So You Want To Be An Entrepreneur, Really? Recap

<Tagline>Matt gives his story and advise to young entrepreneurs</Tagline>

Matt Tormollen, Executive Vice President/General Manager, Avalara, Inc and serial entrepreneur, shared his experiences and gave solid entrepreneurial advice to the UMBC community.

If you missed this informative and exciting workshop be sure to listen to the unedited audio of the workshop available below.

Matt began introducing himself and talking about his experiences as an entrepreneur who is 4/4 is startups with successful exits, which is pretty impressive! Below are 8 tips/principles of successful companies he shared.

Tough personal decisions separate winners and losers

Sometimes in order to be successful an entrepreneur needs to “reshuffle the deck” and bring in new people. This can sometimes require them to make tough personal decisions especially if this means letting go of people you’ve worked with for a long time. It is important to set expectations for all your employees while always thinking of the future of your company and what’s best for it.

Define company culture from day one

It is important to establish a company culture early and live up to the mission and core values. If you can live your brand your employees will follow suit. It is also important to consider this culture when hiring. If a potential employee does not fit the culture they should not be hired.

You are a leader ALL the time

When you are an entrepreneur you are a leader all the time and all eyes are on you. You control company moral and set the mood. You can never have a bad day or your employees will follow suit.

Be careful when sharing intimate information with internal people

It is important to have an open dialog with employees but you also need to be careful with what information you choose to divulge. This is where mentors and outside consultants come in. They give objective feedback to problems you wouldn’t get otherwise. There are many organizations that help entrepreneur establish mentoring relationship. An example is the Young Professional Organization.

Exude positivity and resilience

Sometimes this is difficult but it is necessary. Matt’s main saying is that you must “make lemonade out of lemons.” There will always be challenges that arise and you need to make sure you can stay positive throughout these challenges.

Have personal accountability

Integrity and personal accountability are some of the most important things to have as an entrepreneur. You need to be able to finish what needs to be done in an efficient manner. And if you can’t then you must be confident enough to ask for help.

Product development

When it came to product development Matt suggested asking yourself questions like what value am I bring to my customer, how you can introduce it into the market, and how do I quantify the value of my product to make a profit? After you answer these questions you can concentrate on financing.

Financing

After you answer these questions you can concentrate on financing. Bootstrapping, when you develop the product yourself, is how you can make the most money since you do not have to share profits with investors. However, if you need investors you need to consider two things. You should always be in control (meaning you own more than 50% of the company). You also want to ask yourself, what can I get out of this relationship besides money? You must not forget that an investor is also a partner.

Faculty and Staff Shelfies

<Tagline>Take a shelfie for National Library Week</Tagline>

The staff of the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery will celebrate National Library Week from April 12–18, 2015. This observance, first sponsored in 1958 by the American Library Association, recognizes the contributions of libraries nationwide and promotes their use and support. Members of the library’s Social Media Users Team would like to invite you to participate in a fun promotion that highlights the campus community: faculty/staff shelfies.

What do you mean shelfie? These pictures, similar to the selfie phenomenon, feature a person or library’s bookshelf/shelves (please see here). For our promotion, we’re asking participants to submit a picture of themselves in the A.O.K. Library holding their favorite book or most recent publication; photos taken outside of the library (e.g. by an office bookshelf) will also be accepted. We will post the images to our various social media accounts along with biographical information and any comments you wish to include. This is a great opportunity to participate in an exciting promotion while also publicizing your own scholarship—whether it is a book, journal article, or audiovisual production!

If you would like to participate in this promotion, please send your image and comments by April 10th, 2015 to Nicole Smith at n21@umbc.edu. We will notify you if your photo is used and where it has been posted. Any format is accepted, even camera phone photos—these do not need to be professional headshots. You can also set an appointment with one of the Social Media Users Team members to have your photo taken in the library.

Thank you for supporting the library, and don’t forget to follow our social media accounts (listed below)!

Come join us for a discussion with Jamie McDonald on how today's social entrepreneurs are innovating, creating economic value, and changing the world - all at the same time.

This workshop will be held on April 8 at 12:00 pm in entreSpace, located in the old Theater Building next to the commons garage room 139.

About Jamie:

Jamie McDonald is the Chief Giving Officer of Network for Good, the nation’s largest online charitable giving platform.
GiveCorps is online software connecting non-profits and educational institutions to digital givers.

Jamie's professional mission is to spur people to give, act and innovate on behalf of communities and causes. She writes and speaks about online engagement and giving, next generation philanthropy, and the rise of the millennial generation as a force for changing communities. In 2013, she led BMore Gives More, the movement that raised $5.7 million in a day on Giving Tuesday and earned Baltimore the #MostGenerousCity in America honor by The 92nd St Y and the UN Foundation.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Jamie was a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown, where she enjoyed a 16-year career, and led several groups within investment banking, including the Private Equity Coverage Group, managing relationships with Alex. Brown’s venture capital and leveraged buyout firm clients.

Jamie places a high priority on civic engagement. She led the $8MM capital campaign and has been a longtime Board member of the Center for Urban Families. She has previously served on the boards of The Leadership, the Family Tree, Live! Baltimore, and The Fund for Educational Excellence, among others. She was the founding President of the Board of Directors of the Police Athletic League (PAL) of Baltimore City. She is a past co-chair of the Tocqueville Campaign ($10,000 gifts) for the United Way of Central Maryland and sat on the national board of the Keewaydin Foundation.

Other local volunteer activities include serving as a member of then-Mayor Martin O’Malley’s Economic Development Transition Committee.

Jamie was named an Innovator of the Year in 2012. She is a graduate of the 1997 class of the Greater Baltimore Committee’s Leadership program. She was named one of Baltimore Business Journal’s “40 under 40.”
