Tonight we discussed Fermi's Paradox, the question asked by Enrico Fermi of why, if there is life out there and it is easy to make, have we not yet learned of this life or have interacted with it? We also learned about Frank Drake's equation, the equation of the number of civilizations with which we can communicate per year. We talked about the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) and the history of the program, which listens for messages from space as well as sends them out. Then we talked about methods of detecting planets and the Kepler Space Telescope, which has found 3200 planets since 2009. We also talked about stellar formation in terms of planets and life. We discussed the Kardashev scale, which has different levels of civilization distinguished by how many resources a civilization has harnessed (the highest level being a type III, which has harnessed all of the resources of a galaxy). The last part of the talk was about the possible reasons we have not discovered life outside of our planet. Lastly, we went upstairs to tour the observatory.
