This Thursday, a lively evening of campus art events

With over 150 culture events programmed on campus throughout the school year, there are always many enriching events to experience at UMBC. This Thursday promises to be an especially exciting artistic evening with three events scheduled!

The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture hosts an opening reception from 5 - 7 p.m. with the artist and curator of Gun Show, an exhibition of more than 100 life-size replicas of assault rifles created by artist David Hess from "rescued" objects. Hess intends for this project to foster dialogue about one of the most volatile issues of our time -- gun violence. A short film by alum and award-winning filmmaker Richard Chisolm ’82, interdisciplinary studies, about this ongoing project premieres as part of the exhibition.

The exhibition Man, Image, Idea: Photographs of Men from the Mark Rice Collection, which opened August 30 and runs through December 12 at the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery, will be open until 8 p.m. this Thursday, and each Thursday for the duration of the exhibition. The exhibition presents the male form in 62 photographs by many photographers including two from Baltimore, Connie Imboden and Jose Villarrubia.

And at 8 p.m. the Department of Music presents the first of two exciting concerts featuring British cellist, bass-baritone, and actor Matthew Sharp in the acoustically superb concert hall on campus. Sharp will sing Schubert’s Der Erlkönig and Jacques Brel’s Chanson des Vieux Amants and be joined by UMBC string faculty for the celestial and unsurpassed chamber work, Schubert’s Cello Quintet. This concert as well as Death's Cabaret – A Love Story on Friday, September 8 are FREE for UMBC students (a treat, professional concert usually charge a fee for student tickets.)

Invited artists and speakers as well as faculty and students in the arts, humanities and social sciences will present more than 65 events this fall on campus, ranging from exhibitions to performances to lectures. These are all open to the campus community as well as the public. To stay up-to-date on all of these events in one list visit the Arts & Culture Calendar at artscalendar.umbc.edu.

Music, song and storytelling from beyond the limits

<Tagline>Thursday, September 7 and Friday, September 8</Tagline>

The Department of Music presents two enthralling concerts this week in the world-class Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall featuring guest artist Matthew Sharp, an internationally recognized classical artist. Sharp is a multidisciplinary artist and will perform as cellist, bass-baritone and actor over the course of his engagement at UMBC. Both concerts are free for UMBC students with their ID.

On Thursday, September 7, Sharp sings Schubert’s Der Erlkönig and Jacques Brel’s Chanson des Vieux Amants and will be joined by UMBC string faculty for the celestial and unsurpassed chamber work, Schubert’s Cello Quintet.

“Jacques Brel found Schubert’s C major Quintet inspirational – he listened to it when he wrote,” comments Matthew Sharp. “I’ve always felt that their music shared a raw, unguarded, ‘leap from the precipice’ quality. So, we’re including two of their iconic songs — one where terror and death rips through the veil between fantasy and reality, the other in which love is both chains and salvation — as both a context for this late masterpiece and as a prelude to the cabaret concerto on Friday, September 8, Death’s Cabaret — A Love Story.”

Death’s Cabaret — A Love Story is a concerto for the 21st century: a unique and thrilling marriage of the 19th century concerto form with the grime and sensuality of cabaret — both an innovation and a re-invention of an ancient tradition. Dangerous, intimate, raw and virtuosic, it promises to be an unforgettable night!

Matthew Sharp is recognized as as an innovative artist working in music and across disciplines. He studied cello with Boris Pergamenschikow in Cologne, voice with Ulla Blom in Stockholm and English at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was taken to Jacqueline du Pré when he was 12, Galina Vishnewskaya when he was 18, and studied chamber music with the Amadeus Quartet. Sharp has appeared as solo performer with the RPO, LPO, RLPO, CBSO, Orchestra of Opera North, SCO, EUCO, ESO, Manchester Camerata, Orchestra of the Swan, Orchestra X, Arensky Chamber Orchestra, and Ural Philharmonic. He has recorded for Sony, EMI, Decca, Naxos, Somm, NMC, Avie and Whirlwind and has appeared in recital as both cellist and singer at Wigmore Hall, SBC and Salle Gaveau.

The Department of Music presents a concerto for the 21st century -- a cabaret concerto.
