What is Transit Alerts? 
Alerts provide a way for UMBC Transit to communicate with you - the rider in a way that is more reliable, more personal, and more secure than standard email. 
 
Alerts are Important 
When you receive an alert about a detour, inclement weather etc; it usually means that there is something you need to do or know. In some cases, failure to take action on a transit alert may prevent or hinder your transit experience/commute. 
 
Alerts are Personal
 You will not receive alerts that do not apply specifically to you. In contrast to email, you can be sure that an alert holds some relevance to you.

Commuter Assistants needed! Apply by November 28th!
OCSS seeks motivated, intelligent, passionate, hardworking, and dedicated undergraduate students to employ as Commuter Assistants. These students will serve as advocates for commuter students on the UMBC campus. They will also assist with the retention of those students at UMBC through a series of well thought out programs and events. Commuter Assistants will also assist with administrative work within the OCSS office.

So what is a Commuter Assistant? What do they do?

Commuter Assistants 
Commuter Assistants connect commuter students to the greater campus community. OCSS, along with Commuter Assistants, work to prevent commuter students from experiencing the age-old commuter tale of simply going to class and going home. With several events every semester, our Commuter Assistants organize fun, yet educational events where students can socialize with other commuters, connect with staff and faculty, as well as learn about on or off-campus resources.

Commuter Assistant Duties
  • Support Off-Campus Student Services by working in the front office weekly.
  • Serve as a role model to off-campus and on-campus students. 
  • Organize programming and services as part of the Commuter Assistant team and collateral project.
  • Assist in development of a sense of community among commuter students.
  • Assist with other Off-Campus Student Services events as needed, including, but not limited to Commuter Week, Commuter Connections, and Welcome Week.

Commuter Assistants must maintain a 2.5GPA prior to and during employment with OCSS.

Training
OCSS Commuter Assistants must attend training sessions prior to the spring semester. Student staff will be expected to assist during Welcome Week- the last weekend before classes. Student staff will work an average of 5-10 hours per week, as well as attend weekly team specific meetings on Fridays at 12pm. If you are unable to attend the training or meet this time commitment, you cannot serve as an OCSS Commuter Assistant.

UMBC's Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS) is partnering with Tabrizi's Restaurant on the Baltimore Harbor to serve nearly 200 veterans who are homeless, living in poverty, elderly, disabled, or otherwise deserving of a delicious meal.  In celebration of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, veterans will spend an evening on the harbor enjoying a fine meal, entertainment, a parting gift, and chance to win one of the dozens of raffle prizes!

We are looking for UMBC students who are veterans or veteran-affiliated to act as volunteers for this event.  While volunteers will be asked to help with serving food and drinks and cleaning up, they will also get the chance to sit and enjoy a meal with veterans. Transportation from UMBC is provided and there is free parking is available at the restaurant. We ask that volunteers commit to the entire event.

The Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry, in partnership with Retriever Essentials and the Mosaic Center, will be hosting a forum discussion tonight from 5:30pm-7p in the Skylight Lounge on "Respecting the Dignity of Every Human Being."

The panel will include:


We're living through a time when respect seems to be disappearing.  Come and hear religious and cultural perspectives on how we can and should cultivate respect for our neighbors, even when we may disagree with their views and their actions.  

Respect is the cornerstone of justice. Let's work together to create a more inclusive UMBC community.
