Here are some final updates regarding the end of the semester

MTC BOARD ELECTIONS:

The end of the spring semester means that the club will vote on new E-board members. During Friday's GBM, potential board members will give their speech on why you should vote for them to be a board member. 

If you are interested in running for E-Board, please sign up using the google form below. Your submission is due Friday at 1.

Are you not doing anything this upcoming Friday? Do you want an excuse to dress up and eat good food? Join us for MTC's annual prom! This year the theme is enchanted forrest! Prom is from 7-10pm in the ACC. Let us know if you don't know how to get there and one of us will help you!

As a way to remember those leaving us, MTC hosts one final sendoff. If you are graduating this year or transferring to a different school, come to Flat Tuesday's on  Monday the 29th from 6-7:30 for one last karaoke. Everyone is welcome to come, but karaoke is only for those who won't be joining us next spring!

The way that the application process works is that you apply with a show. Good things to keep in mind are cast size and cost!

LEGALLY BLONDE

Our production (as most of you all know) is coming up this weekend! Please come out to support our club and invite literally everybody to join you! Shows are April 19th (7 PM), April 20th (1 PM - understudies & 7 PM), and April 21st (1 PM) in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. Tickets are FREE for UMBC students and $7 for the general public and can be purchased here or at tickets.umbc.edu. Our show poster is also attached to this email. Hope to see everybody there! 

Executive Board Elections

Elections to be on the 2024-25 Executive Board for MTC are happening very soon! To apply to be on the board, you should fill out this form with your official speech for the election. Any position is available to any students, except President (only open to people who have been on the board one semester before, unless no one like this applies). 

The current E-Board created presentations about each role for you all, which can be found here! Feel free to send us any questions or talk to a current E-board member.

Speeches will be given to the club at the April 26th GBM, but note this is not required (but encouraged) to run for a position. Voting will run from April 26th at 1 PM till April 30th at 11:59 PM. So, be on the lookout for a voting form during that time.

On that note, we mentioned on April 12th that we may be removing the HR position from the E-board. We have opted NOT to remove this position, but rather give it more structure. All that matters, this role is open for next year!

Prom: Enchanted Forest

The theme for MTC's prom is going to be Enchanted Forest this year! Prom will take place on April 26th from 7-10 PM in the ACC Black & Gold room. Please RSVP for this event here! We will provide catering with appetizers for this event! Get hyped (and maybe ask someone out if you're feeling crazy)!

Small Fall Director Applications

Applications to direct the Small Fall musical are open and can be found here! For small fall, a director must pitch the show they wish to direct along with their desire to direct. They will present this to the NEW E-board in May. Submissions will be due by May 3rd at noon!

Sendoff (Senior Showcase)

For those who are new, MTC holds a senior showcase each year near the end of the spring semester to honor those leaving UMBC with one final performance opportunity. This year we rebranded "Senior Showcase" to be called "Sendoff Showcase" to ensure it includes transfers and those leaving the university. This year's sendoff showcase will take place on April 29th from 6-7:30 in Lower Flat Tuesdays in the Commons. For those interested in performing (it will be set up like karaoke), sign up here!

With all of the recent reports of sexual assault/violence on campus as well as the release of the Title IX investigation, I wanted to be sure you all had access to various resources on campus for your safety. In times like this, it can be scary to navigate campus, but know that there are organizations to offer support.

UMBC has created a page about the recent investigation for Title IX violations. This page also includes a long list of resources on campus for students. You can access this page here! I will also go ahead and list some of the resources in this announcement.

First off, Reslife will have staff in the ACC lobby to support you from 12 - 2 PM today where you can just drop in for any students who are remaining on campus for spring break. 

Our faculty advisor, Dr. Suzanne Braunshweig, is also a resource to any students. You can email her at sbraun@umbc.edu with any questions or concerns. 

The Retriever Support Line is also a general hotline that will route individuals to appropriate support. You can call (410) 455-3167 or email at retrieversupport@umbc.edu for support. This will be available through Sunday, March 24th.

Other resources available include licensed clinical social workers, counseling services at Retriever Integrated Health (open 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM M-F, call at 410-455-2542), and the Women's Center (open 9:30 AM - 5 PM M-Th). Again, this page from the university provides a more extensive list of resources for students.

Finally, you can report any discrimination or sexual misconduct of any kind here, by emailing ecr@umbc.edu, or by calling (410) 455-1717. As stated by the university, "All reports will be investigated confidentially, impartially, and thoroughly, and we will take appropriate action according to our own university policies and the law. Discrimination or abuse of any kind will not be tolerated."

For those who are joining us at in-person dance auditions, that choreography is attached to this post! In-person dance auditions will be on Saturday, February 10th from 10 - 11:30 AM in Fine Arts 318. Be sure to sign up for a time slot at the end of the audition form! You will be auditioning in groups of 10, in two lines of 5. One group will start in the front and then you will switch, so everyone will audition twice.

Reminder: those doing dance auditions virtually have different choreography to learn. You can find tutorials on that at the end of the audition form! Your form must be submitted before 3 PM today!

ANYONE who is auditioning needs to fill out the audition form before 3 PM today! See you all there! Or just around campus whenever!

Auditions for the spring musical are this weekend! Continue reading to find out how to audition!

VIRTUAL AUDITIONS

If you plan to audition virtually, you are required to send in two videos, a 60-second video of you singing your audition song and a video of yourself dancing with the provided choreography located in the Google form linked below. This choreography is completely different from the choreography learned for in-person auditions. Linked in the form, there is a Google classroom you would need to join to have access to a harmony line provided by our vocal director Sophie. We ask that you learn your vocal part, listen to the audio associated with the part (soprano, alto, tenor, etc), and record yourself singing to send in with your audition. Virtual auditions must be sent in by Friday, February 9th at 3pm.


IN-PERSON AUDITIONS


In-person auditions will take place on two days, February 9th and February 10th. 


At the GBM on the 9th, Morgan, the choreographer for Legally Blonde, will be teaching the in-person audition choreography. For those who cannot make it to the GBM that day, there will be a video posted on our myUMBC page for those to learn. February 9th GBM will be in the RAC room 130 from 12pm to 12:50pm.

Starting at 3pm on the 9th, vocal auditions will begin in room FA 318. Prepare a 30-60 song that you will sing for our creative team. You are also required to learn your vocal part (soprano, alto, tenor, etc) and have it ready for your in person vocal audition. You will then be brought in with your audition group and will be asked to sing the line that was provided in the Google classroom in the audition form. Vocal auditions will be held from 3pm to 6pm. Sign up for a slot using the Signup Genius link in the audition form.

On February 10th from 10am to 11:30am, we will be holding dance auditions. This will give applicants time to practice the choreography learned the day prior at the GBM or through the video posted on our myUMBC page.The video that is provided in the application form is NOT the choreography that you will perform for the creative team. Sing up for a slot using the signup genius link in the audition form.

There will be callbacks on February 10th starting at 3pm and will go until 8pm. If you cannot make it in person, you can always submit a video of your callback! Just make sure to contact us and let us know you will be sending in your callback by 3pm on Saturday.

MTC's first event of the semester is taking place on February 12th from 7-9pm! Find us in Flat Tuesdays to sing some of your favorite musical theatre songs and talk to your friends! You must sign up before hand to save your spot to sing!

MTC MUSICAL MARCH MADNESS:

Love a friendly competition? This March, MTC will be having our own version of March Madness! In the form below, we are asking that you leave a list of your favorite musicals! All throughout the month of March, these musicals will be going head to head to see who will come out on top!

Hope you're well!

My name is Julia Arbutus, and I'm directing A Man of No Importance at the Greenbelt Arts Center this spring.

I am reaching out because we are in search of certain production team members and wanted to see if any of the students involved with MTC would be interested in working on this project with us. I'm a UMBC alum myself (class of 2020 and former treasurer of MTC), and so far, most of our production team is made up of UMBC alums! So you'll be working with a group of great people :)

We are looking for: Stage Manager, Asst. Stage Manager, Set Designer, Lighting Designer and Orchestra (Bass, Cello, Guitar, Synthesizer, Piano, Reed and Violin).

Generally, we will be running rehearsals Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. No one but a stage manager would be required to be at all or most rehearsals. Although it would be ideal for a stage manager to be available for all rehearsals, we can be a little flexible with absences, so we encourage anyone interested to reach out with their availability. Additionally, auditions take place Feb. 5-7 in the evenings and we would love it if our future stage manager could attend all three nights—although again, this is not mandatory.

All positions for this production are unfortunately unpaid; however, we are certain this show will be a fun and fulfilling production for anyone who loves community theater. We wanted to do this production because we are passionate about bringing this underperformed, queer show to new audiences, so if you are interested in rare theatre, queer stories or a good time, this would be a perfect opportunity to hone your skills with a group of cool people!

Show dates will be April 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 and May 3 and 4 at 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on April 21 and 28.

Some info about the show: A Man of No Importance is about Alfie Byrne, a bus conductor in 1964 Dublin whose heart holds secrets that he can’t share with anyone but his imagined confidante, Oscar Wilde. When he attempts to put on an amateur production of Wilde’s Salome in the local church hall, he confronts the forces of bigotry and shame over a love “that dare not speak its name.” But the redemptive power of theatre changes his life and brings his friends back to his side.

SECRETARY UPDATE

Due to unforeseen circumstances, our current secretary, M Kidwell, will be taking a gap semester. Despite this, they are still able to fulfill their duties as a board member. As a board, we want to gauge the opinions of the club on what to do moving forward. 

This is the exact statement in the bylaws regarding this situation: 

"If a board member will be absent in their spring semester (graduation, study abroad, leaving the university, etc), an election should be held about halfway through the semester to allow time for the newly elected to shadow the previous board member" 

M is not leaving the university and is still an undergraduate student. Since this bylaw is unclear about what to do in this situation, we want to gather opinions from our club members. The form is linked below.

Please note that this bylaw will be undergoing changes in the future.
