The National Convention of the National Society of Black Engineers was held March 23-27, 2011 in St. Louis, MO. Over 25 UMBC students, including several alumni members, travelled to attend the conference, which boasted an attendance of over 3,000 students and professionals.
Nateé Johnson (Mech. E, Meyerhoff Scholar) excelled academically and won first place in the Oral Presentation of the Technical Research Exhibition. She presented research conducted at a summer internship at University of Wisconsin Madison on "Synthesis and Annealing of Copper (II) Sulfide Nanocrystals."
UMBC also sent a team of 4 students to compete in the International Consulting Design Olympiad, an engineering design competition that pairs North American chapters with international chapters to devise a sustainable solution to a challenging engineering problem in the developing world. The team garnered recognition for best paper on their project in Using Slow Sand Filtration to Provide Clean Water to Rural Ethiopian Communities. Team members were Yvonne Okafor (CWIT Affiliate), Fri-atsoh Achirimofor (Meyerhoff Scholar), Matthew Thompson (Meyerhoff Scholar) and Nateé Johnson. All members were Mechanical Engineering students, and with the exception of Nateé, are in their first or second year at UMBC.
Several NSBE students were honored at the Annual Golden Torch Awards for outstanding academic performance. Recipients of NSBE Scholarships were Jasmine Jones (CS/INDS, Meyerhoff Scholar), Sylvester Ezeani (CS, NSA Scholar), Fri-atsoh Achirimofor, and Matthew Thompson, and Nateé Johnson.
Congratulations to our members on their distinguished accomplishments!
