Rising college costs brings challenges for students
A new Temple University survey found that thousands of college students today can’t afford basic needs like food and housing, and some even end up homeless.
Check out this feature from the NBC Today Show showcasing different faces and experiences of college student food insecurity, and just how much every bit of help truly matters.
Nationwide, a majority of students who face food insecurity are employed. They are not only working hard in classes, but also spending 20-40 hours a week working to afford their rent, with not much left for routine grocery shopping. To quote from the video: "It's sounds to me like students are coming here (to this food pantry) because they are working their butts off and this is their last hope...It's not an issue of personal responsibility."
It's no longer unusual that you go to a college campus and find a quasi- homeless shelter or food pantry supporting the campus community. Retriever Essentials aims to provide students, faculty, and staff with nonperishable food items to ease the burden of purchasing healthy staples each week. Our belief is that with less stress on how to make ends meet, students are able to focus better on their coursework and reach their fullest academic potential.

Retriever Essentials has an abundance of food available, and we want you to come shopping in our pantry!
Stop by during exam week and hand pack your own bag for the summer. Come once, twice, or as many times as you need. We want to make sure you’re well taken care of during the break.
Are you going to be on campus during the summer for classes? Fear not! Our normal Food Zones will be open and stocked full of bags to be picked up at your convenience.

Retriever Essentials Student Leadership Board- Apply now!
Become a Student Ambassador for Retriever Essentials
The Retriever Essentials team is proud to announce that we will be forming a Student Leadership Board for the 2019-2020 school year!
Our goal is to engage passionate student leaders in a sustainable and impactful way. The main role of the Student Ambassador position is to create and sustain connections
between Retriever Essentials and the broader student body and campus community.
The Retriever Essentials Student Leadership Board contributes to the vision of
Retriever Essentials by promoting Retriever Essentials events, engaging the
UMBC community, and fulfilling essential pantry-operation tasks including
collecting and inventorying donations, and packing and delivering food bags.
Ambassadors can also assist with the design and facilitations of workshops
addressing the stigma of food insecurity, community dinners, food drives, and
other engaging outreach events. This means that it is essential for all
Ambassadors to demonstrate strong leadership skills, to be team-oriented, and
to be willing to contribute to the vision of the Retriever Essentials Advisory
Board.

“In its most recent study, the Hope Center for College Community and Justice
at Temple University polled 86,000 students from 123 colleges.
The study found that 45 percent of
students experienced "food insecurity," which is defined as
"limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe
food, or the ability to acquire such food in a socially acceptable
manner." This includes skipping meals and experiencing hunger due to lack
of funds.
Working during college is not associated with a lower risk
of basic needs insecurity, and neither is receiving the federal Pell Grant; the
latter is in fact associated with higher rates of basic needs insecurity. The survey reported that, of those who experience food insecurity,
over two-thirds of them are employed.”
As national averages of food insecurity increase each year,
Retriever Essentials continues to believe that food insecurity undermines
academic success. Join our fight to tackle food insecurity in our UMBC students
so that they can not only live more comfortably, but show up to class well
prepared in a holistic manner.
We encourage you to have conversations with your coworkers
around basic needs insecurities among college students, not only here at UMBC
but across the nation. What can you do to better support struggling students?

Crime Alert: Police Announcements - Courtney Rd Route
Off-Campus Strong Armed Robbery
Crime Alerts are issued by the UMBC Police to alert the campus community of incidents on or near Campus.
Incident:Robbery (no weapons involved)
Date/time:May 1st, 2019 at approximately 4:15p.m.
On May 1st at approximately 4:20p.m. the UMBC Police were notified by the Baltimore County Police of a robbery that had taken place near Campus. Three suspects approached the victim (non-student) from behind as he was walking in the area of 1150 Linden Avenue and demanded his money and cell phone.
Individuals with any information about the incident should call the Baltimore County Police at 410-887-0872.
Safety Tips:
The UMBC police provides an escort service for anyone who feels unsafe when walking on or near campus. If you would like an escort please call 410-455-5555. If you observe suspicious activity or behavior, contact the police immediately by calling 410-455-5555.
Stay alert and attuned to people and circumstances around you.
Trust your instincts. They are a natural gift that tells you when something is wrong.
