Are you struggling to eat while you're on campus? Email retrieveressentials@umbc.edu to see if you qualify.

Did you have extra meals left on your meal plan last semester? Consider signing up to donate 5 or 10 meals from your meal plan to Save a Swipe to help a classmate in need. Last semester 280 meals were donated which were able to feed 23 food insecure students. Help us reach and surpass those numbers this semester! Consider doing your part in helping Retriever Essentials bridge the gap between hunger on campus and academic success by signing up to donate online from now until 2/15/19.

Donated meals will be distributed to students in need through Counseling Services to be used in True Grit’s. 225 Block meal plans will have 5 or 10 meals deducted when you sign up. Recurring meals per week (Flexible 10, 14, Terrific 12, Savvy 16) will have one meal deducted each week starting February 25th-May 6th. Ultimate Meal Plan holders will be donating their Friday lunch meal, students on the Ultimate will not be able to use a meal from 11:00 am - 4:00pm on Friday. Ultimate plan holders can still use their flex, Retriever Dollars or food funds. By donating these meals you agree to this form, these meals are non-revocable once submitted. You may sign up during the beginning of the semester until the drop/add date (February 15th, Spring 2019).

Retriever Essential - Free Non-Perishable

<Tagline>Food & Free winter clothing (coats, hats, scarves & gloves)</Tagline>

What is Retriver Essential all about?

Many in our UMBC, local, and regional communities, along with people across the country, are still feeling the effects of the partial federal government shutdown that ended this past weekend with enactment of legislation to fund the federal government through February 15. As we begin the new semester, there are UMBC students, alumni, and families under financial stress. As we continue to hope for a prompt resolution that will avert another shutdown and fund the federal government through the end of the fiscal year, we ask everyone in our community to consider those affected by the shutdown and what they might do to help. We know Retrievers are generous people who give their time and other resources to help those in need. Please consider donating to Retriever Essentials, which aims to combat food insecurity in our UMBC community.

If you are a student having an issue with having enough food to eat, please be aware that Retriever Essentials has six (6) locations on campus where you can pick up a FREE bag of non-perishable food. Please visit our website at retrieveressentials.umbc.edu to see the locations.

If you are unable to afford or it is a hardship for you to purchase a warm winter coat, hat, scarves or gloves, please contact Julie Rosenthal julier@umbc.edu to arrange a time to pick up any of these items from our "Coat Closet". The Coat Closet is available by appointment only.

Free breakfast, lunch and snacks are available at the Women's Center in Commons. The Women's Center is open to everyone.

Grocery store food coupons are available at Off Campus Student Services. If you purchase an item on sale and use a food coupon, you'll save even more money.

If you need assistance with other issues, please contact Ms. Lauren Kataja at lakataja@umbc.edu

Last semester Retriever Essentials gave away 85 coats, (70 to graduate students). We are able to reach all graduate students because the GSA sent an email out to all of their students.

Great News Story: Homelessness on campus

Thank you!!
