Fulfilling the PROMISE
Hi Folks,
This is highly recommended if you will be in Maryland on 19th of August. $25 dollar registration fee is refundable once you attend the event or cancel early enough. I will urge you register as soon as possible, the email invite for the rest of the students will be sent in a week or in two weeks time.

A University System of Maryland Professional Development Event for Graduate Students and Postdocs from underserved backgrounds
You are invited to attend the 2023 PROMISE Summer Success Institute (SSI)! This conference, organized by PROMISE program volunteers from across the University System of Maryland, will be held in person at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Campus, in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building on Saturday, August 19, 2023, from 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. SSI provides professional development, encouragement, motivation, career advice, peer support, and camaraderie, particularly for underrepresented graduate students and postdocs in STEM fields.
This year, we are celebrating 20 years of the PROMISE SSI program! Our conference theme, "Fulfilling the PROMISE," will celebrate and honor the amazing work of PROMISE over two decades. We will have inspirational keynotes, including a welcome from PROMISE founders Dr. Janet Rutledge and Dr. Renetta Tull, concurrent sessions featuring panels of doctorates now working as educators, as federal agency employees, in industry, or as change-makers working in science writing, science policy, and public health. We will also have workshops to help you build skills to launch your independent academic career and create inclusive environments. Importantly, this year we are bringing back regional alumni; please join them at 8:30 AM for breakfast to network. We aim to help you connect, understand the work you can do with your graduate degree, and grow skills and fulfillment, personally and professionally. We hope you join us! |

Deposit policy/agreement:
By getting your ticket to attend this year's 20th anniversary of Summer Success Institute (SSI) you agree to be charged a $25.00 deposit per ticket. This deposit payable via credit card or debit card, is collected when you reserve your ticket online. Upon attending the event, this deposit will be reimbursed (minus the transaction fee). Please make sure to check-in in at the registration table at the venue. Any cancellations must be made at least 72 hours prior to the event to get a reimbursement. |

Join us for "Grad Student Grant Garage." We'll differentiate funding types, walk through typical proposal components, consider approaches to proposal development, and discuss funder perspectives, with an emphasis on social science funding opportunities.
The session will be led by
Angie Schaffer, a Baltimore-based grants and development consultant who has proposed and managed grants funded by federal U.S. agencies (including the Department of State and the Department of Education), foreign governments, the Maryland State Department of Education, and many local and national corporate funders and foundations.

End of Semester celebration!!!
We celebrate small and big wins
Congratulations to those who have completed their finals, and good luck to those who will take theirs this week.
Nigeria Graduate Student Association will be celebrating the end of the semester and graduation for our members on the 27th of May, 2023.
The scheduled events are as follows;
(1) Hiking
Take off time: 8 AM from UMBC
Hiking venue: Sugarloaf Mountain.
Mode of transportation: Carpooling
(2) Cookout
Time: 4 PM
Venue: Ericsson Field UMBC
Discussion continues on our WhatsApp platform. Please feel free to contact me by email at ug86132@umbc.edu or by mobile number: 4435708496 if you want to be part of any of the events but are outside the WhatsApp platform. This will enable me to communicate any last-minute change.

The conference will start on the 17th at 8:30 am with breakfast and registration; and a plenary session featuring a special panel by UMBC students (both undergraduate and graduate) at 9:15 am - 10:30 am; and an opening ceremony; which will be followed by a talk by the first keynote speaker at 11 am - 12 noon; and lunch (African delicious meal) at 12-1 pm. The Opening Session will take place at UC 312. There will be panel sessions on the 17th (ending at 4 pm) and 18th (ending at 2 pm). The conference will close with a Banquet of African food and music at 7-10 pm on the 18th, UC Ballroom. See the attached Speakers' Flyer.

Call for Proposals for Graduate Student Research Fellowships
Hi Folks,
I hope the preparation for your finals is progressing well? Please see the opportunity below from our faculty advisor Prof Gloria Chuku and apply.
The Dresher Center for the Humanities invites applications for two Graduate Student Research Fellowships for the 2022-23 academic year. One fellowship will be awarded for Fall 2023 and one for Spring 2024. Funding is intended to support and promote promising humanities research by graduate students at UMBC.
The fellowships are open to all UMBC doctoral and master's level students working on humanities-related research projects that will culminate in a dissertation or master's thesis. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board.
