching Professor, Chemistry, UMBC)

Using Google Docs to Detect Students’ AI Usage from East Central College

Prove your writing is not AI-generated by tracking changes in your docs: Showing your work is not just for math problems anymore in Popular Science

With increasing AI plagiarism, write your essays on Google Docs! from Reddit discussion amongst students

Why I Use Google Docs to Teach Writing, Especially in the Age of AI blogpost by Steven D.
