UMBC Archiving Unviewed Panopto Videos (01/30/23)

<Tagline>No content will be permanently deleted at this time</Tagline>

To comply with recent changes to product licensing, beginning 01/30/23, all Panopto videos that have not been viewed during the preceding 18 months will be moved to archive storage. If one wishes to retain any content on the production server, they need only access the video(s) once prior to 01/30/23. Alternatively, videos can be restored to our production server to view within 48 hours.

Since UMBC's adoption of Panopto in fall 2018, we have witnessed steady growth in its use until the onset of the pandemic, at which point usage patterns shifted significantly as all instruction moved fully online. To address increased storage demand across its client base, Panopto changed its pricing from a model based on consumption to one based on storage. Our new contract provides roughly 10x more archive storage than production storage (50,500 hours vs 6,000 hours). The latter set of hours represent traditional, on-demand media, whereas the former are held in a separate yet expediently retrievable storage.

Randomize test pages & lock discussions in Jan Ultra update

<Tagline>New option to create model essay response for graders</Tagline>

Test pagination was introduced to Ultra courses last year, creating new ways to present clusters of questions to students that focused on content or reduced cognitive load. In this month's update, test pagination can be randomized for academic integrity. The first page can be locked in place if the content contains test instructions. Additionally, if the Ultra test contains non-question elements, such as text blocks, these can also be locked in place while questions around them are randomized. When combined with question pools, this creates a truly unique testing experience for students.

Instructors can now lock discussions after the due date has passed, setting a discussion to read only. When this feature is enabled, students cannot create, reply to, or edit posts after the due date. However, students with due date accommodations may still interact with discussions until their due date expires.

Image 1: Example of locked discussion (student view)

Another new feature in Ultra courses is the model answer for essay questions. It is an optional feature designed to ensure fair and consistent grading. This feature must be set up when the test is created and only instructors and graders can see the model answer during the grading process. Students can see the model answer when reviewing their results if the test is configured to show correct answers. Students do not see the model answer when they take a test.

The January update also includes:

Modification to who can send Messages in a course:

Students can send messages to all instructors OR to selected course members.
Poll Everywhere Pilot Continues for SP2023

<Tagline>Supporting Engagement with New Audience Response System</Tagline>

DoIT is pleased to announce the availability of Poll Everywhere, which now includes the ability of students, faculty and staff to login with their UMBC credentials. Many UMBC faculty are already leveraging Poll everywhere in their teaching. Through the Fall 2022 term, nearly 2,000 students have participated in at least one Poll Everywhere activity.

Poll Everywhere is an audience response system that presenters can utilize in both face-to-face and online courses instead of traditional, physical clickers. There will be no cost to members of the UMBC community to use this platform.

Poll Everywhere is web-based and can be managed both through a web browser or through the Poll Everywhere application. Poll Everywhere allows you to ask questions of your students, collect their responses by inviting them to respond through a website or phone text link, and share their collective responses in a variety of formats that update in real-time for everyone to see. It encourages all students to engage with learning content in an interactive way, using a tablet, laptop or mobile phone. Poll Everywhere questions can be launched from a browser or integrated in slide presentations such as Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint. Questions and results can be shared with other colleagues as well. Additionally, Poll Everywhere can be used during synchronous, online class meetings since no other hardware is needed, and the response system integrates with Blackboard allowing instructors to assign points and grade responses.

Please note that on Jan. 15, 2023 all existing Poll Everywhere accounts with a UMBC email account will be updated to require UMBC SSO access and that instructors and students will need to access Poll Everywhere via UMBC Single Sign On (SSO).
