Dale Gray Completes Music Internship with WorshipNOW

This summer, Dale Gray (Music Composition '21) had the privilege of interning at a budding Christian music publishing company called WorshipNOW. He worked as a music engraver, meaning he entered, edited, and formatted previously written scores for publication. His primary responsibility was digitizing and formatting PDF scores of hymns from composers, but he transcribed unpublished works. Dale describes his internship, "It was so awesome to get feedback from industry leading composers and songwriters on my transcriptions, notations, and formatting. And once they approved, the piece was ready to be published! It was such a great experience, I learned so much, and I enjoyed every moment of it. I hope to someday get a job as a music engraver with some company, if not that one."

Alumna Christie Finn Releases New Recording

Alumna Christie Finn released a new recording of Christopher Trapani's Waterlines with the Ictus ensemble. The work was written as a response to 2005 disaster, Hurricane Katrina. Below is an excerpt from the composer's program notes:

‘That immediate sensation of shock after the storm is still emblazoned in my mind,’ Trapani, a native of New Orleans, recalled: ‘the fear of losing everything from the concrete to the intangible, from houses and photo albums to cultural traditions.’ As he sifted through vintage recordings of Southern music recalling the earlier cataclysm of the 1927 Mississippi River Flood, Trapani began to conceive a substantial work commemorating Katrina and paying tribute to Trapani’s Southern musical heritage. The result is Waterlines, a song cycle in which Trapani channels the cataclysm into a brilliant celebration of an extraordinary musical culture.

The recording can be downloaded here.

Congrats to Christie!

Karena Ingram (Music '15) Receives ACO Commission

Karena Ingram (Music '15) was awarded a commission recently with the American Composer's Orchestra to contribute to the innovative online programming BMI has initiated to continue its support for the arts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The work, No Air is a lament
for the black lives lost at the hands of police brutality and racism in America,
as well as the reflection of grief, frustration, and perseverance in the
community. George Floyd’s last words of "I can't breathe" were the
same last words of Eric Garner in 2014, Javier Ambler and Derrick Scott in
2019, and Manuel Ellis in March of 2020, in which they all faced the same
injustice and murder. "Black Lives Matter" is not a radical
statement; it is a cry of justice and equality from people who have been
oppressed for generations. No air is our story of strength and power, beginning
with the lament of those we've lost, and ending with the lament of those we may
lose if our society does not change for the better.

The commission and online premiere performance of No Air is made possible by American

Dept. of Music Receives Charlesmead Award

Spearheaded by faculty members Janice Jackson and Daniel Pesca and department chair Linda Dusman, in collaboration with Mrs. Alethia B. Starke, Executive Director of The Carter School, and Dr. Jarl Hulbert, President of the William Knabe Piano Institute, this partnership will fully fund the musical education of ten students, ages 8–14, from the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of Baltimore. Classes will take place at The Carter School, which the Charlesmead jurors characterized as a “a key community and spiritual hub.” Exchange between the campuses will run both ways: students in the Music Department at UMBC will have the opportunity to observe teaching, and Carter students will regularly attend concerts and receptions at UMBC. In the summers, Carter students will participate in a Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) on campus, which will run concurrently with the Knabe Piano Institute and Piano Competition. “The summer activities of the Knabe Institute attract pianists from around the globe,” says Dr. Pesca, “so we are conceiving this week of activities in the summer as a big celebration that brings together Carter students, UMBC students and faculty, and international pianists in our beautiful facilities on campus.”
