<Title>Now Accepting Applicants for the David W. Smith Scholarship</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The scholarship seeks to honor the memory of David W. Smith, an extraordinary singer and a brilliant and dedicated professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  In his short time on earth, David touched so many lives and inspired so many people, students and colleagues alike.  It is the mission of this foundation to create a living legacy of the artistry and humanity David possessed so his spirit can continue to be a powerful force in the UMBC community.</p><p>To be eligible, applicants must be a Music Major with a concentration in Vocal Performance entering the second semester of their freshman year OR second semester at UMBC after transferring.  This scholarship is awarded on the basis of talent followed closely by need and is available for a maximum of two (2) years pending a review after the first year receiving it.  Students who have already been awarded full scholarships are not eligible to apply.  A recommendation from the student’s major teacher will be needed for the application.</p><p>For more information, please visit the <a href="http://www.davidwsmithvocalscholarship.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">scholarship website</a>.</p></div>

<Title>UMBC Partnership with BSO Academy Music Educators Track</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The <a href="https://www.bsomusic.org/education-community/programs-for-adults/academy-programs/bso-academy-week/music-educator-track.aspx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">BSO Academy Week Music Educator Track</a> is an excellent professional development opportunity for music educators currently teaching in schools and/or non-traditional settings, teaching artists, and/or students pursuing a career in music education.</p><p>Designed to invigorate music educators by focusing on improving musicianship, performance techniques, conducting skills, improvisation, arranging, practice techniques, and ensemble skills, participants are immersed in the world of the orchestra as you play, learn, and perform side-by-side with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.</p><p><strong>UMBC Graduate Credit</strong></p><p>Through a unique collaboration between The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and UMBC’s Department of Music, BSO Music Educator Track participants also have the option to concurrently enroll in a graduate summer music course.</p><p><strong>MUSIC 613 - BSO Academy for Instrumental Music Educators (3 graduate credits)</strong></p><p><em>Students study, rehearse, and perform orchestral music side-by-side with the Baltimore Symphony, participate in small group sectional rehearsals led by artist faculty, and complete workshops taught by BSO musicians and UMBC music faculty in a variety of applicable topics for instrumental music educators.</em></p><p>To enroll in MUSC 613, participants must first be accepted into the BSO Music Educators Academy and be eligible for non-degree graduate admission to the university.</p><p>For more information regarding costs and receiving UMBC credit for the academy please visit, the <a href="http://music.umbc.edu/degrees-certificates/bso-academy/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">BSO Academy page on the Department of Music website</a>.</p></div>

<Title>UMBC Student Composition to be Performed at N_SEME 2016</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Samuel Winnie's (B.A. in Composition '16) <em>Romani Lachrymose</em> for solo cello and electronics has been selected to be performed at the <a href="http://nseme.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Student Electronic Music Event (N_SEME)</a>.  The piece will be performed at the conference by Chanel Whitehead (B.A. in Performance '17), who premiered the work in Fall 2015.  N_SEME is an annual conference devoted to showcasing electronic and electroacoustic compositions and research by undergraduate and graduate students from around the country.  <span>Featured presentations at N_SEME 2016 include a keynote lecture by internationally award-winning composer Panayotis Kokoras and concerts by acclaimed electroacoustic musicians Elizabeth McNutt and Andrew May.  This year's N_SEME will be held at the University of Oklahoma's School of Music in Norman, OK on March 26-27.    </span><div><br></div><div><div><em>Romani Lachrymose </em>was composed in 2013 as a soundtrack to a dance by UMBC student Rachel Lum and later adapted for live cello and electronics. <span>The piece for solo cello and electronics is an exploration of the expressive and improvisatory nature of the Romani style. This tone poem on the concept of lachrymose places listeners directly into the mind of someone spiraling into depression. The use of electronics in this piece adds a new dimension, engulfing listeners in sounds of lament as achievable only on the cello.  <em>Romani Lachrymose </em>was premiered by Chanel Whitehead on November 6, 2015 on Samuel Winnie's senior composition recital in the Linehan Concert Hall at UMBC.  </span></div></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Congratulations to Samuel and Chanel on this fantastic opportunity! </span></div></div>

<Title>Joey Mitchell, '09 Music Alum, to Tour NY with Swampcandy</Title>
