2023 Retriever Talks will be LIVE once again! How exciting! Here is what you need to know:
- LIVE event in the Fine Arts Recital Hall on May 17th, 2023, at 10:00a.m.-12:00p.m.
- This speaker development program is open to faculty and staff of all levels in our community.
- Proposal submissions are due December 1st, 2022.

Want to help get ready-to-microwave meals in our pantry for folks in our community who need them most? Sign up to pack to-go meals at True Grits and bring them to Retriever Essentials!
This program is in partnership with Food Recovery Network and Campus Dining. We will be doing this every Monday through Thursday, so keep an eye out for future signups as well.

Warm clothes needed for Retriever Essentials' Coat Closet!
Retriever Essentials is currently collecting donations for our Winter Coat Closet! These items are going fast and we still have many community members on our campus who could use a warm coat, hat, scarf, and pair of gloves. Please consider going through your closet and donating anything you no longer wear!
Please read this before donating:
Donations will be accepted in the following locations during open hours:
- The Essential Space, RAC 235, open MW 12-6 and TuTh 10-4
- Shriver Center, Public Policy Building 1st Floor, open M-F 8:30-5
Please consider the dignity of your UMBC peers and community members before donating. Make sure items are

good shape before donating.
We are accepting coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and sweaters.

If anyone has large ziploc bags (like freezer bags) that they are not using, I have a use in mind for them. I would like to encourage members of the UMBC community to re-purpose such bags for collecting food scraps produced when they are not in the vicinity of a compost collection bin and then emptying it daily, washing, and re-using the bag each time they are on campus or out and about.
Pre-used bags are totally fine. If you have any that are not in use, I will gratefully take them.
I plan to demonstrate this simple concept at the Fall Sustainability Fair on Monday, 10/24 (11:30-1:30 PM at Commons Main Street). I'm planning to make stencils that people can take home and use to customize their bags, and/or share and inspire other decoration ideas.
I imagine many people will have bags at home they can use. Reuse in general is key; the idea is to dedicate one (or more) for this purpose to help make it a habit. But I'd like to have some on hand people can take.

Reminder: REACH kickoff tomorrow @12 - you're invited!
Join us tomorrow from 12-1 for our Retriever Essentials Action Committee Hub (REACH) Fall kickoff meeting!
We'll be giving some updates on Retriever Essentials and then dividing into subcommittees to start work on some important projects we have planned for this semester. Meetings will be held once per month, with subcommittees scheduling additional meetings according to their needs.
Subcommittees for Fall 2022 will be:
- Events
- Nutrition
- Sustainability
- For those who cannot commit to a subcommittee, we will have an alternate activity to get your feedback and ideas for our programs.
All levels of experience are welcome. You are encouraged to fill out our
interest form to receive further communications about this group. The meeting will be held in
Webex. We are looking forward to seeing you there!
