<Title>Undergraduate Research Opportunities</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>i) The <strong>MIT Summer Research Program</strong> (MSRP) seeks to promote the value of graduate education; to improve the research enterprise through increased diversity; and to prepare and recruit the best and brightest for graduate education at MIT.<br><br>MSRP began in 1986 as an institutional effort to address the issue of underrepresentation of African Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Americans, and Puerto Ricans in engineering and science in the United States. Today, this program seeks to identify talented sophomores, juniors, and non-graduating seniors who might benefit from spending a summer on MIT’s campus, working in a research laboratory under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers who are MIT faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and advanced graduate students. Students who participate in this program will be better prepared and motivated to pursue advanced degrees, thereby helping to sustain a rich talent pool in critical areas of research and innovation.</p><p>For more information and to apply (Deadline is January 25th, 2013)  <a href="http://odge.mit.edu/undergraduate/msrp/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>http://odge.mit.edu/undergraduate/msrp/</span></a><br></p><p><br></p><p>ii) The <strong>Columbia University IGERT on Optical Techniques for Actuation, Sensing, and Imaging of Biological Systems</strong> (BioIGERT), a National Science Foundation IGERT program, will support outstanding undergraduates as Summer Research Fellows for the period from June 2 through August 3, 2013. This program provides a $4000 stipend for each successful candidate and free campus housing (worth $2700) in which you are expected to reside. Students benefit in having a community of scholars in which to learn and to share research with.<br><br>This intensive summer research experience provides mentoring and research experiences while allowing scholars to preview graduate school life. <Title>6th Annual Winter Student Leadership Retreat</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>You are invited to participate in the <span>6</span><sup>th</sup> Annual Winter Student Leadership Retreat. The retreat is sponsored by the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland (UMCP).</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The purpose of the retreat is to provide an opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate who are majoring or who are planning to major in engineering and/or computer science to build their career, professional, and leadership skills; as well as to network with corporations and student leaders from 4-year colleges/universities and 2-year community colleges in the Washington-Baltimore-Annapolis area. The 2011 retreat included students from: George Mason University, George Washington University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, Montgomery College, Morgan State University, Prince George’s Community College, UMBC, and UMCP.</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The retreat provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to network with students from local colleges and universities who are studying engineering and/or computer science.  The retreat will be held January 21-22, 2012 (this is the weekend before classes begin at UMCP, UMBC, Morgan, Johns Hopkins).  The retreat will be held at the Sheraton Columbia in Columbia, MD.  The retreat is a two-day retreat with one (1) overnight stay.  There is no cost to students to participate in the retreat.  Students who participate have to commit to participating in all retreat activities over the course of the two days.  Transportation is provided, additional information will be forthcoming to students who participate. </span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The retreat is funded by the CIA, W. L.     <div class="html-content"><span><span>The Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) Student Council &amp; Information Systems Council of Majors (ISCOM) will be hosting MAJOR Decisions: Demystifying COEIT Majors </span><span>on <strong>October 19th from 6-8 pm </strong>in the </span><span><strong>University Center 310 &amp; 312.</strong></span><div><span><strong><br></strong></span></div><div><em><span><strong>"</strong></span><strong><span>Not sure if you want to major in IT or Engineering??  Come and talk to members of the IT and Engineering community in a casual atmosphere where you can ask questions and talk with members of each of these communities to help you decide whether IT and Engineering is right for you.</span><span>"</span></strong></em></div><div><strong><span><br></span></strong></div><div><div><span>This is a chance to find more details about the majors within COEIT - chemical and biochem, civil and environmental, computer science and electrical, information systems, and mechanical engineering(!).</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>There are two components to this event: an information session (6-7pm) led by faculty that breaks down each major in COEIT, followed by a social component (7-8pm) that will include students, faculty, and light refreshments. The purpose of this event is to help students understand the differences between all the majors and help undecided students determine which major is best suited for them.
